Happy Tuesday! In between insults we'll occasionally discuss cigars. Join in and perhaps learn something along the way. Warning: don't proceed if you have thin skin but don't be afraid to post either... And welcome aboard!

Morning, twofers!
-
Good morning, post whores. Eleven pages yesterday, wow! It was looking like the old days.

We were on fire. Which was nearly literal in Raz's case.

My admittedly quick scrolling back took me all the way to 7/17/20 as the last time we hit 11 pages.

Hopefully rapidly. Though, that seems like the formula for some interesting weather.

That sounds about right. All it takes is more banterers.

And work gets in the way.

Morning, muchachos. It was 97° at 8:30 last night. By midnight it was 72°. When I snapped awake at 3:55 it was 62°.
That high-pressure shit can get bent.

Did all the windows in the house shatter?

It's just lovely now, except for snapping awake shivering at 4am. Ah, well.

They were all open, as was every door, with fans going full tilt to pump heat out...so no.
-
Happy early Tuesday morning to you, Raz. Did you wind up taking today off?
Nah. The drop wasn't as rapid as they suggested, and my ADD kicked in. I went to bed. Taking tomorrow afternoon off to jam with the band.

I'm just imagining like pyrex going from oven to fridge. Of course, it only felt that extreme but I do know windows weren't going to shatter.

That sounds like a good plan too.

Supposed to hit 91 today, which still won't be fun but will suck far less than 108.

After all, it's summer!

Well Bret, if I were you I'd head back to bed for a bit.
-

I'm in bed. But going back to sleep isn't likely. So think I'll shower and get an early start. I'll take a long lunch and grab a nap.

Our CTO (located in Geneva) was doing something nice and bought members of the project team 20€ Amazon gift cards at his own personal expenses. I'm able to login to amazon.fr with my same credentials and redeem the gift card. However, the money stays in France. The balance is not reflected in my U.S. account.

That's pretty cool. I wonder if it ships from France or somewhere here.

Just for giggles, I can try buying something and having it shipped here. Unfortunately, I don't have Prime on that account.

I'd say I was shocked by all this. But my sister was a financial analyst at Amazon for several years, so I know what a tangled mess of systems Amazon is.

Today is Tuesday, June 29, the 180th day of 2021.
There are 185 days left in the year.
Today’s Highlight in History:
On June 29, 1927, the first trans-Pacific airplane flight was completed as U.S. Army Air Corps Lt. Lester J. Maitland and Lt. Albert F. Hegenberger arrived at Wheeler Field in Hawaii aboard the Bird of Paradise, an Atlantic-Fokker C-2, after flying 2,400 miles from Oakland, California, in 25 hours, 50 minutes.
On this date:
In 1520, Montezuma II, the ninth and last emperor of the Aztecs, died in Tenochtitlan (tay-nohch-TEET’-lahn) under unclear circumstances (some say he was killed by his own subjects; others, by the Spanish).
In 1613, London’s original Globe Theatre, where many of Shakespeare’s plays were performed, was destroyed by a fire sparked by a cannon shot during a performance of “Henry VIII.”
In 1767, Britain approved the Townshend Revenue Act, which imposed import duties on glass, paint, oil, lead, paper and tea shipped to the American colonies. (Colonists bitterly protested, prompting Parliament to repeal the duties — except for tea.)
In 1776, the Virginia state constitution was adopted, and Patrick Henry was made governor.
In 1946, authorities in British-ruled Palestine arrested more than 2,700 Jews in an attempt to stamp out extremists.
In 1956, film star Marilyn Monroe married playwright Arthur Miller in a civil ceremony in White Plains, New York. (The couple also wed in a Jewish ceremony on July 1; the marriage lasted 4 1/2 years).
In 1967, Jerusalem was re-unified as Israel removed barricades separating the Old City from the Israeli sector.
In 1970, the United States ended a two-month military offensive into Cambodia.
In 1972, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a trio of death sentences, saying the way they had been imposed constituted cruel and unusual punishment. (The ruling prompted states to effectively impose a moratorium on executions until their capital punishment laws could be revised.)
In 1995, the space shuttle Atlantis and the Russian Mir space station linked in orbit, beginning a historic five-day voyage as a single ship. A department store in Seoul (sohl), South Korea, collapsed, killing at least 500 people. Actor Lana Turner died in Century City, California, at age 74.
In 2006, the Supreme Court ruled, 5-3, that President George W. Bush’s plan to try Guantanamo Bay detainees in military tribunals violated U.S. and international law.
In 2009, disgraced financier Bernard Madoff received a 150-year sentence for his multibillion-dollar fraud. (Madoff died in prison in April 2021.)
-
Ten years ago: In the first ruling by a federal appeals court on President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul, a panel in Cincinnati handed the administration a victory by agreeing that the government could require a minimum amount of insurance for Americans. Greece fended off bankruptcy as lawmakers backed austerity measures in the face of riots that left more than 100 injured.
Five years ago: President Barack Obama and the leaders of Mexico and Canada, meeting in Ottawa, pushed back forcefully against the isolationist and anti-immigrant sentiments roiling Britain and championed by GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump.
One year ago: New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said he had a plan to cut the city police department budget by $1 billion; the announcement came a week after a “defund the police” protest became a full-blown occupation outside City Hall. (The City Council would approve a plan to shift $1 billion from policing to education and social services in the coming year.) Two published studies revealed that at least 285 U.S. children had developed a serious inflammatory condition linked to the coronavirus. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell became the highest-ranking Republican in Congress to encourage Americans to wear a mask as protection against the coronavirus. A divided Supreme Court reasserted a commitment to abortion rights, striking down a Louisiana law requiring that doctors who perform abortions have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals. Former police officer Joseph James DeAngelo, the Golden State Killer who terrorized Northern California in the 1970s, pleaded guilty to 13 counts of murder in exchange for a life sentence instead of a possible death penalty. Comedy writer, actor and director Carl Reiner died at his California home at 98.

A flag represents an ideal higher than ourselves, the ideal over the individual. The problem with most of the modern world, and especially the LGBTQX movement, is that both are violently opposed to the notion that there is anything higher than the individual. For the LGBTQX movement, the notion of a higher ideal is historically threatening.
Some would say, "Wait...most of the world wants socialism, which is collectivism, right?" But the reason all forms of socialism, including communism and fascism, ultimately fail is that none of them can get around the fundamental self-centeredness of the human, and having the state stand in for a higher power leads to really ugly results - equally as ugly, if not uglier, than having religion stand in for government.
No matter how much is given, humans want more. If they achieve equality, humans demand equity. If they achieve tolerance, they demand affirmation. We scream for equality and equity, but given the first chance to get more than the next guy, we'll sell our children and run over grandma to get it. It's the nature of the species.
Flags represent obligation. People don't like obligation. It interferes with their pleasure.

Pretty much sums it up, although I would say there are true altruists out there, and there have been times in (our) history where people have sacrificed for the greater good.
On the other hand while waving individualist flags, most people are sheep and seem to want to be led, whether by religion, by cults or cults of personality or your favorite porn star's opinion.

There is always the exception that proves the rule.
And a cult of personality is nothing more than the empty promise that the adherent will get what they think they deserve without having to work for, compete for, and earn it, and that their failure to already have it is somebody's fault other than their own. It's Whitey's fault. It's the immigrant's fault. It's the Jews, the Muslims, the CisGendered, the 1%, BLM, AOC, or the Deep State. It's the Corporate Fat Cats. It's the Welfare Queens. It's the queers. It's the Communists, the Libtards, the Conservatives, the GOP, the Democrats, the Russians, the feminists, the Catholics, the Protestants, and ISIL. It's the cops. It's the criminals. It's the hippies. It's the hipsters. It's the NRA. It's the gun-grabbers.
It's all bullshit. You don't get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate. And the more you fail to negotiate and the more you hand over the negotiation to the state, the more the man sticks it right up your poop-chute.

Maybe we should all go back to family crests, then everyone can have whatever they want. Stripes, colors, no colors, bears, snakes, whatever.

FOX news ought to be good with this topic for a while (and avoid trying to insult the military)
It was only a matter of time that the English language was declared racist....

And let's just bring it to Page 3 for ClemsonDave's entrance...
He's late.
He's on #RetiredTime so he can't be late.
Being retired is no excuse to be feeble. ;-)
What do you mean? That's my whole retirement plan.
Be careful with that, or the kids will put you in a nursing home.
I'm pretty sure that's what's gonna happen anyway.

Good to have Mr. Dean and Rick stop in yesterday.

Feels like Italy's the favorite at this point, as well as they've been playing for so long. But anything can happen.

I was half-expecting, and hoping, not to be activated to the state COVID-19 Incident Management Team for the 15th month in a row. But, here I am, all freshly re-drafted and ready for my 15th tour of duty. It's okay, the overtime will cover more contributions to the IRA, more home improvements, and more guitar and studio gear. I think I'll be Johnny Productive and grab all the OT I can squeeze in. Maybe assemble a small PA.
