Sorry to have left you humping all alone today. Been up since 5 but had to take my daughter to Penn Station in NYC before doing an about face and heading to work.

More visibility, advertising and innovation than much of the time Nat Sherman owned them.  May be why they went belly up.

Today is Wednesday, Oct. 12, the 285th day of 2022.
There are 80 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History:

On Oct. 12, 1976, it was announced in China that Hua Guofeng had been named to succeed the late Mao Zedong as chairman of the Communist Party; it was also announced that Mao’s widow and three others, known as the “Gang of Four,” had been arrested.

On this date:

In 1492 (according to the Old Style calendar), Christopher Columbus’ expedition arrived in the present-day Bahamas.

In 1792, the first recorded U.S. celebration of Columbus Day was held to mark the tricentennial of Christopher Columbus’ landing.

In 1870, General Robert E. Lee died in Lexington, Virginia, at age 63.

In 1933, bank robber John Dillinger escaped from a jail in Allen County, Ohio, with the help of his gang, who killed the sheriff, Jess Sarber.

In 1971, the rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar” opened at the Mark Hellinger Theatre on Broadway.

In 1973, President Richard Nixon nominated House minority leader Gerald R. Ford of Michigan to succeed Spiro T. Agnew as vice president.

In 1984, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher escaped an attempt on her life when an Irish Republican Army bomb exploded at a hotel in Brighton, England, killing five people.

In 1986, the superpower meeting in Reykjavik, Iceland, ended in stalemate, with President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev unable to agree on arms control or a date for a full-fledged summit in the United States.

In 2000, 17 sailors were killed in a suicide bomb attack on the destroyer USS Cole in Yemen.

In 2002, bombs blamed on al-Qaida-linked militants destroyed a nightclub on the Indonesian island of Bali, killing 202 people, including 88 Australians and seven Americans.

In 2007, former Vice President Al Gore and the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change won the Nobel Peace Prize for sounding the alarm over global warming.

In 2011, a Nigerian al-Qaida operative pleaded guilty to trying to bring down a jetliner with a bomb in his underwear; Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab (OO’-mahr fah-ROOK’ ahb-DOOL’-moo-TAH’-lahb) defiantly told a federal judge in Detroit that he had acted in retaliation for the killing of Muslims worldwide.

Ten years ago: Thousands of supporters and opponents of Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi clashed in Cairo’s Tahrir Square in the first such violence since Morsi took office more than three months earlier. The European Union won the Nobel Peace Prize for fostering peace on a continent long ravaged by war.

Five years ago: The Trump administration said it would “immediately” halt payments to insurers under the Obama-era health care law. President Donald Trump lashed out at hurricane-devastated Puerto Rico, saying the federal government can’t keep sending help “forever” and suggesting that the U.S. territory was to blame for its financial struggles.

One year ago: The New Jersey Nets said Kyrie Irving could not play or practice with them until he could be a full participant; New York City required professional athletes to be vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to play or practice in public venues. (Irving would be allowed to rejoin the team for out-of-town games in January 2022, and for home games two months later.) The head of the Chicago police officers union called on its members to defy the city’s requirement to report their COVID-19 vaccination status or be placed on unpaid leave. The Boeing Co. told employees they must be vaccinated against COVID-19 or possibly be fired. Florida issued its first fine to a county that it said had violated a new state law banning coronavirus vaccine mandates; Leon County was fined $3.5 million.

Bit of excitement at my house at about 1 this morning. Was woken up by the sound of my youngest yelling. She had her laptop plugged in next to her bed, and apparently, a metal bracelet she had sitting either on her bed or on the windowsill above her bed fell down and landed right in the space where the plug connected to the wall, shorting it out and causing a spark and a puff of smoke. Scared her something fierce. Replaced the fuse she blew and went back to sleep. Both the plug and the bracelet now sport a nice black scorch mark.

After my second guess, I was down to about 17 words.  I had one vowel incorrectly placed, and one vowel I hadn't used. I had also accounted for 7 of the top 8 most commonly appearing letters in 5-letter words.   So, I put the yellow vowel in the place it actually most commonly appears, and looked for words that had the missing vowel.

I don't want to put any spoilers out there, but I'll say this.  The third guess was a position-play.  I was attempting to come out of it certain of the placement of two letters.  So I chose that guess for specifically that.   It just happened to be the correct word.
Well, it certainly worked in your favor.

No worries, sometimes I get too focused on making something with a certain combination, so I need to take a break from it, come back later with a more open mind. Usually works well, as it did in this case.

There are about 24 words with that particular condition, but only 3 that included my incorrectly placed vowel.  So, in retrospect I had a 1-in-3 chance of guessing correctly by trying to play it that way.  And of those 3, only one had the incorrectly-placed vowel where I had resolved to put it for the third guess.  So...there you go.

Lucky it didn't fry the laptop too.
To be honest, I'm not even sure if she checked it in the hubbub. Maybe it did.
Just went to check, and it still seems to be working fine. Though, I AM going to have to replace the outlet. Not sure if it still works or not, I'm guessing not. But it definitely has the look of an outlet that took a shock. Lol

In non-wordle news, got some pork in the slow cooker for dinner tonight and the house is starting to smell fantastic.
I've got the main part of the slow cooker in the dishwasher (wonderful to have one of those again) and dreaming of what to make in it tomorrow. We didn't get home from soccer until 10 last evening and I was in no mood to prepare anything.
Chicken marsala.  Pulled pork. Goulash.
Pulled pork is our choice tonight.

Finishing lunch, about time for a grocery store run.
Senior discount on Wednesday (5%)  except on booze.
Oh, and it's $5 sushi Wednesday as well.  Woohoo!  Have to fight through the throng of students however.  Little Asian ladies right there turning them out so nice and fresh.  Got a spicy, crunchy albacore roll.

Really don't need to go every week.  Pretty well stocked so that I could hold out here for at least a month.   Mostly go to get the weeks milk, New York crumb cake for weekend breakfast, sushi and then whatever BOGO items that I regularly use.  For example, last week I got 10 boxes of Great Grains cereal.
Cereal is like $4.50 a box now so when BOGO I stock up.  This will hold me until the next time it's BOGO.

Early game 2 for the CLE @ NY ALDS today.
I could have sworn game 2 was today. Googled it now and they are calling for the game tomorrow evening instead. Sheesh.

That played out weird.

Wordle 480 3/6

That seems awful suspicious.
Now that I attempted it, I'm especially suspicious.
