Today is Friday, May 15, the 136th day of 2020. There are 230 days left in the year.
Today’s Highlight in History:
On May 15, 1948, hours after declaring its independence, the new state of Israel was attacked by Transjordan, Egypt, Syria, Iraq and Lebanon.
On this date:
In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed an act establishing the Department of Agriculture.
In 1918, U.S. airmail began service between Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and New York.
In 1930, registered nurse Ellen Church, the first airline stewardess, went on duty aboard an Oakland-to-Chicago flight operated by Boeing Air Transport, a forerunner of United Airlines.
In 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed a measure creating the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps, whose members came to be known as WACs. Wartime gasoline rationing went into effect in 17 Eastern states, limiting sales to three gallons a week for non-essential vehicles.
In 1954, the Fender Stratocaster guitar, created by Leo Fender, was officially released.
In 1963, Weight Watchers was incorporated in New York.
In 1968, two days of tornado outbreaks began in 10 Midwestern and Southern states; twisters were blamed for 72 deaths, including 45 in Arkansas and 18 in Iowa.
In 1970, just after midnight, Phillip Lafayette Gibbs and James Earl Green, two black students at Jackson State College in Mississippi, were killed as police opened fire during student protests.
In 1972, Alabama Gov. George C. Wallace was shot and left paralyzed while campaigning for president in Laurel, Maryland, by Arthur H. Bremer, who served 35 years for attempted murder.
In 1975, U.S. forces invaded the Cambodian island of Koh Tang and captured the American merchant ship Mayaguez, which had been seized by the Khmer Rouge. (All 39 crew members had already been released safely by Cambodia; some 40 U.S. servicemen were killed in connection with the operation.)
In 1988, the Soviet Union began the process of withdrawing its troops from Afghanistan, more than eight years after Soviet forces entered the country.
In 2000, by a 5-4 vote, the U.S. Supreme Court threw out a key provision of the 1994 Violence Against Women Act, saying that rape victims could not sue their attackers in federal court.

Ten years ago: Jessica Watson, a 16-year-old Australian who’d spent seven months at sea in her pink yacht, became the youngest person to sail around the world solo, nonstop and unassisted as she arrived in Sydney.
Five years ago: A jury sentenced Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (joh-HAHR’ tsahr-NEYE’-ehv) to death for the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing that killed three and left more than 250 wounded. Elisabeth Bing, the Lamaze International co-founder who popularized what was known as natural childbirth and helped change how women and doctors approached the delivery room, died in New York at age 100.
One year ago: Alabama’s Republican governor, Kay Ivey, signed into law the most stringent abortion legislation in the nation, making performing an abortion a felony in nearly all cases. (The law remains blocked by court challenges.) President Donald Trump granted a full pardon to Conrad Black, a former newspaper publisher who had written a flattering political biography of Trump. (Black had been convicted of fraud in 2007 and spent more than three years in prison.) California fire officials said an investigation found that power lines owned by Pacific Gas & Electric Corp. had sparked a Northern California blaze that killed 85 people and nearly destroyed the town of Paradise in 2018; it was the deadliest U.S. wildfire in a century.

Good morning, Dean and LTG.
Morning, Tony. We've almost made it to the weekend.
I need to get some sleep. I just got out of my 3rd meeting and the next one is scheduled in ~30 minutes.

Good morning Daves, Dean, and BacktoBackTony. Two red lights this morning. Not the way a Friday should start.
-
The good news is that it appears the app has been fixed and we are ready to launch on Monday. The better news is that the CIO has been very cool about the delays. The best news would be if I get paid soon.

WTF? I'd turn around and try it again.
Good morning, Mark.

Is not "correctness" of belief by consensus? Would a person be martyred for a widely held belief? This Schnitzler fellow is a commie!

Good thing, too. Because dogs are happy with their dog food, they're not going to have armed protests because they can't go to Applebees.

Because his visit is completely out of pocket and doesn't involve the insurance companies. That's my guess.

Nice photos, Deano. Were you wearing a light on your head so that the boats knew you were there?

I' might be wrong, but I don't know that there's been any evidence that this can be spread via animals. I'm sure that's the reason.

FWIW, this is what the CDC has to say about it:
The virus that causes COVID-19 spreads mainly from person to person through respiratory droplets from coughing, sneezing, and talking. Recent studies show that people who are infected but do not have symptoms likely also play a role in the spread of COVID-19. At this time, there is no evidence that animals play a significant role in spreading the virus that causes COVID-19. Based on the limited information available to date, the risk of animals spreading COVID-19 to people is considered to be low.

They can catch it, and apparently, transfer it to other animals, based on something else I just read. The question is can they transmit it to humans? Seems like the answer is not likely, at least at this point in the research.

A four day timeline is not significant. Need three weeks for a detrimental effect to become known, and even that is a big maybe with the vaguery of testing and data compilation.

Especially since this can be dormant for up to 2 weeks before symptoms begin. But it should be fairly obvious that cases will increase as more people venture out. That's like predicting that if it's raining, more people will get wet if they leave the house.

Good thing, too. Because dogs are happy with their dog food, they're not going to have armed protests because they can't go to Applebees.
I just got out of quest diagnostics for routine blood work and antibody test. 2.5 hours and I almost got in a scuffle. I had to tell a guy he's too close and they are only 10 people allowed in waiting room. That's when he started dropping F bombs and told me to mind my own business. I said you are my business and to go outside like the rest of the other people.
I'm going shopping, bank, and get dog food.. Have a good day. See you all later.

What we'll be looking for is how the trends change once states open back up. But we'll need a couple weeks worth of data to get a complete picture of what re-opening has done as far as cases go.

You're assuming the testing protocols have been constant for the duration, which they have not. The trend data is flawed.

Well, you're right about that. If we'd had the testing available since the start, we'd have a more accurate picture of actual cases, since it's obviously much higher than we're currently able to identify.

Aside from the initial transmission from bat through pangolin, no, animals don't spread it except possibly by surface contact. (we don't have many pangolins around here).

Nothing really. None of these numbers mean much now because the whole thing was botched from the beginning. As we had little to no testing for most a month ago, we just have no idea what the onset was, penetration, infectivity profile. New people are being infected now, but we know that because we are actually doing some testing. In March the only people being tested were people in the hospital so obviously sick with it they shouldn't have been tested. Like giving a pregnancy test when the baby is crowning...

I said you are my business and to go outside like the rest of the other people.
I'm going shopping, bank, and get dog food.. Have a good day. See you all later.
I've encountered a bunch of idiots too. Start coughing and they'll usually back away.
You can't fix stupid. All while I'm protecting the whole waiting room they all just sat there. Get this, I saw an ahole at Wegmans spitting on a shopping cart out his truck window.

Enjoy that, my friend.

Yup. Figment and I are doing our part to support the local economy.
And of course Figment flirts with the servers so he gets a special treat.
If you were on top of your game you'd parlay those Figment flirts into special treats of your own. Dean can remind you how it's done.

Thank you Buddy. I hope you have a good weekend. A cold drink and a cigar can only help

here are the results of opening up here 4 days ago.
A four day timeline is not significant. Need three weeks for a detrimental effect to become known, and even that is a big maybe with the vaguery of testing and data compilation.
how 'bout since March 30th to present?
OK, but what's your point? More cases now vs March 30th? Isn't that true just about everywhere? What am I missing here?
Interesting that it's worst in Miami area.
Imagine it has to do with population density.

I'm sure that is a major factor. But I also know how stubborn the Cuban-Americans can be. Just sayin'.
