Today is Wednesday, April 12, the 102nd day of 2017. There are 263 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On April 12, 1945, President Franklin D. Roosevelt died of a cerebral hemorrhage in Warm Springs, Georgia, at age 63; he was succeeded by Vice President Harry S. Truman.

On this date:

In 1606, England's King James I decreed the design of the original Union Flag, which combined the flags of England and Scotland.

In 1776, North Carolina's Fourth Provincial Congress authorized the colony's delegates to the Continental Congress to support independence from Britain.

In 1861, the American Civil War began as Confederate forces opened fire on Fort Sumter in South Carolina.

In 1934, "Tender Is the Night," by F. Scott Fitzgerald, was first published in book form after being serialized in Scribner's Magazine.

In 1955, the Salk vaccine against polio was declared safe and effective.

In 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first man to fly in space, orbiting the earth once before making a safe landing.

In 1963, civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. was arrested and jailed in Birmingham, Alabama, charged with contempt of court and parading without a permit. (During his time behind bars, King wrote his "Letter from Birmingham Jail.")

In 1975, singer, dancer and civil rights activist Josephine Baker, 68, died in Paris.

In 1981, the space shuttle Columbia blasted off from Cape Canaveral on its first test flight. Former world heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis, 66, died in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In 1985, Sen. Jake Garn, R-Utah, became the first sitting member of Congress to fly in space as the shuttle Discovery lifted off.

In 1990, in its first meeting, East Germany's first democratically elected parliament acknowledged responsibility for the Nazi Holocaust, and asked the forgiveness of Jews and others who had suffered.

In 1992, after five years in the making, Euro Disneyland (now called Disneyland Paris) opened in Marne-La-Vallee, France, amid controversy as French intellectuals bemoaned the invasion of American pop culture.

Ten years ago: A suicide bomber breached security in Iraq's parliament and blew himself up in the dining hall; a Sunni parliament member was killed. CBS fired Don Imus from his radio program for insulting the Rutgers women's basketball team on the air; in the evening, Imus met with team members at the New Jersey governor's mansion in Princeton (Gov. Jon S. Corzine (KOHR'-zyn), who was en route to that meeting, was seriously injured when his official vehicle crashed).

Five years ago: Jury selection began in Greensboro, North Carolina, for the corruption trial of former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, charged with six counts of campaign finance fraud. (The jury ended up acquitting Edwards of accepting illegal campaign contributions while deadlocking on the other five counts; federal prosecutors later dropped the remaining charges.)

One year ago: Navy Secretary Ray Mabus (MAY'-buhs) told 1,500 Marines and sailors at Camp Pendleton, California, that the Pentagon's decision to let women compete for all military combat positions was as irreversible as earlier edicts to integrate blacks and allow gays and lesbians to openly serve. A man convicted of killing his neighbor during a burglary in 1996 became the fourth person put to death in Georgia in 2016. Al-Jazeera America, which failed in its attempt to establish another TV news network, signed off after more than 2 1/2 years on the air. Actress Anne Jackson, who often appeared onstage with her husband, Eli Wallach, in comedies and classics, died in New York at age 90. David Gest, a music producer and Liza Minnelli's former husband, died in London at 62.

Last inspection and no big deal but still got to replace roof and pool heater.  Roof is scheduled for April 24th and like anything "pool" that heater is being a pain in the ass.  Good news is insurance company came through with about $10k more for the roof which will almost cover me.

Roof on the 24th and closing on the 27th? You hardly get to enjoy the new roof.
Edit: It's like me changing the tires on my lease right before I have to return it.

Closing on the 28th but we are in the middle of high probability hail season so waiting until the last minute.  I find no pleasure in a new roof as long as the old one is not leaking and it is not.  Previous owner did the same thing for the same reason when I bought it on April 21 11 years ago.

Alright, got 8 and 8:08 tee times. Earliest they do times for, since that's when he says they open. Should be enough time to golf, then they can get back and clean up before the fest.
Yea, need to shower, shave and put on the good cologne before venturing into the smoke cloud.
I was wondering the same. It's not like they'll be working up a sweat.
I hear these guys take a lot of swings and not a single one of them is making the cover of Men's Fitness anytime soon

How far a drive is the course? 8:00 sounds a bit early, I may have to curb my drinking Thursday night...or just play hung over like I always do
It's only 15 minutes from the house, just back up the next exit on 80. I can make it later if you want, just trying to make sure the other guys get back in time to get their duffel bags full of shit.
Tee times are good

Nothing to do with sleep, the golf course maintenance is a bit different along with the opening times. Dew is a bit different in the Poconos compared to the occasional morning in FL

United Airlines told federal regulators in 2014 all ticketed passengers were guaranteed seats on flights, International Business Times reports.

United in comments to federal officials in 2014 said every ticket "guarantees a passenger a seat on the plane, with no additional mandatory seat-assignment charges."

"Importantly, every passenger who buys a ticket on a United flight or a flight on any of United's partners or competitors in the United States will be assigned a seat at no additional charge (though in some cases this will still happen at the gate)," the airline wrote.

"Therefore, the rule does not need to prescribe how carriers must disclose charges concerning advance seat assignments because passengers need not purchase this service to receive a seat assignment."

I flew on United last year, and on our way home, they were overbooked and were offering big bucks in travel vouchers for people to switch to another flight. I haven't read much on this story, but did that not happen here? If not, I wonder why.

That's not quite right either.  They were up to $800, but has NO takers.  They then picked four to bump based on their magic formula and removed three.  The fourth refused....and thus our story and video.

That makes a bit more sense. But seriously, a couple hundred extra dollars and they're not in this situation. Which was later compounded by the CEO's "apology".

Basically they were being Dicks as always and this time they shit the bed.  They were not overbooked they took paying passengers with boarding passes off to put United employees on the plane because the flight crew employees can live whereever they want to and fly back and forth to work free.  Neighbor is an international pilot and he flies back up here every Thursday and flies back to Houston on Sunday evening to fly his Monday a.m. Flight to China.

If not, I wonder why.
they got up to $800 and had 3 takers, others were holding out for $1000 and the free flight, but someone at united thought he/she would save the company $200.  Stock is only down 45 million, good effing choice.....
No doubt about it...shit and then re-shit the bed for sure.

Not too bad. Definitely worth the $$. Construction seems great. The first inch or so gave me a very dry mouth feeling, which I'm not fond of. It's better now. Overall, it has a light white pepper taste. Some woodsy flavors and then in the 2nd half I got a bunch of dried fruit notes.

It went really well but I'm not that interested in doing business resiliency/DR work. I like the UN offer better.
