Today is Friday, July 8, the 190th day of 2016. There are 176 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On July 8, 1947, a New Mexico newspaper, the Roswell Daily Record, quoted officials at Roswell Army Air Field as saying they had recovered a "flying saucer" that had crashed onto a ranch; officials then changed the object's description, saying it was actually a weather balloon. To this day, however, there are those who believe what fell to Earth was an alien spaceship that carried extra-terrestrial beings.

On this date:

In 1663, King Charles II of England granted a Royal Charter to Rhode Island.

In 1776, Col. John Nixon gave the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence, outside the State House (now Independence Hall) in Philadelphia.

In 1889, The Wall Street Journal was first published.

In 1891, Warren G. Harding married Florence Kling DeWolfe in Marion, Ohio.

In 1907, Florenz Ziegfeld staged his first "Follies," on the roof of the New York Theater.

In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson received a tumultuous welcome in New York City after his return from the Versailles (vehr-SY') Peace Conference in France.

In 1950, President Harry S. Truman named Gen. Douglas MacArthur commander-in-chief of United Nations forces in Korea. (Truman ended up sacking MacArthur for insubordination nine months later.)

In 1965, Canadian Pacific Air Lines Flight 21, a Douglas DC-6B, crashed in British Columbia after the tail separated from the fuselage; all 52 people on board were killed in what authorities said was the result of an apparent bombing.

In 1975, President Gerald R. Ford announced he would seek a second term of office.

In 1986, Kurt Waldheim was inaugurated as president of Austria despite controversy over his alleged ties to Nazi war crimes. Admiral Hyman G. Rickover, widely regarded as father of the nuclear navy, died in Arlington, Virginia.

In 1994, Kim Il Sung, North Korea's communist leader since 1948, died at age 82.

In 2000, Venus Williams beat Lindsay Davenport 6-3, 7-6 (3) for her first Grand Slam title, becoming the first black female champion at Wimbledon since Althea Gibson in 1957-58.

Ten years ago: Four more U.S. soldiers were charged with rape and murder and a fifth with dereliction of duty in the rape-slaying of a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and the killings of her family in Mahmoudiya (mahk-moo-DEE'-ah). (The soldiers received sentences ranging from five to 110 years based on their acknowledged roles in the attack.) Discovery astronauts Piers Sellers and Michael Fossum went on a 7-1/2-hour spacewalk to test a repair technique for space shuttles. Amelie Mauresmo beat Justine Henin (EH'-nen)-Hardenne, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 at Wimbledon to win her second Grand Slam championship. Actress June Allyson died in Ojai (OH'-hy), California, at age 88.

Five years ago: Former first lady Betty Ford died in Rancho Mirage, California, at age 93. Atlantis thundered into orbit on a cargo run that would close out the three-decade U.S. space shuttle program. Ohio State vacated its wins from the 2010 football season, including its share of the Big Ten championship and a victory over Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl, as it responded to the NCAA's investigation of a memorabilia-for-cash scandal.

One year ago: On a rough day for tech, a "router issue" at United Airlines suspended all of the company's flights for nearly two hours, leading to 800 flight delays and 60 cancellations; a "technical problem" at the New York Stock Exchange halted trading; and the Wall Street Journal's website, WSJ.com, had "technical difficulties." (Government officials said it did not appear that the incidents were related, or the result of sabotage.) Medicare said it planned to pay doctors to counsel patients about end-of-life care, the same idea that sparked accusations of "death panels" and fanned a political furor around President Barack Obama's health care law.

LOL, I do like those barber-pole designs though.  I have a few of the old Padilla Barber-Poles.

I have to give Holts the great service award this week.  I bought cigars at Holts over the Holiday weekend and Famous shipped my bid buys last Wednesday.  I received both yesterday and Holts was with FS.

I've had a few barber poles over the years.  Can't say I was ever able to discern the flavor changes, mostly a novelty.  My favorite was the Padilla that had an intricate plaid design that used to go on special at CI.

And I still have some of those, called Habano Artisan Perfecto and sometimes called Burberry's.

I have never noticed any difference in the smoking either but they look good.

BLACK LIVES PROTEST TURNS MASSACRE

2 or more snipers killed 5 and injured 6 Dallas Cops in Downtown Dallas last night and this morning.

Edit:  3 in custody and 1 is still shooting.
4th shooter has shot himself and believed to be dead
Still questionable as to how many shooters but the Dallas Police Chief says the dead one did not shoot himself but the cops killed him with a bomb, now that is a new trick.

Well most folks know that all these cop shops have been heavily militarized over the last 10 years, this is the first time I know of they actually admitted to using it.

Still questionable as to how many shooters but the Dallas Police Chief says the dead one did not shoot himself but the cops killed him with a bomb, now that is a new trick.
yeah, they didn't tell you, they could use those bomb robots, to deliver a bomb.
good morning boys.

Yeah, that's plenty of pressure. My folks use an old electric one. It probably has <1000psi... so they spend the day moving a 2" fan back and forth. I offered mine plenty of times. They are more afraid of operating the gas powered. Keeps them occupied, I guess.  ::)

Happy Friday, Fellas... and Happy B-Day to Beanie
Happy Friday, Steve.
Pressure washing the patio today?
Been working on it for a week. It's slow going.
Ouch! Either a big patio or a low PSI washer. Did you spray a cleaner first?
Small backyard, and pretty powerful washer (2800 PSI?). The issue is the incompetent user. Did not use a cleaner first.
Assuming you own said pressure washer, a word of advice when you are finished.  Dose it with fuel stabilizer before storing it.
Good tip. I use the ethanol free gas as well. A premium price, but worth it, imo.
It's like $28/gallon as opposed to $2. I'll just buy new equipment when it dies and it'll be cheaper.
OMFG! I said "premium" not f'kn jet/rocket fuel. @$2.75 gal here. Some RaceTrac's have it.

http://pure-gas.org/

Jersey does seem to be a little desolate for options.... according to this map. Sheesh.
As we don't pump, we really don't know WTF they are putting in our tanks.
We all have to trust the label on the button regardless of who's handling the nozzle.  I wonder how much testing/inspection/validation really goes on with gasoline.

True, but I know they just approved for even more ethanol % to be added... f'kn corn syrup can't run sh!t

Have you plugged the pressure washer in,
and hooked it up to a hose with the water turned on?  8)

Las Calaveras 2016 now available at most sites.  Interestingly, SmokeInn, Famous, and Emersons are all cheaper than Atlantic.
Well how about that....got them to lower the price to match the others  (for VIP anyway).  Commoners are still better off buying from Famous or others, especially if a discount code works.
A 4Sampler paired with a NR 5er from the mash + catsrule comes out to $48.95 w/free shipping...
I'm sorry, a what paired with an NR fiver?

Morning, muchachos. Drove in to work today, so late checking in.
Howdy, Bret. No van pool today. You're off to a good start for leaving anyway.  ;)
Well, don't get to leave early. But do get to stop at the Harley shop on the way home.
Why?  Parts falling off?
hehehe....Spoken like a true rice burner rider.
Parts don't fall off rice-burners, to be sure. The wife or girlfriend does.
Sounds like a win-win.

Or just the carnal kind, as the case may be.  We don't judge here.

Afternoon all. I was unaware of the deadly night in Dallas until this morning.
While watching Nats/mets, i Was enjoying a Padron 1926 gifted by a friend who is a director of security for the NFL.
A member of my K of C cigar club, I don't see him very often since he spends most of the week in NYC, his family comes next ... great guy.  New World by AJ was just as enjoyable at half the price.

Finally some decent news...

Seven U.S. Senators Question The

FDA On Final Rule

"We strongly believe that large, premium

cigars do not fall into this category"

On June 7, 2016, seven United States Senators - Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL), Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), Senator Jon Tester (D-MT), Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV), and Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) - sent a letter to FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf to express their concerns with the final rule that subjected premium cigars to regulation.

In the body of the letter, the seven Senators not only expressed their dismay with FDA's decision, but they also posed, and are seeking answers, to questions as to how the FDA will manage and implement the provisions being subjected on the premium cigar industry.  Their questions, can help build the case that the FDA is unprepared and ill advised to pursue regulations on premium and large cigars.

These senators and fourteen of their colleagues are co-sponsors of S. 441 which calls for an exemption from regulation for premium and large cigars.

To date, the letter has yet to be answered.
