First day back to work for me. I imagine it will be slow, but those tend to be famous last words.

I didn't intend to do it so soon, but all the Christmas decorations are already down and put away. The outside lights had been blown down by the heavy winds and the inside tree had nary a needle still on it. If I hadn't cut the tree down myself, I would have guessed it had been leftover from last year.

So far, so good. There is plenty to get done, but nothing earth-shattering to resolve. We are running with a skeleton crew today.

I was planning to be in the office today but have a wake to attend this afternoon and decided to work remotely instead. It was an elderly friend of the family that passed.

Morning, BackToTheGrindTony.

The kids and I were supposed to have dentist appts this morning, but they called to cancel because the hygentist didn't come in.

Our decorations are coming down today as well. But my tree is fake, so back in the container it goes.

Despite the dog eating the tree, I don't see us giving up on getting a real one each year. At this point, it's tradition.

Today is Thursday, Jan. 2, the second day of 2025.
There are 363 days left in the year.

Today in history:

On Jan. 2, 2016, a heavily armed group led by brothers Ammon and Ryan Bundy seized the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon, beginning a 41-day standoff to protest the imprisonment of two ranchers convicted of setting fires on public land and to demand the federal government turn over public lands to local control.

Also on this date:

In 1942, the Philippine capital of Manila was captured by Japanese forces during World War II.

In 1959, the Soviet spacecraft Luna 1 launched, becoming the first spacecraft to escape Earth’s gravity.

In 1971, 66 people were killed in a pileup of spectators leaving a soccer match at Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow, Scotland.

In 1974, President Richard Nixon signed legislation requiring states to limit highway speeds to 55 miles an hour as a way of conserving gasoline in the face of an OPEC oil embargo. (The 55 mph limit was effectively phased out in 1987; federal speed limits were abolished in 1995.)

In 2023, Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest after making a tackle during the first quarter of an NFL game against the Cincinnati Bengals, requiring life-saving treatment on the field. The game was cancelled; Hamlin would recover fully and return to play the following season.
