Title: 2/15/2022
Post by: CigarBanter on February 15, 2022, 12:45:47 AM
Happy Tuesday! In between insults we'll occasionally discuss cigars.  Join in and perhaps learn something along the way. Warning: don't proceed if you have thin skin but don't be afraid to post either... And welcome aboard!

Ask any Tom, Dick, or Harry what his favorite brand of cigar is, and chances are he’ll blurt out, “Macanudo”. I'm not so sure of that but it is one of the most known with MonteCristo I would say.

I would probably vote Cohiba.

That's not the case with me. I have often been called a dick but my name is actually none of the above.

There is this second shift housekeeper where I work. We got to talking one day and he asked me where can I find a cigar like Columbo smokes? I told him there are not to many candela cigars. He went on to say I smoke Cohibas. I said oh yeah which one? He did not know there was more than one. I said I tell you what tomorrow I will bring you a cigar. I gave him a Espinoza Crema. He said he smoked it and got so sick he even called off the next day. He is not the only person I got sick from a cigar.

Agreed. Seems he wasn't smoking it right. Was he inhaling it?

I've gotten green from a cigar before but I usually eat something and it goes away. I call BS on being sick the next day.

speaking of Richards. when I was working for Bridges we were sealing bridge sub-structures with a new chemical from Albany that was suppose to be environmentally safe. it was called Environseal. the MSDS sheets said it was safe for aquatic plants and wildlife. we were spraying at a section of Nine Mile Creek in Onondage County that is one of the most protected streams in the state. a guy from NYS DEC shows up and stated we had to shut down the operation as we were 'polluting' the creek. I asked who he was and he says "I'm Richard Head and don't call me Dick." I couldn't help but laugh. took 5 years in court for NYS DOT to answer charges from NYS DEC. Bridges won but we needed to change our sealing methods. when I testified in court reading the safe use of the sealer but it fell apart when I was asked that if it was so safe would I drink it?

Today is Tuesday, Feb. 15, the 46th day of 2022.
There are 319 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History:

On Feb. 15, 1879, President Rutherford B. Hayes signed a bill allowing female attorneys to argue cases before the Supreme Court.

On this date:

In 1764, the site of present-day St. Louis was established by Pierre Laclede and Auguste Chouteau.

In 1898, the U.S. battleship Maine mysteriously blew up in Havana Harbor, killing more than 260 crew members and bringing the United States closer to war with Spain.

In 1933, President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt escaped an assassination attempt in Miami that mortally wounded Chicago Mayor Anton J. Cermak; gunman Giuseppe Zangara was executed more than four weeks later.

In 1944, Allied bombers destroyed the monastery atop Monte Cassino (MAWN’-tay kah-SEE’-noh) in Italy.

In 1961, 73 people, including an 18-member U.S. figure skating team en route to the World Championships in Czechoslovakia, were killed in the crash of a Sabena Airlines Boeing 707 in Belgium.

In 1965, singer Nat King Cole, 45, died in Santa Monica, California.

In 1967, the rock band Chicago was founded by Walter Parazaider, Terry Kath, Danny Seraphine, Lee Loughnane (LAHK’-nayn), James Pankow and Robert Lamm; the group originally called itself The Big Thing.

In 1989, the Soviet Union announced that the last of its troops had left Afghanistan, after more than nine years of military intervention.

In 1992, a Milwaukee jury found that Jeffrey Dahmer was sane when he killed and mutilated 15 men and boys. (The decision meant that Dahmer, who had already pleaded guilty to the murders, would receive a mandatory life sentence for each count; Dahmer was beaten to death in prison in 1994.)

In 2003, millions of protesters around the world demonstrated against the prospect of a U.S. attack on Iraq.

In 2005, defrocked priest Paul Shanley was sentenced in Boston to 12 to 15 years in prison on child rape charges.

In 2020, the U.S. government said Americans who were on board a cruise ship under quarantine in Japan because of the coronavirus would be flown back home on a chartered flight, but that they would face another two-week quarantine; about 380 Americans were aboard the Diamond Princess.

Ten years ago: Congressional negotiators sealed an agreement on legislation to renew a payroll tax cut for 160 million workers and jobless benefits for millions more. In defiant swipes at its foes, Iran said it was dramatically closer to mastering the production of nuclear fuel even as the U.S. weighed tougher pressure on the Tehran government.

Five years ago: President Donald Trump’s nominee for labor secretary, Andrew Puzder, abruptly withdrew his nomination after Senate Republicans balked at supporting him, in part over taxes he had belatedly paid on a former housekeeper not authorized to work in the United States. In an ultimatum to America’s allies, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told fellow NATO members to increase military spending by year’s end or risk seeing the U.S. curtail its defense support.

One year ago: A sprawling blast of winter weather brought unusual snow and cold into Texas, knocking out power for more than 4 million people and sending temperatures into the single digits as far south as San Antonio; the icy blast across the Deep South would later be blamed for more than 100 deaths in Texas and dozens more across other Southern states. Salsa music idol Johnny Pacheco died at 85 in New York, where he’d been hospitalized with pneumonia. Michael McDowell stunned NASCAR by scoring his first career victory in the Daytona 500, charging through a crash scene when Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano wrecked racing for the win; the race ended early on a Monday morning after a rain delay of nearly six hours.

There is a glaring omission in this list.  On this day in 1946, the first general purpose programmable computer - ENIAC - was unveiled to the public.  It was originally conceived to calculate ballistics tables, but its first actual accomplishment was a feasibility study for the hydrogen bomb.

It was notorious for buring out vacuum tubes.  Initially, it was down about every other day.  Eventually, engineers managed to get it to remain functional for up to five days in a row.

We're always open to edits and additions.

I was wondering how you were doing. I'm glad you are on the mend. I hope you continue to improve.
Seriously.

A friend of mine said instead of resigning, he should run for Congress and make this his platform. Even expand it to include everything leading to prostitution.

In his defense, it's been very cold here lately and we've had snow on the ground for like a month straight. That's enough to fuck with anyone's reasoning skills.

Should be up there tomorrow and Wednesday, before another round of shit comes in. But it should be a pretty nice 36 hours or so.

I admit he appears to be completely off the wall but politicians in higher offices have said far worse things and were not forced to resign.

Still below freezing here. It's supposed to warm up significantly on Thursday and then get cold again.

Well, he did choose to resign. Though he was almost certainly pressured to do so, it was still his choice, same one any politician who says something stupid has.

That sounds like a grand idea. I still have some work to finish, however. Heading out to Long Island later to see Billie Eilish with the family. Happy Valentines Day to us all.

That is not a narrow field these days, in fact it's a requirement in certain circles.

Well, if there's anything that is understood in DC, it's whores.

Personally, I don't think that's a bad thing. We praise rock stars for saying outrageous things, and consider them heroes for their bravado. Why should it be different for politicians?

Chevy Chase is in the news again. He's notorious for being an asshole. He says, "I just don't give a crap. I am what I am."

It'd be great if everyone just took that view.

Anymore it's gotten to the point I respect assholes whose response to accusations is "Fuck you." That beats hell out of mealy-mouthed apologies.

Donald Trump is an asshole. So is AOC. So are Mitch McConnell, Ted Cruz, Joe Biden, Hunter Biden, Joe Manchin, Nancy Pelosi, Gavin Newsome, Joe Rogan, and all the broadcasters on Fox News and CNN, Raz Gueado, Golfin' Dave, Bruce Springsteen, Hillary Clinton, and those little bitches on The View. These are not heroes. They're assholes. They have opinions. Opinions are like assholes. They all got shit on them and smell like it.

Chevy Chase may be an asshole, but he's got the guts to say, "I don't care. Fuck you" while everyone else is groveling to be in the good graces of whoever.

Grow a pair of testicles. Regardless of your gender identity.

Sounds like my forecast. Factor in some flooding with highs in the low 50s and an inch of rain.
