Today is Thursday, Jan. 4, the fourth day of 2018. There are 361 days left in the year.
Today's Highlight in History:
On Jan. 4, 1868, "The Moonstone" by Wilkie Collins, considered by some the first full-length English detective novel, began to be serialized in Britain and the U.S. in All the Year Round and Harper's Weekly (it was published in book form in July 1868).
On this date:
In 1717, France, Britain and Holland formed a Triple Alliance against Spain.
In 1896, Utah was admitted as the 45th state.
In 1904, the U.S. Supreme Court, in Gonzalez v. Williams, ruled that Puerto Ricans were not aliens and could enter the United States freely; however, the court stopped short of declaring them citizens. (Puerto Ricans received U.S. citizenship in March 1917.)
In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, in his State of the Union address, called for legislation to provide assistance for the jobless, elderly, impoverished children and the handicapped.
In 1943, for the second time, Soviet dictator Josef Stalin made the cover of TIME as the magazine's 1942 "Man of the Year."
In 1951, during the Korean War, North Korean and Communist Chinese forces recaptured the city of Seoul (sohl).
In 1960, author and philosopher Albert Camus (al-BEHR' kah-MOO') died in an automobile accident in Villeblevin, France, at age 46.
In 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson delivered his State of the Union address in which he outlined the goals of his "Great Society."
In 1967, "The Doors," the self-titled debut album of the rock group featuring the song "Light My Fire," was released by Elektra Records.
In 1974, President Richard Nixon refused to hand over tape recordings and documents subpoenaed by the Senate Watergate Committee.
In 1987, 16 people were killed when an Amtrak train bound from Washington, D.C., to Boston collided with Conrail locomotives that had crossed into its path from a side track in Chase, Maryland.
In 1995, the 104th Congress convened, the first entirely under Republican control since the Eisenhower era.

Morning Dave and Dean.
good morning Dave.

Ten years ago: The government reported that the nation's jobless rate hit 5 percent in December 2007, a two-year high, fanning recession fears. Britney Spears lost custody of her two sons to ex-husband Kevin Federline a day after police and paramedics were called to her home.
Five years ago: The new Congress passed a $9.7 billion bill to help pay flood insurance claims to homeowners, renters and businesses damaged by Superstorm Sandy. No. 10 Texas A&M beat No. 12 Oklahoma, 41-13, in the Cotton Bowl.
One year ago: President Barack Obama urged congressional Democrats to "look out for the American people" in defending his legacy health care overhaul, while Vice President-elect Mike Pence stood firm in telling Republicans that dismantling "Obamacare" was No. 1 on Donald Trump's list. Macy's said it was eliminating more than 10,000 jobs and planned to move forward with 68 store closures after a disappointing holiday shopping season.

Happy Bombogenesis Day!

Telecommute day here. Not much snow on the ground but the threat has shut everything down. Good morning, men.

High of 13 today (which we've already hit), 5 tomorrow and 7 on Saturday. I've had just about enough of this cold bullshit.

It's 25° here now but feels like 11° because of the wind. We're expecting 4-8 inches today plus gusts up to 40+ mph. With all that said, I'm ready for the Spring too.

Looking forward to the warm front next week...(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180104/354506bd3568b47759554777ee670ab5.jpg)

And if this Nor'easter isn't enough, there will be a reinforcement of the cold following behind it. Lows in the lower single digits expected for Friday and Saturday.

Plenty of work to keep me entertained also. Gotta close out 3 of my projects and on-board 3 new ones. Mucho paperwork.

Cold weather rarely destroys entire towns, so I'll take that over hurricanes any day.

I have a theory about people who either go to work from home full time, or retire (ie stop spending consistent time around a larger number of people). Remind me to tell you about it the next time I see you at CF. :D

I'm not at all on the edge of my seat. I have the same reclusive theory on people who stay home too much. It's a slippery slope.

Hello Bret. Feel anything trembling this morning?

My pulse rate at how the market is doing. Otherwise, no. Was there an earthquake or something out here that I missed?

Apparently not.
Madame St. Helens is 48 miles south of the office, which is 54 miles southwest of my house. So no, didn't feel it. We didn't notice when it blew its head off in 1980, either.
There was a 4.4 in SFO this morning too. I'm hoping the big one is coming soon and California gets flushed.

Unless it's a load-bearing state, and the rest of the US is what ends up getting flushed. :)

It's our own little Soviet Republic.
Friend of mine was sitting in a hotel lobby last night, browsing a Facebook group I run for shooting enthusiasts. Night manager comes over and tells him people had reported he was looking at guns on his computer. My friend explained. Manager asked him to stop doing it in the lobby. Friend says, "You understand my employer has spent half a million dollars on this hotel past twelve months, and that I make the decision which hotel we use?" Manager apologized, but insisted. So my friend sent the memo they were changing hotels.
Dumbass state full of dumbass people.

Probably would have been okay if he'd done that. People would have assumed he was just a wannabe actor.
As it was, he was sitting quietly. Guess that scared people.

Better warn him not to be cigar shopping in that lobby on his laptop, that will surely offend someone as well.

Gotta figure the manager was probably just playing the numbers on that one. In CA, there are probably people who spend more than that who didn't like what he was doing.

Was he standing on his chair with the laptop screen facing away from him, screaming, "say hello to my little friend... rattattattattat" ???
We would need more context...
Why? I just assumed that was what happened.

Some minor earthquakes around Mt. St. Helens...wonder if it woke Raz up?
Apparently not.
Madame St. Helens is 48 miles south of the office, which is 54 miles southwest of my house. So no, didn't feel it. We didn't notice when it blew its head off in 1980, either.
There was a 4.4 in SFO this morning too. I'm hoping the big one is coming soon and California gets flushed.
Unless it's a load-bearing state, and the rest of the US is what ends up getting flushed. :)
That state has been circling the drain for years and recently pulled the handle again.
Gotta figure the manager was probably just playing the numbers on that one. In CA, there are probably people who spend more than that who didn't like what he was doing.
May be. Regardless, Swissair is not an account I would be nonchalant about losing.

Those Iguanas Falling From Trees in Florida? They Probably Aren’t Dead.
Beware the falling iguanas in South Florida.
When temperatures dip into the 30s and 40s, people from West Palm Beach to Miami know to be on the lookout for reptiles stunned — but not necessarily killed — by the cold. They can come back to life again in the warmth.
In Boca Raton, Frank Cerabino, a Palm Beach Post columnist familiar with the critters, stepped outside and saw a bright green specimen by his pool on Thursday morning, feet up.
“It’s one of those ethical things: What do you do?” he said in an interview.
Iguanas, which can be as long as six feet, are not native to South Florida. They have proliferated in the subtropical heat, causing headaches for wildlife managers — and occasionally popping up in toilets. It took a prolonged cold spell to significantly reduce their population in 2010. (The same cold snap also resulted in the deaths of many invasive Burmese pythons.)
On Thursday, Mr. Cerabino poked at the animal with his pool skimmer, hoping to wake it up. In a previous backyard encounter with a paralyzed iguana, he said, picking it up with a shovel did the trick.
But no luck this time.
“He didn’t move,” Mr. Cerabino said. “But he’s probably still alive. My experience is that they take a while to die.”
So he opted for leaving the iguana where it was, “and dealing with it when I come home.”
“He’ll either get enough sun where he’ll revive himself and get himself up the tree, or he’ll continue to freeze and turn dark brown — almost black — and I’ll know he’s dead,” Mr. Cerabino said.

Not to bad actually. They have the same problem in Puerto Rico. Allowed to kill them at will. Worst thing is they don't climb down from trees well, so usually just drop. Not good when they land on a car.

Interesting. Can't we eat it instead?
like Crocodile Dundee?

I wouldn't want to clean it but I would definitely try eating it.
Speaking of interesting menu's, I enjoy the Lambertville Station's winter game menu.
