Today is Wednesday, July 6, the 188th day of 2016. There are 178 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On July 6, 1944, an estimated 168 people died in a fire that broke out during a performance in the main tent of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in Hartford, Connecticut. (One of the survivors of the blaze was future actor Charles Nelson Reilly, then age 13.)

On this date:

In 1535, Sir Thomas More was executed in England for high treason.

In 1777, during the American Revolution, British forces captured Fort Ticonderoga.

In 1865, the weekly publication The Nation, the self-described "flagship of the left," made its debut.

In 1917, during World War I, Arab forces led by T.E. Lawrence and Auda Abu Tayi captured the port of Aqaba (AH'-kah-buh) from the Turks.

In 1933, the first All-Star baseball game was played at Chicago's Comiskey Park; the American League defeated the National League, 4-2.

In 1945, President Harry S. Truman signed an executive order establishing the Medal of Freedom. Nicaragua became the first nation to ratify the United Nations Charter.

In 1957, Althea Gibson became the first black tennis player to win a Wimbledon singles title as she defeated fellow American Darlene Hard 6-3, 6-2.

In 1964, the movie "A Hard Day's Night," starring The Beatles, had its world premiere in London. British colony Nyasaland became the independent country of Malawi.

In 1966, Malawi became a republic.

In 1971, jazz trumpeter and singer Louis Armstrong died in New York at age 69.

In 1988, 167 North Sea oil workers were killed when explosions and fires destroyed a drilling platform. Medical waste and other debris began washing up on New York City-area seashores, forcing the closing of several popular beaches.

In 1996, a Delta MD-88 jetliner's left engine blew apart during an attempted takeoff from Pensacola, Florida, sending metal pieces ripping into the cabin, killing a mother and her son.

Ten years ago: The space shuttle Discovery docked with the international space station, bringing with it European Space Agency astronaut Thomas Reiter, who began a 6-month stay aboard the station. Election officials declared Felipe Calderon (fay-LEE'-pay kahl-duh-ROHN') winner of the official count in Mexico's disputed presidential race over Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (ahn-DRAYS' mahn-WEHL' LOH'-pez OH'-brah-dohr), who blamed fraud for his narrow loss. Magazine publisher Ralph Ginzburg, who was at the center of two First Amendment battles in the 1960s and served eight months in federal prison for obscenity, died in New York at age 76.

Five years ago: President Barack Obama held his first Twitter town hall, which focused on jobs and the economy. Jury selection began in the perjury trial of former baseball pitcher Roger Clemens, who was accused of lying under oath to Congress when he denied ever using performance-enhancing drugs during his career (the proceedings ended abruptly in a mistrial; Clemens was later acquitted in a retrial). The 2018 Winter Olympics were awarded to the South Korean city of Pyeongchang, sending the winter games to Asia for the first time since 1998.

One year ago: The Associated Press obtained documents in which Bill Cosby admitted in 2005 that he'd secured quaaludes with the intent of giving them to young women he wanted to have sex with and that he gave the sedative to at least one woman and other people; Cosby's lawyers insisted that two of the accusers knew they were taking quaaludes from the comedian, according to the unsealed documents. Pope Francis received a hero's welcome in Guayaquil, Ecuador's biggest city, as he celebrated the first public Mass of his South American tour. Hollywood producer Jerry Weintraub, 77, died in Santa Barbara, California.

The multi-millionaire founder of Macaroni Grill and Fuddruckers is being sued for inappropriately grabbing an employee, according to media reports.

Phil Romano, who also owns Eatzi's Market & Bakery based in the Dallas-Forth Worth Metroplex, was sued by Ichel Cook, an assistant manager at one of the bakery's locations on April 7 after he allegedly walked behind her and "inappropriately grabbed (Cook's) buttocks with a grin on his face," according to WFAA. Cook is seeking at least $1 million.

The lawsuit states the entire incident was caught on video. Cook told WFAA, "Phil walks into the market, turns his hand like this, grabs me, laughs, takes a few more steps, stops, turns around and stares at me for at least five seconds," as she watched the video.

You can stare but no more than 3 seconds.

OK, 1.5 seconds. It gets really creepy after that.
Either way, a steep price for a stare.

Must have had a shootout at the shelter, about 10 cops with the roads blocked and 2 fire trucks but the ambulance came and they had them move back away and wait at the corner.

Cook told WFAA, "Phil walks into the market, turns his hand like this, grabs me, laughs, takes a few more steps, stops, turns around and stares at me for at least five seconds," as she watched the video.

only a small % of those I-35 drivers are stopping downtown most are going right on thru or getting off at the University.

Warden's office is at 2222 & 360 and roughly 20% of the employees (all 30 somethings that make good money) live downtown and commute out.  Surveys show that less than 50% of the people that live downtown work downtown.

Not just male coaches getting the boot:

CHICAGO -- Loyola University has fired women's basketball coach Sheryl Swoopes.

The school said in April that it would investigate allegations against Swoopes brought by former players. One former player, Cate Soan, has said Swoopes humiliated her and created a hostile environment.

Swoopes issued another statement Tuesday that read:

"Last week I was looking forward to what lied next, right after the holiday. We'd been planning to greet eight of the 12 committed student-athletes to campus today. I've heard people speak of Transformation Tuesday and now I experience it. I'm disappointed that I won't have the opportunity to be there on this Tuesday as 'Coach Swoopes'.

"It's my hope that the student-athletes will be provided a full explanation of what has unfolded. As students, they deserve truth and transparency. All I can say at this point is that I do feel vindicated. I was one hundred percent pleased with what I thought clearly supported all I've ever tried to provide as a coach, an employee and the woman of character my mother has raised."

:o  (maybe she should have had her spokesman handle that as well)

Best O' the Bueso's.....there you have it!
It's up there with the Hababo as the best for me. But I'm a fan of the entire line, as you may have heard.
In fact, they have the Odysseys up on the FU right now, box for $40. Already have an unopened box in the humi, considering another one.
Get them before the FDA gets them!
Okay, what's the FU? I mean, as it pertains to cigars?

Quizno's is bankrupt and about all gone around here.  Jimmy John's is really fast but rather meh taste-wise.  Best bet up here is Hoody's Subs.  Local guy making great subs for almost 30 yrs.  Philly cheesestake rivals anything you can find out east.

There is also a pretty good local hippie sub shop (at least I think it is local but definitely hippie) on Congress (right across from Subway) called Planet Subs.  But - they are almost double the price of subway and they only have white bread, nothing whole grain.  That said though they bake the bread there and it is pretty good.

Brought in some pork roll and cheese for lunch, left over from grilling on Monday.  Yum.
I am thinking maybe a Subway sandwich but that is subject to change.
Sweet onion, chicken, teriyaki.
NO!

Turkey with pepper jack cheese, spinach, peppers and a little brown mustard on Honey Oat Bread
Quite frankly my dear Subway sandwiches are not worth a  chit.
That's what I was thinking. If you have to eat chain-store sandwiches, go with Quizno's or Jimmy John's.
Mostly because those two are even worse.
Worse than Subway? Not in my experience.

No bargain pricing, but Crowned Heads Las Calaveras EL 2016  Boxes and Cigar Sampler 4-CT now available at Atlantic.

4/$40 is about what I expected for that.
About what I would expect but not what I would expect to pay.

Well, they will sell out even at this price. They usually command $10 a stick. Not many coupon opportunities. I'll probably get a sampler at some point. Let me know if you see a "deal".  ;)

Damn, I would like to......... that 50 year old myself.

NEW YORK --

Former Fox News Channel anchor Gretchen Carlson is suing network chief executive Roger Ailes, claiming she was fired after refusing his sexual advances.

Fox News representatives did not immediately return requests for comment on the lawsuit, which was filed Wednesday in Superior Court in New Jersey's Bergen County.

Carlson, the former host of a daytime show at Fox, alleged a pattern of discriminatory behavior at Fox.

She says she was fired in June. She says that happened nine months after Ailes told her that "you and I should have had a sexual relationship a long time ago."

The 50-year-old Carlson was Miss America in 1989. She spent 11 years at Fox

Yes, my mistake it was the La Imperiosa's I was thinking of but I have some Las Calaveras also and they were not samplers.  Better than the La Imperiosa's though but they have improved some over time.  Tried one a week or 2 ago.  My Las Calaveras might be 2014's I will have to check when I get home, might smoke one if not tooo hot again today.  By the time you add the shipping at Atlantic you are around $11.50 each for 4 or $10.80 if you try 8..

They will come around (unless the FDA Rape comes into play) last year we got the 4-pak samplers in the mid $20 range.

You talking La Imperiosa? I don't recall these in a sampler before.

...and imfo, the La Imperiosa did not come near the original release of the Las Calaveras. I've got 3/4 of a box waiting for hopeful improvement. So far, nothing noticeable... Marginal at best.
Buy a box and it's free shipping!   ;D

LALTS... Company man, right there.

No bargain pricing, but Crowned Heads Las Calaveras EL 2016  Boxes and Cigar Sampler 4-CT now available at Atlantic.

4/$40 is about what I expected for that.

Agree, not all that great of a sandwich. And then there's the whole Jared thing.  Ewwww....

Wonder how many times he gets asked if he'd like the six inch or the foot long.  :o
I doubt he rarely gets asked. ;)
Maybe he only gets both shown to him to tease?
Either way, I hope he's getting it multiple times per day.

@ Raz - get-um while congress is on vacation!

Not a bad deal these days, at Target Sports USA

Federal 5.56mm XM855 NATO 62 Grain FMJ 420 rds on Stripper Clips in Ammo Can

Special $210.00
FREE SHIPPING INCLUDED
My rifle has a slow twist (1:9), so the higher price for the heavier bullet doesn't buy me anything.  I stock up when I get the 55gr at around $0.40@.  My next such rifle will have a faster twist and a longer barrel.
Just re-barrel it.
But then I don't have an excuse to buy another gun.
But you don't have the money for a new AR anyway so just what difference does it make at this time?

I thought "hunting rifle" was next on the list... not that you couldn't hunt with another AR. Does he already have a .308?  ;)
Oh, and I'm not terribly interested in a .308.
You were not interested in a full size .40 either so you bought two.

Same reason they still sell so many 1911's in 45acp.  Tradition, heritage, aesthetics, and personal preference. A 308 will get the job done, just not something I'm personally exercised about. Personal preference.

And BTW, I can afford whatever I decide is important to me. The 308 just isn't that important to me right now. But that could change tomorrow, just like it did last week for a couple of FNS-40's.

Federal 5.56mm XM855 NATO 62 Grain FMJ 420 rds on Stripper Clips in Ammo Can

Special $210.00

I didn't say I wasn't interested in it, only that I didn't NEED it.

I don't need a .308, but I'm also not particularly interested in that cartridge.
A .308 is a fundamental member of every Murican arsenal.
And here I thought it was muskets....

Used to be. It's outdated technology now.
Wonder why they still sell so many of them in modern rifles ???
Same reason they still sell so many 1911's in 45acp.  Tradition, heritage, aesthetics, and personal preference. A 308 will get the job done, just not something I'm personally exercised about. Personal preference.

And BTW, I can afford whatever I decide is important to me. The 308 just isn't that important to me right now. But that could change tomorrow, just like it did last week for a couple of FNS-40's.
I was waiting on that and sure enough you got it backwards ;).  The correct answer would be "for the same reason they sell so many Modern Guns in .45 ACP".
For the life of me, I don't quite understand why they have so many different sizes anyway. Two maybe three sizes for pistols, the same for rifles, two for shotguns and be done with it.  Easier to get ammo, less hassles.

Some mighty modern upgrades to .45 acp ammo, hell I have gone back to carrying .45's almost all the time now - but not 1911's.

Marketing department that's why.

Someone always wants to build a better mouse trap, and there is always someone who will want to sell it.

Since Bret kinda brought up Cooper, the short(er) answer is "why not?"
The reason why not is cross compatibility.  PITA if you pick up one gun and get the ammo or cartridge for another.
The more options there are, the greater for mixups.

Like the time my son and I were going out skeet shooting and only realized out on the range that he brought 20g shells for his 12g gun.

I didn't say I wasn't interested in it, only that I didn't NEED it.

I don't need a .308, but I'm also not particularly interested in that cartridge.
A .308 is a fundamental member of every Murican arsenal.

I was covering the fact that both the 1911 and the 45acp are dated.
Some mighty modern upgrades to .45 acp ammo, hell I have gone back to carrying .45's almost all the time now - but not 1911's.
Of course.  But if bullet technology can keep the bullet together and get it to stop inside the target, then there are advantages to driving a smaller bullet faster - most important of which, you can carry more ammo for weight and the bullets are cheaper.  But then there's the eternal debate of how much ammo does one need for self defense?  And it'll never be answered.

Fact of the matter is, bullet for bullet it doesn't matter anymore - at least when discussing the use of handguns against two-legged critters.

I embraced 40's for no reason other than I've got multiple friends who will handload for me.

Keep your powder dry, and your stick on the ice.

Please don't pull a Raz and PWYAO.

Who, me?  Nah, I'm not riled.  I got you riled. ;-)

Nah, I just went and grabbed a nap.  Now to catch up on the ammo banter.
Good luck, Travellin Dave wants to limit us to 3 selections.......

I didn't say I wasn't interested in it, only that I didn't NEED it.

I don't need a .308, but I'm also not particularly interested in that cartridge.
A .308 is a fundamental member of every Murican arsenal.

Stop the common sense approach to hobbies!   Sheesh, what if they only made 3 kinds of cigars, after all they all just make smoke.
And God forbid you only grab two Coronas for a long drive when you meant to grab Churchills.
But it would bother you if you had to have a dedicated cutter and lighter for the Churchills and only have Corona's to smoke...

No, it's just second nature for her.
Which makes her qualified to run the country.

It's a coin-toss for me. I vote guns, limited government, and due process. Neither one of them has a good track record on any of the above, and the ink wasn't dry on the NRA endorsement of Trump when he started equivocating.

Trump is a risk and that evil bitch is a 100% guaranteed disaster for this entire country.  Choice is easy.

Drinking sounds like a great idea. Unfortunately I'll fall asleep before I even catch a buzz. Especially since I only just finished dinner.
