They've lost 11 of the last 15. Not sure why they keep coming up as favorites, but I used it to my advantage in betting on Europe to win. :D

Oldest has her driving test today. It's her only chance to pass without having to take driver's ed, which was a new law put through in Ohio that goes into effect next month. I'm not terribly confident in her chances, having helped her with the maneuverability portion, but fingers crossed.

Today is Monday, Sept. 29th, the 272nd day of 2025
with 93 to follow.

The moon is waxing. Morning stars are Jupiter, Mercury, Neptune, Saturn, Uranus and Venus. Evening stars are Mars, Mercury, Neptune and Saturn.

On this date in history:

In 1789, the U.S. War Department organized the country's first standing army -- 700 soldiers who would serve for three years.

In 1923, Britain began to govern Palestine and what was then known as Transjordan under a League of Nations mandate. The mandate was in place in Palestine until 1948 and in Transjordan until 1946.

In 1936, in the U.S. presidential race between Franklin D. Roosevelt and Alf Landon, the Democratic and Republican parties used radio for the first time. FDR won re-election in a record vote in November.

In 1941, the Babi Yar massacre of nearly 34,000 Jewish men, women and children began on the outskirts of Kiev in Nazi-occupied Ukraine.

In 1965, Communist North Vietnam announced that U.S. pilots taken prisoner would be tried as war criminals.

In 1988, Stacy Marie Allison, a construction worker from Portland, Ore., became the first American woman and the world's seventh to scale Mount Everest.

In 1992, Earvin "Magic" Johnson announced he was returning to the Los Angeles Lakers less than a year after he retired because he had AIDS. A month later, Johnson announced his retirement for a second time.

In 2005, John Roberts Jr. easily won confirmation by the U.S. Senate and was sworn in as chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. He succeeded the late William Rehnquist.

In 2017, the U.S. State Department pulled all non-emergency staff from its embassy in Havana, Cuba, in connection to mysterious health issues experienced by workers there. Dubbed "Havana syndrome," the mysterious symptoms were reported in multiple countries and there has yet to be an official cause.

In 2024, heavy flooding and landslides killed nearly 150 people in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Between you and Raz, you might want to try a cooking banter next.
Yea, they could have a theme for each day...Italian Monday, Casserole Tuesday, Meaty Wednesday, Thirsty Thursday (so Tony can get he whiskey on), Seafood Friday, Miscellaneous Saturday and Pot Luck Sunday.

We can report on daily deals by Omaha Steaks, King Arthur, Williams-Sonoma....
I hate casseroles, other than lasagne.

I made Chicken Yassa on Saturday night.  It wasn't the wife's favorite, but #1 son demanded the recipe. Was excellently accompanied by steamed Kale and a Gewόrztraminer from the Spokane Valley.  I don't usually like Gewόrztraminers, but matched to this dish, it excelled.

My grandpa had his rescheduled procedure this morning. Sounds like everything went according to plan. Big tumor cut out of his left arm, but they think they got everything they needed to get.

I made some ricotta from scratch over the weekend. Been meaning to try it for a while. I used a little less than a gallon of milk and it yielded about 2 lbs. of ricotta. I think this will be a main component of tonight's dinner, but I haven't figured out yet what that'll be.
The missus has done this, but I haven't.  But it has been a long time since I made stuffed shells.  May have to get on that.
I love stuffed shells. That's not a bad idea.

Oldest has her driving test today. It's her only chance to pass without having to take driver's ed, which was a new law put through in Ohio that goes into effect next month. I'm not terribly confident in her chances, having helped her with the maneuverability portion, but fingers crossed.
Good luck to her.
She's there now with the appt being at 1, but they're being told they could be waiting up to two hours since there's so many people waiting to get in before the new law kicks in. Like, that means you have to wildly overbook appts just for that? Fucking government agencies.

"Yassa" refers to the method of cooking, meaning that the meat is first marinated, then stewed or braised.  Like all peasant food, it is a means of extending a limited amount of meat and making it tasty, especially if the meat is of middling quality, so that it can feed more people with bigger appetites. The term originates in Senegal, but every culture has a dish like this.

In Senegal, the plentiful extenders are onions, garlic, and chiles.  So you marinate and brown the meat you have (chicken, fish, or lamb), then gently carmelize an equal weight of onions.  Then you put your meat and the marinade back in the pot with cloves of garlic and a habanero pepper, and cook at low-medium temperature until the sauce thickens and the meat is falling of the bone.  Spread the meat over rice, pour the sauce over the meat and voila.  Serve with some greens.  The Senegalese would use blanched hibiscus.  But we have an abundance of kale in the garden, so we just steamed that.

JV football game this afternoon. I will try to sneak out of work a little early.
A Monday afternoon game? Haven't heard of that one before.
They squeeze JV games in anywhere they can.
We lost 14-42. My son scored with a quarterback sneak.

I made some ricotta from scratch over the weekend. Been meaning to try it for a while. I used a little less than a gallon of milk and it yielded about 2 lbs. of ricotta. I think this will be a main component of tonight's dinner, but I haven't figured out yet what that'll be.
Just made a simple pasta with marinara sauce after the game. Added a dollop of ricotta on top and it was delicious. I'll definitely do that again.

Well, that's something. Sounds like he's building a lot of character this year.

I couldn't find shells at the supermarket near my son's school. So I implemented Plan B.
