Happy Tuesday! In between insults we'll occasionally discuss cigars.  Join in and perhaps learn something along the way. Warning: don't proceed if you have thin skin but don't be afraid to post either... And welcome aboard!

Early check-in this morning. I just popped awake from a dream in which I was with Frank Zappa and I kept screwing up my attempts to fill out a $6000 check.

Maybe in a few minutes I'll feel sleepy again.

I am a little. If it were Jerry Jones, then it wouldn't surprise me. But the Cowboys team account seems a little low, even for that franchise.

Today is Tuesday, Jan. 24, the 24th day of 2023.
There are 341 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History:

On Jan. 24, 1984, Apple Computer began selling its first Macintosh model, which boasted a built-in 9-inch monochrome display, a clock rate of 8 megahertz and 128k of RAM.

On this date:

In 1848, James W. Marshall discovered a gold nugget at Sutter’s Mill in northern California, a discovery that led to the gold rush of ’49.

In 1943, President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill concluded a wartime conference in Casablanca, Morocco.

In 1945, Associated Press war correspondent Joseph Morton was among a group of captives executed by the Germans at the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp in Austria.

In 1965, British statesman Winston Churchill died in London at age 90.

In 1978, a nuclear-powered Soviet satellite, Cosmos 954, plunged through Earth’s atmosphere and disintegrated, scattering radioactive debris over parts of northern Canada.

In 1985, the space shuttle Discovery was launched from Cape Canaveral on the first secret, all-military shuttle mission.

In 1989, confessed serial killer Theodore Bundy was executed in Florida’s electric chair.

In 2003, former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge was sworn as the first secretary of the new Department of Homeland Security.

In 2011, a suicide bomber attacked Moscow’s busiest airport, killing 37 people; Chechen separatists claimed responsibility.

In 2020, Fifteen-year-old Coco Gauff upset defending champ Naomi Osaka in the third round of the Australian Open.

Ten years ago: Defense Secretary Leon Panetta announced the lifting of a ban on women serving in combat. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee opened a hearing into President Barack Obama’s nomination of Sen. John Kerry to be secretary of state. In Chicago, David Coleman Headley, an American drug dealer who had faced life in prison, was sentenced instead to 35 years for helping plan the deadly 2008 attacks on Mumbai, India - a punishment prosecutors said reflected his broad cooperation with U.S. investigators. New Orleans Hornets owner Tom Benson announced he was changing his team’s nickname to the Pelicans for the start of next season.

Five years ago: Former sports doctor Larry Nassar, who had admitted molesting some of the nation’s top gymnasts for years under the guise of medical treatment, was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison. Chipper Jones, Jim Thome, Vladimir Guerrero and Trevor Hoffman were elected to the baseball Hall of Fame. Scientists in China announced that they had used the cloning technique that produced Dolly the sheep to create healthy monkeys; it was the first such achievement in primates.

One year ago: The Pentagon ordered 8,500 troops on higher alert to potentially deploy to Europe as part of a NATO “response force” amid growing concern that Russia could soon make a military move on Ukraine. Judges approved a request for a special grand jury by the Georgia prosecutor investigating whether former President Donald Trump and others broke the law by trying to pressure Georgia officials to throw out Joe Biden’s presidential election victory. An analysis found that high school graduation rates dipped in at least 20 states after the first full school year disrupted by the pandemic.

It's the tartan of Clan Hay.  I'm of the Hay Clan on both my paternal and maternal side. My dad's third great grandmother was Christina Hay, and my mom was descended of Lady Elizabeth Hay IV (1506-1574). I have ancestral ties to the Campbells and the Douglases as well, but not blood ties, near as can be told.

My surname is German, but the great bulk of my ancestors, by far, was Scot and Scots-Irish. Seems even my German ancestors had an affection for Scottish lasses.

Sure. We're all friends here. ;-)

That picture is actually from Christmas 2021. On the left is #1 son Christian, and on the right is #2 son Connor. I have referred to Connor here on the banter as "the Duckling" because of the way he lets his mama dote on him. She doted on Christian, too, but he's an introvert and resisted it. Connor is the extrovert of the family, as the picture suggests, and likes being doted on.

Also, I tell both my sons that they owe me a debt of gratitude for their good looks, because I managed to convince this woman to marry a toad like me.

I'd have to at least agree on the looks part, because they're both spitting images of mom.

And now Pence has classified docs discovered at his home. There must be a big bin at the White House door with the docs in them, sorta like the government's take a penny, leave a penny tray.

Busy afternoon ahead. Pick up the oldest from school, kill an hour then pick up the other 2 from student council. Then it's home for a quick dinner (Taco Tuesday!) and back to school for college plus info night.
We'll be doing taco Tuesday as well. I can't wait.
We made four-cheese Ziti to take to a family gathering last night, and Carol made an extra tray because today's her birthday and she doesn't want to cook. No complaints from me. Her Ziti rocks.
A very happy birthday to surely one of the most patient women alive! :D
Bordering on Sainthood!   ;)

I'm sure many from the White House do.  Mix a couple of files in wherever, nobody checks when they are moving out.  When they find them though, they turn them in and no big deal.  That is until Big Orange made a spectacle of it.

No argument here.  You can clean up pretty well, but glad the boys take after her... ;)

All I can focus on is that fantastic scarf. Well done, on both counts.
Look a little bit Graham Nashy...

You're probably right about that. In the future, perhaps we should resolve to treat classified docs with a bit more security. Unless they just mark everything classified, like CNN says breaking news on the same story for 9 hours.

I think the whole media frenzy about it is stupid. This is absolutely NOT new. I expect George Washington ended up with some secret documents at Mt. Vernon after he left office.

This is an invented controversy. Whether it's pointed at Biden, Trump, or any other president. They all did it, and most of the time it's accidental AND the documents do not contain any truly sensitive material.

Is it right to agree?

That's a great looking family. Ducklings and toads included.

Perhaps more so in the early 90s. ;-)

Either he accidentally dropped it, or the snow bank is Buffalo's version of the canal.

Seems reasonable.

Ours were good as well, and we managed to get done in time to make it back to the school for the info session.

Just got back from a nice concert.  Lviv Philharmonic Orchestra made a stop in little ol' Clemson on their way north.  Going to be heading north playing both Carnegie and Radio City, then Boston before they head to Ohio (think they said Cleveland and Cincinnati) and Chicago.

Leftover Ziti and garlic bread, before they go to be heated up.

I know, Italians don't get the American thing about bread with dinner.

But this is going to rock.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230125/d3e301a36e1fb81668abd2085afb115c.jpg)
