Morning, boyos. Kids back to school today. Sucks to go back to having to pick them up afterwards, but it'll be nice to have the house quiet again during the day.

Went out to my parents house yesterday for my mom's birthday, and my dad and I went up to the driving range in their development. Was really surprised by how well I hit the ball for the first time out in months. Especially the new club. Hit it 3 times, each one was perfect. Promptly put it right back in the bag and moved on to something else, didn't want to waste all of its mojo so early in the year.

For those of you playing along from home: I'm in 212/289 place in my bracket. Still have 3 teams eligible to be in the final four but Duke was the dagger that killed my dreams. I had Michigan State in the finals.

You're low down, but I bet 3 out of 4 possibles remaining is pretty good, comparable to everyone else.

I get what you're saying but I need to be in the top 5 to see any money and that is just not likely. My goal at this point is to finish in the top third. I'll give it the old college try again next year.

Today is Monday, March 21, the 80th day of 2022.
There are 285 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History:

On March 21, 1965, civil rights demonstrators led by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. began their third, successful march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.

On this date:

In 1685, composer Johann Sebastian Bach was born in Eisenach, Germany.

In 1935, Persia officially changed its name to Iran.

In 1945, during World War II, Allied bombers began four days of raids over Germany.

In 1952, the Moondog Coronation Ball, considered the first rock and roll concert, took place at Cleveland Arena.

In 1972, the Supreme Court, in Dunn v. Blumstein, ruled that states may not require at least a year’s residency for voting eligibility.

In 1990, Namibia became an independent nation as the former colony marked the end of 75 years of South African rule.

In 1997, President Bill Clinton and Russian President Boris Yeltsin wrapped up their summit in Helsinki, Finland, still deadlocked over NATO expansion, but able to agree on slashing nuclear weapons arsenals.

In 2007, former Vice President Al Gore made an emotional return to Congress as he pleaded with House and Senate committees to fight global warming; skeptical Republicans questioned the science behind his climate-change documentary, “An Inconvenient Truth.”

In 2016, laying bare a half-century of tensions, President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro prodded each other over human rights and the longstanding U.S. economic embargo during an unprecedented joint news conference in Havana.

In 2019, President Donald Trump abruptly declared that the U.S. would recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the disputed Golan Heights, a major shift in American policy.

In 2020 during a White House briefing, President Donald Trump doubled down on his support for the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine as a possible treatment for the coronavirus, while Dr. Anthony Fauci said the evidence was “anecdotal.”

Ten years ago: A previously divided U.N. Security Council sent a strong and united message to the Syrian government and its opposition, telling both sides to immediately implement proposals by international envoy Kofi Annan to end Syria’s yearlong bloodshed. Meting out unprecedented punishment for a bounty system that targeted key opposing players, the NFL suspended New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton without pay for the coming season and indefinitely banned the team’s former defensive coordinator; Commissioner Roger Goodell fined the Saints $500,000 and took away two draft picks.

Five years ago: U.S. and British officials announced they were barring laptops and tablets from the cabins of some international flights because of longstanding concerns about terrorists targeting jetliners. On the second day of his Senate confirmation hearing, Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch declared he’d made no promises to President Donald Trump or anyone else about how he would vote on abortion or other issues. Chuck Barris, whose game show empire included “The Dating Game,” “The Newlywed Game” and “The Gong Show,” died at his home in Palisades, New York, at age 87.

One year ago: Officials in Miami Beach extended an emergency 8 p.m. curfew for at least another week; the move came after after fights, gunfire, property destruction and dangerous stampedes broke out among huge crowds of people during the spring break season.

I know I am patting myself on the back here but DAMN, did I do a good job getting this site back up and running! I wish I could show you the mess that GoDaddy support made of the place. I was so close to packing it up for good. And now with all the latest updates and encryption, the site is actually better than it was before. The only regret is that we lost some weeks of posts. I am certain there was some priceless content there that is now lost forever.  :(

En la clase SSP, pistola de servicio estándar. Eventualmente pondré una óptica en la pistola, y luego tendré que competir en ESP: pistola de servicio mejorada.

No tengo idea si estoy teniendo algún sentido. Nunca he aprendido a hablar de disparar en español.

Standard Service Pistol is pretty much how it sounds.  It's a stock pistol, with no structural modifications.  Enhanced Service Pistol allows certain modifications.

I misspoke about going to Enhanced.  When I put a reflex optic on my gun, I will have to compete in the newly created Carry Optics division.

Well, I don't know the details of this stuff, but do appreciate the effort.  You said early on that the transition was going to be difficult, and clearly you have it working as well if not better than before.  And you've kept the bell and whistle... :D   ;)

Seems like next you need to add some sort of translator.
But the upside is, looks like I got to hit 30k for the second time. Maybe I'll actually keep my new stars this time. :D
Congrats on 30K!

About 60° today and tomorrow. Wednesday's commute into NYC will be tougher - in the low 40s.

Morning, muchachos.
Hola, Bret. ¿Como fue to fin de semana?
Bien, bien. Competí en un partido IDPA el sábado y disparé con precisión. Me encanta la nueva pistola, absolutamente.
Not gonna lie, I had to look up IDPA. ¿Como clasificaste en la competencia?
En la clase SSP, pistola de servicio estándar. Eventualmente pondré una óptica en la pistola, y luego tendré que competir en ESP: pistola de servicio mejorada.

No tengo idea si estoy teniendo algún sentido. Nunca he aprendido a hablar de disparar en español.
Lucky for you, I wouldn't understand this in English either.  ;D

I guess my question was how about score and ranking? How do competitions like this work?
Ah. Well, I'm still considerd a Novice, because I haven't had a chance to shoot a Qualifier since the pandemic began.

It's all about accuracy, the clock, and the design of the stage. Each stage is different. Sometimes the stage limits the number of rounds you can shoot, or the number of rounds you can start with in the gun. In any stage you might have "no-shoot" targets (hostages or innocent bystanders), or the targets may limit where you must place the shots (head-shots, covered zones). The stage will specify how many shots must be placed, and where, to neutralize each target. Failure to neutralize the target with the appropriate number of shots incurs a time penalty. Additionally, each target has areas defined for appropriate shots. Put the required number of holes into the ideal zones on the targets, and there is no penalty, but there are zones that will penalize you a second, or two seconds, or three seconds. Failure to neutralize the target incurs a 5-scond penalty. Shooting a no-shoot target can incur a 10-second penalty. Failing to observe tactical priority incurs a penalty, and in some cases failing to observe tactical sequence incurs a penalty. Also, violation of fundamental safety rules can get you disqualified and escorted off the range. There are also procedural penalties for shooting too many shots, or for violating faultlines, or for leaving magazines on the ground with ammo in them.

Confused yet? It's simpler than it sounds.

Essentially, it's about neutralizing all the targets as quickly as possible without incuring penalties. Accuracy is more important than speed, because the penalties hurt, but winning is about completing each course as quickly as possible.

I was about midway in the pack. 44th out of 84.
