I took this picture of Seattle's iconic Smith Tower from the balcony of my sons' condo on Friday night.

When it was completed in 1914, it was the tallest building west of the Mississippi, and remained so until the Kansas Power & Light building was completed in 1931.  Even so, Smith Tower remained the tallest structure on the west coast until the erection in 1962 of that other Seattle icon, the Space Needle.

Its namesake, Lyman Cornelius Smith, made his first fortune manufacturing hammerless shotguns, though he is not related to the Smiths of Smith & Wesson firearms fame.  He is, however, the Smith in the Smith-Corona Typewriter Company, which still exists today as a manufacturer of thermal printing and labelling products.

What looks like a gray wall across the bottom of my picture is actually the top of the Seattle Fire Dept Emergency Communications Center across the street from my sons' building.

Today is Monday, May 12, the 132nd day of 2025
with 233 to follow.

The moon is full. Morning stars are Mars, Mercury, Neptune, Saturn and Venus. Evening stars are Jupiter and Mars.

On this date in history:

In 1909, two giraffes, one leopard and one buffalo killed, and two leopard cubs captured were the latest additions to the former President Teddy Roosevelt's hunting trophies, according to reports out of Nairobi.

In 1926, the British general strike, which had held the nation in its grip for more than 8 1/2 days, was called off.

In 1937, George VI was crowned king of England, succeeding his brother Edward, who abdicated to marry U.S. divorcee Wallis Simpson.

In 1949, Soviet authorities announced the end of a land blockade of Berlin. The blockade lasted 328 days but was neutralized by the Allies' Berlin airlift.

In 1975, a Cambodian gunboat fired on the U.S. cargo ship Mayaguez and forced it into a Cambodian port, setting off an international incident. Although authorities were to release the ship's crew members unharmed, a mission to rescue them led to the downing of three U.S. helicopters, and many deaths among U.S. troops and others.

In 2000, Adam Petty, the fourth-generation driver of NASCAR's first family of racing, died after crashing into a wall during a practice session at New Hampshire International Speedway. He was 19.

In 2002, former President Jimmy Carter began a visit to Cuba. He was the first president, in or out of office, to visit the island since communists took over in 1959.

In 2008, a magnitude-8 earthquake, China's deadliest in three decades, killed more than 69,000 people, with nearly 18,000 missing and hundreds of thousands homeless. It is often called the Great Sichuan Earthquake.

In 2010, a man armed with a meat cleaver entered a central China kindergarten classroom and slaughtered seven children, a teacher and her mother before taking his own life. Seventeen people died and about 100 were injured in five attacks in Chinese schools in a two-month period.

In 2013, 19 people were injured in what police said were gang-related shootings at a Mother's Day parade in New Orleans.

In 2016, Vice President Michel Temer became Brazil's interim president after the Senate voted to proceed with an impeachment trial for Dilma Rousseff.

In 2019, attackers killed six people attending a mass at a Catholic church in Dablo, Burkina Faso.

The condo belongs to my sister.  She bought it in 2006 or 2007, IIRC.  After she left Amazon and moved to California in 2014, she rented it to a series of Amazon developers.  My #2 son graduated college in 2024 and he and #1 son were looking for a place to room together when the latest batch of Amazon devs ended their lease.  So my sons leased it from her, and are exploring life in the big city.

What looks like a gray wall across the bottom of my picture is actually the top of the Seattle Fire Dept Emergency Communications Center across the street from my sons' building.
Very nice, Bret. Is this condo a recent acquisition?
The condo belongs to my sister.  She bought it in 2006 or 2007, IIRC.  After she left Amazon and moved to California in 2014, she rented it to a series of Amazon developers.  My #2 son graduated college in 2024 and he and #1 son were looking for a place to room together when the latest batch of Amazon devs ended their lease.  So my sons leased it from her, and are exploring life in the big city.
Very cool.
Something we were commenting on in Baltimore...cities coming back with lots of young people.  Helps to drive the restaurant and bar scene followed by  trendy retail.  Very good to see.

Well, SURE it drives the restaurant and bar scene.  Because every time I take the missus to visit her ducks, I'm on the hook for dinner.  And every time I go to see one of their gigs, I'm buying a round for the band.

Friday night it was Il Bistro.  Il Bistro is located at the Pike Place Market, and as Italian bistros go it's...above average.  Good service, good wine list, food's good but not necessarily exceptional, except for one thing - they do a killer lasagne.  They warn you up front that it takes extra time, about 20 minutes.  I'm not sure what they put in it, other than veal and pork and house-made Ricotta.  Maybe they sprinkle it with cocaine or ecstasy. I dunno.  But it kills.  And the 2018 Montepulciano didn't hurt it a bit.  But it was a $370 tab when all was said and done.
