I have a 4-day weekend myself because I took tomorrow off to go get my license. My younger two also get Tuesday off, so they have a 5-day weekend.

The good news is that they were wrong about the additional snowfall. No shoveling for me today.

That's a win. No snow here either for now, but more is on the way, along with some chilly temps. Will this fucking winter never relent?

That's one way they'd win it, but I don't think the Dodgers are gonna just throw in the towel. You might just have to see what the next 162 games bring you.

There seems to be a lot of optimism in town for the coming year. That almost certainly means trouble ahead.

You're probably right. Don't know that we'll see much of it here, though. Guardians games on TV are still in flux. I think they're trying to work something out with the MLB, but even if they do, it'll probably be a subscription-type service.

Post by: Travellin Dave on February 13, 2025, 09:47:35 AM
Today is Thursday, Feb. 13, the 44th day of 2025
with 321 to follow.

The moon is waning. Morning stars are Jupiter, Mars and Uranus. Evening stars are Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, Uranus and Venus.

On this date in history:

In 1668, Portugal was recognized as an independent nation by Spain.

In 1861, the first Medal of Honor was awarded. It went to Col. Bernard Irwin, an assistant surgeon serving in the first major U.S. Army-Apache conflict.

In 1923, the New York Renaissance, the first all-Black professional basketball team, was established. The Rens were a dominant team in the 1920s and 1930s before disbanding in 1949 upon the formation of the racially integrated National Basketball Association.

In 1935, Bruno Richard Hauptmann was convicted of America's most colossal crime, and a jury determined that he would forfeit his life in the electric chair for the murder of baby Charles A. Lindbergh, Jr.

In 1945, thousands of Allied planes started bombing the German city of Dresden in World War II. The attack caused a firestorm that destroyed the city over a three-day period. Reports of the death toll varied widely over the years, with many researchers eventually estimating it was in the 25,000 range.

In 1960, France tested its first atomic weapon, making it the fourth nuclear power.

In 1974, the Soviet Union expelled dissident writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn.

In 1983, a blaze engulfed a crowded movie theater in Turin, Italy, killing 74 people, many of them teenagers trampled to death in a panic-stricken race to the exits.

In 1984, Konstantin Chernenko succeeded the late Yuri Andropov as Soviet leader.

In 2001, more than 400 people were killed in an earthquake in El Salvador.

In 2006, a U.N. report accused the United States of violating prisoners' rights at its military base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

In 2017, national security adviser Michael Flynn resigned for misleading Vice President Mike Pence about discussions he had with Russia's ambassador. The retired general held the position for 24 days.

In 2021, a weather event unofficially known as Winter Storm Uri formed off the coast of the Pacific Northwest. The storm brought days of snow and frigid temperatures to much of the South, plunging Texas into a two-week power crisis and killing at least 246 people.

In 2023, a mass shooting at Michigan State University left three students dead and injured five others. The gunman, Anthony Dwayne McRae, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a confrontation with police.

Don't get me wrong, I love the stock market.  But I swear sometimes I think someone needs to get it high and tell it to chill the f**k out.  It's like a toddler that can't sit still.  Tariffs?  Inflation?  Down half a point.  Two days later, nothing's changed, we're back up a half-point.  Collectively, investors have the attention span of a horny gnat.

100%  Didn't know the name, but I had to look her up. I saw the Poseidon Adventure years ago, but don't remember her in it. What's wrong with me that I only remember Shelley Winters and Ernest Borgnine? Upon further review, seems like a pretty incredible cast. I'm thinking about watching it again.

The only thing screwier than the market are these business shows that act as if they know why the market behaves as it does.  Market is down a bunch on a given day and "they" say it's because of X.  Next day it bounces back and more and they say it's also because of X.  So which is it.
Besides, if they were any good at the market, they would be sitting home or on the beach or on their yacht sipping an adult beverage instead of yammering on on a TV show.

There's a market for information, because everybody wants to believe they can crack the code and win big. And sometimes people get lucky and score, and that makes them believe the information helped, when in fact they got lucky. But even Warren Buffett, arguably the greatest investor of all time, has made some really big blunders.

I've been guilty myself of attempting to mimic Buffett. But as he points out, it's not really possible for the retail investor. He buys entire companies. His best advice for the vast majority of investors is an S&P Index fund. "Nobody," he says, "beats the S&P 500 over 20 years."

Most of my advisors are skeptical of, even horrified by, the aggressiveness of my various portfolios at my age. But I keep pointing out that my state retirement plan is very conservative, and with my pension and Social Security I'll be able to retire on that alone, and if necessary I'll unload the house and downsize. So I'm being very aggressive with everything else, because I'm enough ahead that I can handle a 20%-30% correction without being in trouble. The COVID bear markets nearly wiped out my returns since 2017. I just shrugged and stayed with it, didn't adjust a thing, and it all came roaring back. That taught me a big lesson.
