Today in History

Today is Thursday, Sept. 27, the 270th day of 2018. There are 95 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History:

On September 27, 1939, Warsaw, Poland, surrendered after weeks of resistance to invading forces from Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union during World War II.

On this date:

In 1825, the first locomotive to haul a passenger train was operated by George Stephenson in England.

In 1854, the first great disaster involving an Atlantic Ocean passenger vessel occurred when the steamship SS Arctic sank off Newfoundland; of the more than 400 people on board, only 86 survived.

In 1917, French sculptor and painter Edgar Degas died in Paris at age 83.

In 1928, the United States said it was recognizing the Nationalist Chinese government.

In 1942, Glenn Miller and his Orchestra performed together for the last time, at the Central Theater in Passaic, New Jersey, prior to Miller’s entry into the Army.

In 1962, “Silent Spring,” Rachel Carson’s study on the effects of pesticides on the environment, was published in book form by Houghton Mifflin.

In 1964, the government publicly released the report of the Warren Commission, which concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald had acted alone in assassinating President John F. Kennedy.

In 1979, Congress gave its final approval to forming the U.S. Department of Education.

In 1991, President George H.W. Bush announced in a nationally broadcast address that he was eliminating all U.S. battlefield nuclear weapons, and called on the Soviet Union to match the gesture. The Senate Judiciary Committee deadlocked, 7-7, on the nomination of Clarence Thomas to the U.S. Supreme Court.

In 1994, more than 350 Republican congressional candidates gathered on the steps of the U.S. Capitol to sign the “Contract with America,” a 10-point platform they pledged to enact if voters sent a GOP majority to the House.

In 1996, in Afghanistan, the Taliban, a band of former seminary students, drove the government of President Burhanuddin Rabbani out of Kabul, captured the capital and executed former leader Najibullah.

In 2004, NBC announced that “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno would be succeeded by “Late Night” host Conan O’Brien in 2009. (O’Brien’s stint on “The Tonight Show” lasted just over seven months.)

Ten years ago: China marked its first spacewalk as astronaut Zhai Zhigang (zheye zhu-dawng) floated outside the Shenzhou 7 for 13 minutes.

Five years ago: President Barack Obama and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani spoke by telephone, the first conversation between American and Iranian leaders in more than 30 years. The U.N. Security Council voted unanimously to secure and destroy Syria’s chemical weapons stockpile.

One year ago: President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans unveiled the first major revamp of the nation’s tax code in a generation, a plan that included deep tax cuts for corporations, simplified tax brackets and a near-doubling of the standard deduction. Maria regained strength and became a hurricane again, pushing water over both sides of North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Playboy founder Hugh Hefner died at the age of 91.

Ten years ago: Afghan opposition forces broke through Taliban lines outside Kabul. Fashion editor Carrie Donovan died in New York at age 73.

Five years ago: Hundreds of relatives and friends of victims who died in the crash of American Airlines Flight 587 dedicated a much-awaited memorial in New York. Gerald R. Ford surpassed Ronald Reagan as the longest-living U.S. president at 93 years and 121 days.

One year ago: President Barack Obama arrived in Japan from South Korea to attend a regional economic summit; it was the fourth and final stop on the president’s 10-day tour of Asia. An old Chinese vase that had been tucked away unnoticed for years in a suburban London home was sold at auction for a record $83 million, scooped up by a Chinese buyer.
Gerald Ford died in 2006.  And B.O. was not president one year ago.  #fakenews.

Quotes for Texans:

Winter is nature's way of saying, "Up yours."

I have come to regard November as the older, harder man's October. I appreciate the early darkness and cooler temperatures. It puts my mind in a different place than October. It is a month for a quieter, slightly more subdued celebration of summer's death as winter tightens its grip. Henry Rollins

Now is the winter of our discontent. William Shakespeare

People don't notice whether it's winter or summer when they're happy. Anton Chekhov

There are only two seasons - winter and Baseball. Bill Veeck

All the talking news heads complain about college football schedules....outside of conference games, if people realized how long it takes to schedule a decent team.....Clemson just announced scheduling of Georgia for 2019 and 2020 games.  Who knows if either or both will still be decent then.  Were able to schedule LSU for 2025-2026.   ::)

Speaking of flip, the Place has 86% Off Gurkha Big-Ring Bedlam Sampler, with a free cutter and shipping thrown in to sweeten the pot.  Wow, what a deal!

Just not a lot of fun watching someone like Alabama beat Bootleg State University 70-0. IMFO, of course.

Yea, but the hens have Flip on the smoking wagon, so even Gurkha's are out of his reach.

True, it just a lot easier to schedule the revinue grabbers than a competitive team.

Just polished off a delicious bacon/cheddar/chicken sandwich with fresh lettuce and tomato.  Scarfed it down at my desk to be ahead of a 1 pm conference call only to have it cancelled.  Bastiges.

heading off to Ocala truck shopping to see who out of the top 3, Chevy, Ford, Dodge will make the best deal.
Wait now....how long ago did you buy this one?   You gonna get new this time?
looking at brand new, 2018 zero miles under $32,000, so far it looks like Ford. everything I want good price on my trade in and down payment, just have to pull a black one out from another dealer.

If you're drinking this evening, feel free to pour some out for my great aunt, my grandma's sister. She fell outside at some point yesterday and was found by a neighbor in her driveway. Had bleeding on the brain and never regained consciousness. Passed at 2 this morning.
sorry to hear that. what a terrible way to go.
Yeah, it's definitely top 10 in my list of ways I'd not want to go.
Apparently that is not in the top 10.  Just sayin'.

Don't worry, I haven't seen half those movies, and none of the 2018 ones.  But it is cool how he has the Hitchcockian cameo in each.
