Today is Sunday, July 24, the 205th day of 2022.
There are 160 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History:

On July 24, 1915, the SS Eastland, a passenger ship carrying more than 2,500 people, rolled onto its side while docked at the Clark Street Bridge on the Chicago River; an estimated 844 people died in the disaster.

On this date:

In 1847, Mormon leader Brigham Young and his followers arrived in the Great Salt Lake Valley in present-day Utah.

In 1866, Tennessee became the first state to be readmitted to the Union after the Civil War.

In 1911, Yale University history professor Hiram Bingham III found the “Lost City of the Incas,” Machu Picchu, in Peru.

In 1937, the state of Alabama dropped charges against four of the nine young Black men accused of raping two white women in the “Scottsboro Case.”

In 1959, during a visit to Moscow, Vice President Richard Nixon engaged in his famous “Kitchen Debate” with Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev.

In 1969, the Apollo 11 astronauts — two of whom had been the first men to set foot on the moon — splashed down safely in the Pacific.

In 1974, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously ruled that President Richard Nixon had to turn over subpoenaed White House tape recordings to the Watergate special prosecutor.

In 1975, an Apollo spacecraft splashed down in the Pacific, completing a mission which included the first-ever docking with a Soyuz capsule from the Soviet Union.

In 1998, the motion picture “Saving Private Ryan,” starring Tom Hanks and directed by Steven Spielberg, was released.

In 2010, a stampede inside a tunnel crowded with techno music fans left 21 people dead and more than 500 injured at the famed Love Parade festival in western Germany.

In 2016, Ken Griffey Jr. and Mike Piazza were inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

In 2019, in a day of congressional testimony, Robert Mueller dismissed President Donald Trump’s claim of “total exoneration” in Mueller’s probe of Russia’s 2016 election interference.

Ten years ago: In his first foreign policy speech since emerging as the likely Republican presidential nominee, Mitt Romney called for an independent investigation into claims the White House had leaked national security information for President Barack Obama’s political gain; the White House replied that the president “has made abundantly clear that he has no tolerance for leaks.” Actor Chad Everett died in Los Angeles at age 75. Actor Sherman Hemsley died in El Paso, Texas, at age 74.

Five years ago: In a speech to a national Boy Scout gathering in West Virginia, President Donald Trump railed against his enemies and promoted his political agenda, bringing an angry reaction from some parents and former Scouts from both parties. Trump’s son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner answered questions from Senate investigators for four hours about contacts with Russians during and after Trump’s campaign for the White House; he said he “did not collude with Russia” and that all of his actions “were proper.” A Taliban suicide bomber killed 24 people in an early morning assault in a neighborhood of the Afghan capital where prominent politicians lived.

One year ago: Jackie Mason, a rabbi-turned-comedian who took his sharp wit and piercing social commentary to Catskills nightclubs, West Coast talk shows and Broadway stages, died at 93.

That's in the hands of the sound tech. I don't use an amp at church, I direct-inject a Fractal Audio FM3 processor to the PA to make all the guitar noise.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220724/28bb531b7cc6cba59c75503c974d1b8c.jpg)

Rather than putting a microphone in front of a guitar amp, I run a cable from my processor directly to FOH (front-of-house mixer). The processor models hundreds of amps, effects, and microphones. So I can make it sound like I'm cranking a Marshall stack, without deafening the audience.

Sounds impressive but you lost me at direct-inject.
Rather than putting a microphone in front of a guitar amp, I run a cable from my processor directly to FOH (front-of-house mixer). The processor models hundreds of amps, effects, and microphones. So I can make it sound like I'm cranking a Marshall stack, without deafening the audience.
How did it go?

Morning, muchachos.
Good morning, Bret. Ready for your sermon?
Not preaching. I only do that a coupla times a year. But I've got the Telecaster sounding great, and the band sounding pretty good.
I thought everyone else was on vacation? In any case, don't turn the amp up too high. You'll blow them all away.

It went well. But it was complicated by a security threat. An apparently profoundly schizophrenic guy showed up and caused a ruckus in the parking lot before the service. The police were called in. Then he decided to come to church. We have an armed security team, that I train, so we were on high alert. We managed to get through the service without incident, and without most of the congregation knowing and being distracted by it. But I had four people watching him closely, and one positioned in a seat behind him, and two of us onstage were armed and ready to react.

This is church in the modern age. If you're going to serve the community, you also have to be alert to protect it.

And in the two hours since the service ended, we have worked up an extensive profile on the guy. He posts prolifically on Facebook, and a lot of it is really disturbing. One of my guys has a mother who is schizophrenic, and he said Kirt's posts resemble what his mother writes.

But now we all know him by name. My dad gave him some money, and a bunch of us introduced ourselves. We try to engage these people as best we can. But we watch them carefully.

You've mentioned the security part of this before. Glad you didn't have any incident but were well prepared.

Enumclaw, the little town I live in, is about 40 miles south and east of Seattle, about 20 miles east of Tacoma. Historically, it's a one-horse town, a logging town and a dairy town, and then, since the 1960s, a bedroom community for airline pilots. Logging is pretty much dead. We still have dairies. But it's been gentrifying over the past ten years, such that now we actually have some destination restaurants...including Il Siciliano.

An Italian/Sicilian restaurant on the west coast, you ask doubtfully? Yes. Owned and managed by real Sicilian, first generation immigrants, cooking, they claim, from grandma's recipes. It's pretty amazing, which is saying a lot because until they came to town, my favorite Italian restaurant was in Binghamton NY.

#1 son and I decided to have a late lunch there today. Pizza and beer. Not Italian beer, a local pilsner that went with pizza really well. And the pizza was amazing.

And no, that's not pineapple on the Margherita. It's chunks of Mozzarell'.
