At least Joe got a deal up today, even if it IS "no longer available".

Today is Monday, Aug. 7, the 219th day of 2017. There are 146 days left in the year.
Today's Highlight in History:
On August 7, 1942, U.S. and other allied forces landed at Guadalcanal, marking the start of the first major allied offensive in the Pacific during World War II. (Japanese forces abandoned the island the following February.)
On this date:
In 1782, Gen. George Washington created the Order of the Purple Heart, a decoration to recognize merit in enlisted men and noncommissioned officers.
In 1789, the U.S. Department of War was established by Congress.
In 1882, the famous feud between the Hatfields of West Virginia and the McCoys of Kentucky erupted into full-scale violence.
In 1927, the already opened Peace Bridge connecting Buffalo, New York, and Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada, was officially dedicated.
In 1947, the balsa wood raft Kon-Tiki, which carried a six-man crew 4,300 miles across the Pacific Ocean, crashed into a reef in a Polynesian archipelago; all six crew members reached land safely.
In 1957, Oliver Hardy (the heavier half of the Laurel and Hardy comedy team) died in North Hollywood, California, at age 65.
In 1959, the United States launched the Explorer 6 satellite, which sent back images of Earth.
In 1964, Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin resolution, giving President Lyndon B. Johnson broad powers in dealing with reported North Vietnamese attacks on U.S. forces.
In 1974, French stuntman Philippe Petit (fee-LEEP' peh-TEET') repeatedly walked a tightrope strung between the twin towers of New York's World Trade Center.
In 1989, a plane carrying U.S. Rep. Mickey Leland, D-Texas, and 14 others disappeared over Ethiopia. (The wreckage of the plane was found six days later; there were no survivors.)
In 1998, terrorist bombs at U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania killed 224 people, including 12 Americans.
In 2010, Elena Kagan was sworn in as the 112th justice and fourth woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Ten years ago: San Francisco's Barry Bonds hit home run No. 756 to break Hank Aaron's storied record with one out in the fifth inning of a game against the Washington Nationals, who ended up winning, 8-6.
Five years ago: Jared Lee Loughner agreed to spend the rest of his life in prison, accepting that he went on a deadly shooting rampage at an Arizona political gathering in 2011 and sparing the victims a lengthy, possibly traumatic death-penalty trial. Syrian President Bashar Assad made his first appearance on state TV in nearly three weeks. Aly Raisman became the first U.S. woman to win Olympic gold on floor, and picked up a bronze on balance beam on the final day of the gymnastics competition at the London Games. Movie critic Judith Crist, 90, died in New York.
One year ago: An accident on a 17-story waterslide at Schlitterbahn Waterpark in Kansas City, Kansas, claimed the life of a 10-year-old boy. Jim Furyk became the first golfer to shoot a 58 in PGA Tour history during the Travelers Championship in Connecticut with a 12-under 58 in the final round. (Furyk finished tied for fifth at 11 under, three strokes behind winner Russell Knox.) Ichiro Suzuki tripled off the wall for his 3,000th hit in the major leagues, becoming the 30th player to reach the milestone as the Miami Marlins beat the Colorado Rockies 10-7. At the Rio Games, British swimmer Adam Peaty cruised to victory in the 100-meter breaststroke with a world record time of 57.13 seconds. Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom also turned in a world-record performance in the 100 butterfly, touching in 55.48. Katie Ledecky of the U.S. crushed her own world record in the 400 freestyle with a time of 3:56.46.

Thought for Today: "Happiness, it seems to me, consists of two things: first, in being where you belong, and second - and best - in comfortably going through everyday life, that is, having had a good night's sleep and not being hurt by new shoes." - Theodor Fontane, German author (1819-1898).

Good morning, boys.

It's National Lighthouse Day!
-
Another retirement adjustment to adapt to, I am not used to still being home when the warden gets up, for years I have woken her up on my way out the door.
Another reason to go fishing I guess but got to get moved first.
-
It's National Lighthouse Day!
Did not know that but I am a big fan of lighthouses, I have seen quite a few but would like to see a lot more. I have seen most of them on the Gulf Coast and a few on the southern Atlantic, also a few in the Caribbean.
-
It's National Lighthouse Day!
I'll have to find one today.

Here are just a few fun Lighthouse facts:
THE FIRST LIGHTHOUSE IN AMERICA was at Boston on Little Brewster Island (1716). The first keeper was George Worthylake who was drowned, along with his wife and daughter, when returning to the island in 1718. The original tower was destroyed by the British and eventually reconstructed in 1784.
NEWEST SHORESIDE LIGHTHOUSE is Sullivan’s Island in Charleston, SC, 1962.
and
THE ONLY TRIANGULAR-SHAPED LIGHTHOUSE TOWER is Sullivan’s Island in Charleston, SC.
and
THE ONLY LIGHTHOUSE EQUIPPED WITH AN ELEVATOR is Sullivan’s Island in Charleston, SC.
THE TALLEST LIGHTHOUSE is Cape Hatteras, NC (196 ft. built in 1872).
FIRST AMERICAN-BUILT WEST COAST LIGHTHOUSE was Alcatraz Island, 1854.
State with the most lighthouses - Michigan with 124. (Depending on definitions, the number may be about 130.)
THE OLDEST EXISTING LIGHTHOUSE IN AMERICA (never rebuilt) is Sandy Hook, NJ (1764), which is still in operation. Part of the building of the lighthouse was paid for by the sale of lottery tickets and shipping interest in New York City paid for the rest.

I told you, start enjoying those morning cigars outside.
Also important to remember...soon you are going to be around each other 24/7. Need to adjust to THAT!

This is truly bi-partisan humor, guess Caitlin Jenner could be considered justifiably "mixed up in the head". I mean really, what a Fuk'n story, even though most likely planned out as a publicity stunt.

Just a couple more lighthouse facts:
There are 48 lighthouses in California.
Three lighthouses in Alabama.
21 in Connecticut.
14 in Louisiana.
NJ has 24.
24 also in Ohio.
The Halfmoon Reef lighthouse in Port Lavaca Texas was originally a screwpile lighthouse (elevated building sitting on piles) but has now been moved ashore.
Texas has 7 lighthouses.

Morning Daves, Dean, and Mr. Mayor. Still light rain here, bulk of it is pounding San Antonio area now. Sure glad I'm not trying to fly anywhere today.
-
Dean, you visit the Lauderdale Lady this weekend, or is that the weekend coming up?
Sunday the 20th after I return from Eastpoint with the redhead. Probably leave around 6am that Sunday, arrive near 9am, have some breakfast I hope, and see where the day takes us. Hoping on heading back Monday.
-
It's Jacksonville, Lauderdale is next year, then Miami the year after.

Had to look. Showing 1 hr delay now, so they'll miss the connection in CLT. There's weather out east also, though, so who knows.

according to the morning news here there are five now. $700,000 in county money. Talking about cost comparison of filling, or joining hole with lake close by. I foresee the existing lake emptying to fill the other void. LOL.

Dentist time :(
Just install permanent crowns (that I now know are not really permanent since this all tarted with a failing crown). Dentist said crowns usually last about 20 years.

It's not like they don't know exactly where the incoming plane is....
...and if flight time is an hour and a half and they haven't taken off yet....not likely there will only be an hour delay.

Probably so since it is exactly backwards from reality which is how airlines operate.

Thought I got all the states, but need to include SC, don't I?
Lighthouses survive at eight historic light stations in the state. Developers have restored two of the historic towers and also built several facsimile lighthouses. There is no statewide preservation group, and for the past two decades preservation efforts have been focused on the critically endangered Morris Island Light. Several other lighthouses need attention, including Georgetown, Hunting Island, and especially Cape Romain.
The Coast Guard continues to operate lights at only two of them, Georgetown and Sullivan's Island.
Sullivan's Island light is also quite possibly the strangest looking.

Morning Mr. Bean.

Yep, about a 1.5 hrs late. What becomes of them once they arrive CLT remains to be seen.

Yea, and on those days when you're not really paying attention....sitting there reading or bantering on your phone, then you realize you should be boarding, look up and see another destination at your gate...

The Coast Guard continues to operate lights at only two of them, Georgetown and Sullivan's Island.
Sullivan's Island light is also quite possibly the strangest looking.
Lighthouse Inspection and Maintenance Manager. Sounds like the perfect retirement job for SoonToBeSCDave.

I don't think Nevada, or Utah have many lighthouses.....
good morning boys.

I'm going to be scarce around here for about a week(I mean, I'm here more than Bad Dad, but nowhere as
much as Dean or Tex!), just got a call from my brother, that Mom passed away this morning. Nadine Gabby & I went out
on Friday evening, and Gabby & I were there again on Saturday. Nadine was going to drive out again today, and may still go. so fact checking will be turned over to LTG for the duration. I am going to finish out the day at work, save time off for wake and Funeral.

I agree, it was the homes build in conjunction (or as part of ) the lighthouse that really makes them special. That's the case with the other lights I mentioned.

Just a couple more lighthouse facts.... (because Mr. Bean wanted more!)
THE LIGHTHOUSE SERVICE WAS CREATED IN 1789 by the 9th Act of the first Congress. Over the years, lighthouses were placed under the direction of the Department of Revenue (this department was disbanded in 1820), Treasury (until 1903), Commerce, and Transportation. The Lighthouse Board (of the U. S. Lighthouse Establishment) held sway from 1852 to July 1, 1910 when Commerce created the Bureau of Lighthouses. The Coast Guard took over on July 7, 1939. The Lighthouse Board divided the country into Districts in 1852: there were originally 8 and then eventually 19. Today the Coast Guard only has 10 districts.
THE FIRST AMERICAN LIGHTHOUSE TO USE ELECTRICITY was the Statue of Liberty in 1886.
The most powerfull lighthouse in the Western Hemisphere is the Sullivan Island Light in Charleston, SC. It originally had 28 million candelas (candlepower) but the light was actually too dazzling and the power was lowered to 1.2 million candelas. It could still be seen over 26 nautical miles (48 km; 30 mi)
Now, your lighthouse quiz question for the day (no peeking)

Long time no post. Spent the week in Minneapolis with son Tim and family. Son Colin was able to get time off and was able to join us. Tim is assigned to the Army ROTC program at University of Minnesota. Took in a Twins game. Turned out to have a touch of drama. The Big Sexy, Colon, pitched a complete game. Oh, and Choo was on first. Excellent post game fireworks. Really nice having the whole family together.

As you'll be up early and cooking the warden breakfast every morning in SC these will make for a nice place setting. Time to get domestic. You'll be needing one of these also.

10-25 gunshots. Guess they wanted to make sure they got him this time.

Good to hear CB, Great weekend!

That's quite a range. Fired 25, hit him with 10? That's what happens when you hold your pistol sideways.

Indeed. Glad to hear Tim has a stateside assignment which sounds long term, at least by Army standards.

Love the lighthouse apron. Good to see Mike on here too. Cut out a little early (really on time, not early) because of daughter#1's birthday.

I did the best I could with the yard over the weekend. Tonight I will make Martina's favorite dinner and tomorrow I'll go car shopping. Or at least, that's the plan.

That plan is insignificant, what is the wardens plan?
