Was planning to go in today, but I decided to work remotely instead. Especially since the tolls recently went up yet again. We're up to about $17 to cross the George Washington Bridge. I believe that's with the EZPass discount. And with added congestion tolls for anything under 60th Street (which includes the two tunnels from NJ), we're at about $26.

I saw something about that congestion pricing the other day. Sounds like they've decided pretty much any time is congestion time.

It feels unconstitutional. The Transit Authority is already famous for misappropriating tons of bus and subway toll money, and now they're adding this ~$15B to their till? I shouldn't have brought it up because it makes my blood boil.

Speaking of boiling, or not boiling, in this case, the flame sensor on my boiler seems to be having fits. I've cleaned it a couple of times, but sometimes it'll kick off the flame before going through the whole cycle. Might have to get someone out her to take a look at it. Argh.

After they recently installed mine, I had our gas company come do an inspection. They found that the burners weren't all pointing in the same direction, which could cause carbon build-up and misfiring. It is apparently pretty typical for these burners to move during shipping, and installers don't think to go under and look. I'll try to see if I can find photos to illustrate what I'm saying.

Hmm, interesting. They've been out before and cleaned the sensor since they installed it and it worked for a year and a half since then, so I think everything is pointing in the right direction. But I need to know how or what they clean it with, because I can't ever seem to replicate their results. Next time they come out, I'm gonna be watching the guy like a hawk to see what he does. Lol

And for sure it is.  Quite the racket, like the speed lanes here.  Instead of adding an extra lane or two to alleviate traffic, they built a toll lane with transition lanes into it.  Tolls change with congestion to multiple dollars per mile.  If they just added the extra lanes to general traffic, there would be no congestion issue.  Have these a lot in Cali. and MD/DC as well.

writer Zora Neale Hurston in 1891;
actor Butterfly McQueen in 1911;
Rolling Stone magazine publisher Jann Wenner in 1946 (age 79);

Well, turns out what I was cleaning was the ignitor, not the flame sensor. New to me in 2020, the parts look almost identical. So now I feel like an idiot. And a slightly poorer idiot. But at least I don't have to fret about it anymore.

I've always been a fan of his, and his "Keep the Fire" and "High Adventure" albums are among my all-time favorite albums. After that he, like Dan Fogelberg, fell into the aging Boomer songwriter rut. It's a distinct phenomenon - they start writing songs about issues they care about enough to go to expensive fundraiser hob-knobs in Los Angeles, but not to actually participate in.  I applaud them for the effort, but it produces really boring music.  Music for wine-tasting.

There's nothing wrong with that either.  I like to play at wine tasting events.  Got one planned now.  It just doesn't produce interesting music.  When you've written something with the unashamed elation of "Don't Fight It," or the goofball funk of "Mr. Night", well, "Hope for the Runaway" is a real disappointment.  And one children's album is a passion project.  Two is maximizing commercial potential.  Three means you have some secret wish to be Pee Wee Herman or Captain Kangaroo.

Lyrically, this might be the best Kenny Loggins ever wrote:

"I've always said that I believe anything can happen
But lately I've been wonderin' if that's really true
For a boy, time can be a lovely dance
Suddenly the music can fade
And leave the man alone and dreamless
Till he only sees that he's used up all his chances after all
Till now, only a miracle could do to save the man I'd turned into
Won't somebody let me know...where's my miracle?

Love, it always sang so easy
But just like a child who plays with imaginary friends
I could see the face of someone I believe only in the words of a song
Then she came along and got me dreamin'
That's when you began
And when I held you, I held a miracle in my hands
Till now, only a miracle could do
I found the boy I was, in you
You've come to let me know
There are miracles
And now, only a miracle could do
What I have finally found in you
And I've got to let you know
I believe miracles can happen in the end"

That's some killer songwriting right there.

I've avoided rock concerts for a very long time.  I prefer a couple of drinks watching a band in a smallish club.  I saw the Steve Gadd Band last year and sat at the edge of the stage and had dinner and drinks.  Got to talk shop with legendary guitarist Michael Landau while they took a break.  That's my idea of a good time.

But this year I got talked into seeing Warren Haynes, Cory Wong, the Rolling Stones, Counting Crows, and Santana. That should do it for a while.

I'm so over the concert thing. I always love the shows, but can't stomach the audience around me. Admittedly, it may have a lot to do with me being uncomfortable because I don't fit in the seats too well. Either way, I've seen some legends over the years, and I'm content with the memories.

Did I mention I have tickets to see Billy Joel and Stevie Nicks during the summer?

Bon Secours is where most rock/big name concerts are held.  Although I did see the Stones at Clemson Memorial Stadium in '89.  Think that was the only concert held at that stadium.

Let's do a little post-whorin'.  Since I've mentioned some of my all-time favorite albums, let's try to list what those are.

Here, in the order they came to me, are 20 albums I couldn't live without.  Note that these are not necessarily what I consider the best albums of all time.  But they all have two things in common.  First, each are linked essentially to particular periods of my life.  Second, when I put them on, I never have the urge to skip a song.

Dan Fogelberg - "Nether Lands"
Dan Fogelberg - "Captured Angel"
Rolling Stones - "Exile on Main Street"
Kenny Loggins - "Keep the Fire"
Michael McDonald - "If That's What It Takes"
Frank Sinatra - "Frank Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely"
Counting Crows - "August and Everything After"
Richard Thompson - "Semi-Detached Mock Tudor" (Live album)
Pink Floyd - "The Wall"
Boston - "Boston"

Today's Over/Under is 8
So...did we start a DEI initiative for Page 3?

I suppose Kenny Loggins is a worthy choice.  My first rock concert was Loggins & Messina, in 1974.
I saw them in '74 as well and Kenny last summer.

Don't think I've heard that song before, but those are some quality lyrics.
It's a deep cut, last track of the "High Adventure" album.  Michael McDonald helped write the music, and played the piano on the track.

It's worth the listen, I think.

Powerful stuff.

Got a herf scheduled for Saturday evening.  My dad, my brother Thad and I, with clan sept Mark B and his son-in-law Troy.  Mark is providing hababos to celebrate the birth of granddaughter Elanor.
Outstanding.  You providing the whiskey?
No, my dad is, courtesy of our friend John Blair, aka the "Hardware Magnate."  John won't be there, but he's known for his superb taste in Scotch.  John considers drinking any Scotch younger than 18 years to be cradle-robbing.

I just got the word that Peter Yarrow has died, from my friend who's been making a documentary film with Peter's wife Mary Beth.  Another piece of my childhood drops away.

Peter, Paul and Mary had two albums that could have made the runners up list of my post above, namely

"Peter, Paul and Mary"
"In the Wind"
"Album 1700"

"Album 1700" is an underappreciated gem.  It dropped in 1967, and is the only PP&M album that could legitimately be considered "art" among contemporaneous classics released that year by the Beatles, Hendrix, Cream, the Doors, Velvet Underground, and Janice Joplin.

By 1967 PP&M were out of the vanguard of "important" acts, and really, they'd always been interpreters of the songs of others.  But on "Album 1700," Peter Yarrow and Noel Paul Stookey were really working at it and produced some really great songs.  Yarrow contributed "Weep for Jamie" and "The Great Mandella" which are really haunting songs.  Stookey threw in "I Dig Rock and Roll Music" and "Whatshername," both of which wryly commented on the zeitgeist of the time.  The one glaring misstep on the album is "I'm in Love with a Big Blue Frog," which is charming and tries to fit in as a sly comment on racial and sexual taboos, but just doesn't have the weight of the other songs on the album.  It intrudes on the hypnotic flow of the album like a drunk frat-boy crashing a dinner party.

This is what I'm listening to at the moment, in honor of Peter.

That's a shame. I never actively listened to them, but I am familiar with their music, since my parents would play it often around the house.

Here are two I mentioned.  I was trying to pick one or the other, but these are both such deep songs.  I think "Whatshername" is the deeper of the cuts, but it's really more of a Paul Stookey solo thing.  "Mandella" includes their famous harmonies.

"The Great Mandella (The Wheel of Life)" - https://youtu.be/C12SwHLtAAg?si=jxFVj-vr1g-ZpRpi

Since November, I have been increasingly encountering a word I hadn't noticed before.  The word is "colorway," and it refers to color schemes.

Usage:  "The new Harley-Davidson models flex a new Cosmic Blue colorway that drapes the bike in a vibrant deep blue tone all around."

I'd never noticed it until last November, but have encountered it about a dozen times since then.

Turns out it comes from the fashion world, and has been around since the 1940s, but has been little used outside the fashion industry until the last couple of years.

It's a combination word (color+way), but not a portmanteau, which combines parts of two words.

So there you go.

Oh, "flex" is also a relatively new and increasingly popular usage to refer to something having particular attributes or characteristics.  It was borrowed from the bodybuilding world.  Now instead of "wearing" a new style, or "sporting" a new tattoo, or "rocking" a great accessory, you can "flex" it, and flexing is SO much more daring and exciting, isn't it?

Yeah, I'm a language geek.

Maybe it's my wallet talking, but I consider 15-18 years the sweet spot for my scotch.  Anything older tastes great, and if you're buying I will surely drink it and enjoy it, but I feel older than 18 years and scotch gets too smooth and starts to loose it's distinctive characteristics.
