Crappy photo, but you get the gist. Just had to call animal control about this intruder on my neighbor's driveway. He's not moving too swiftly but he also shouldn't be out and about at this hour.

Animal control? My wife saves the Mandarin oranges that we don't eat before they get hard and stale to throw at the racoons. I swear, the woman has an arm on her and a dead aim. Sometimes it takes the racoons days to work up the courage to venture into the backyard again.

I'm thinking injured because he was lumbering. I feel like rabid animals would almost seem hyperactive. But I'm not outdoorsy at all.
Hard to say if it's injured. They lumber anyway. Has there been rabies in your area?

I'm not aware. I'm guessing this creature was not well because when the dude from animal control showed up, he hissed a little, but didn't try to make a break for it. The guy had this long pole with a collar on it, snagged the raccoon and dropped him into a cage. He was here and gone by the time I posted the original note.
No oranges needed.

Yeah, well...y'all will remember I live at the far edge of the exurbs out here, less than 15 miles from the Mt Baker-Snoqualmie national forest. There's a ranger station on the way out of town to the east We're accustomed to encounters with the wildlife.

They work fast, no doubt about it. We had a skunk in our stairwell in the backyard once that was clearly suffering. Dude was in and out so fast that if you blinked, you missed it.

Morning, muchachos.
Good morning, Bret. Hope you enjoyed a restful weekend.
Mostly. We had to go to my brother's on Saturday to remove a sofa-bed, which was a chore. Damned things are heavy and clumsy. Much of the rest of the weekend was devoted to the continued financial planning that has become the annual custom leading up to filing the tax return. Spent an hour or two last night on a call with a friend from college who is a financial consultant, letting him pitch me on the virtues of indexed annuities for capital preservation. He made a powerful case, one I'm sure gets him a lot of traction with people who are less familiar than I am with equities markets (not that I'm an expert, by any means). But, being me, I had to point out that his slide depicting the markets going up and down by 50% makes for simple math but doesn't jibe with the actual behavior of the markets. I'm such a pain in the ass. He was good-humored about me keeping it real.
I conceded that I am a borderline case for such a pitch - farther ahead in retirement finance than most Americans if statistics are to be believed, but not so far ahead as not to be concerned about the money running out if I live too long, and also concerned to make things simple as possible for the missus if I don't. It's something to look at.

Pellet gun would work better than oranges don't you think? Besides, this years crop is going to be as expensive as eggs with no labor to pick them...

Ehhh...A pellet gun would offer higher velocity, and hence greater potential for accuracy, but the size of the projectile would magnify mechanical error. At the same time, it offers greater potential to wound, but low potential of lethality. That I carry a sidearm regularly, and own enough firearms to outfit a combat squad, doesn't make me the sadistic maniac the hysterical left suggests I am. I'll kill anything that threatens death to me or my family, and I'll hunt for the sake of wildlife management. But I'm not interested in inflicting pain on animals because they behave like animals.
And the oranges that become ammunition are unfit for consumption anyway. ;-)

Roberta Flack dead at 88.
That's a loss. Her voice was sexy as hell.
Trivia of the day: Flack's biggest hit was "Killing Me Softly With His Song," composed by Charles Fox, with lyrics by Norman Gimbel based on inspiration from Lori Lieberman after she attended a concert. Who was the artist whose songs were "softly killing" Lori Lieberman?
Englebert Humperdinck.
Don McLean.
Your favorite too!
Hm. I'm a fan of some of his work, but he's pretty far down the favorites list.
