It's been raining like heck here since yesterday afternoon. I'm assuming the situation is not the same for LTG and he was able to squeeze in a round of golf this morning.

In a strange way, I almost want to put these in my cart. I've never been a 5 Vegas fan but I have to admit the ones that I've smoked were impeccably constructed.

The Series 'A' Archetype restarted it all for me. Fifteen years ago, I was talking to the chef of our work cafeteria and told him I used to really be into cigars and just stopped smoking for no good reason. He handed me one of these and told me it was one of his new favorites...

Needless to say, having not smoked in years, that cigar sat me down and turned me a bit green. A fellow colleague and brother of the leaf, saw me "sitting" in the parking lot and approached me. He asked why I was smoking that CI crap? I didn't know what CI was. He advised me to eat some of my lunch and I'd feel better in no time. He lit a cigar and joined me. The lunch and enthralling conversation got me through that cigar. Not sure I ever picked up another 5 Vegas A after that. Although eventually, I would smoke plenty of the AAA made by AJ...

That colleague reached into his portable humidor and handed me about 5-6 cigars to try. The Griffin's is the only one I can recall and maybe an Onyx. Shortly thereafter, I logged into CI and joined the banter there to learn more and get back acquainted with this hobby. That colleague is Charlie and I consider him a great friend now...

A few years after that, I created this site because it appeared that Cigars Intl might drop their banter and I was afraid I'd lose all the great connections I had made. I've lost many of them anyway over the years but it wasn't from lack of trying. It's been 7 years already and one can trace it all back to today's CI offering. If you're still with me, thanks for being part of this. I'll continue doing it while there is continued interest. Happy bantering.

Today is Friday, July 9, the 190th day of 2021.
There are 175 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History:

On July 9, 2004, a Senate Intelligence Committee report concluded the CIA had provided unfounded assessments of the threat posed by Iraq that the Bush administration had relied on to justify going to war.

On this date:

In 1540, England’s King Henry VIII had his 6-month-old marriage to his fourth wife, Anne of Cleves, annulled.

In 1776, the Declaration of Independence was read aloud to Gen. George Washington’s troops in New York.

In 1918, 101 people were killed in a train collision in Nashville, Tennessee. The Distinguished Service Cross was established by an Act of Congress.

In 1937, a fire at 20th Century Fox’s film storage facility in Little Ferry, New Jersey, destroyed most of the studio’s silent films.

In 1943, during World War II, the Allies launched Operation Husky, the invasion of Sicily.

In 1944, during World War II, American forces secured Saipan as the last Japanese defenses fell.

In 1947, the engagement of Britain’s Princess Elizabeth to Lt. Philip Mountbatten was announced.

In 1982, Pan Am Flight 759, a Boeing 727, crashed in Kenner, Louisiana, shortly after takeoff from New Orleans International Airport, killing all 145 people aboard and eight people on the ground.

In 1992, Democrat Bill Clinton tapped Tennessee Sen. Al Gore to be his running mate. Former CBS News commentator Eric Sevareid died in Washington at age 79.

In 1999, A jury in Los Angeles ordered General Motors Corp. to pay $4.9 billion to six people severely burned when their Chevrolet Malibu exploded in flames in a rear-end collision. (A judge later reduced the punitive damages to $1.09 billion, while letting stand $107 million in compensatory damages; GM settled the lawsuit in July 2003 for an undisclosed amount.)

In 2010, the largest U.S.-Russia spy swap since the Cold War was completed on a remote stretch of Vienna airport tarmac as planes from New York and Moscow arrived within minutes of each other with 10 Russian sleeper agents and four prisoners accused by Russia of spying for the West.

In 2015, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley relegated the Confederate flag to the state’s “relic room” after the legislature passed a measure removing the flag from the grounds of the Statehouse in the wake of the slaughter of nine African-Americans at a church Bible study.

Ten years ago: South Sudan became the world’s newest nation, officially breaking away from Sudan after two civil wars over five decades that had cost millions of lives. Derek Jeter homered for his 3,000th hit, making him the first player to reach the mark with the New York Yankees, who defeated the Tampa Bay Rays, 5-4.

Five years ago: President Barack Obama wrapped up his visit to the NATO summit in Warsaw before heading to Madrid for a visit cut short because of violence back home, where five Dallas police officers had been killed by a sniper and two Black men were dead after being shot by police. Serena Williams won her record-tying 22nd Grand Slam title by beating Angelique Kerber 7-5, 6-3 in the Wimbledon final and pulling even with Steffi Graf for the most major championships in the Open era, which began in 1968.

One year ago: The World Health Organization acknowledged the possibility that COVID-19 might be spread in the air under certain conditions; more than 200 scientists, in an open letter, had urged the agency to do so. The head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Robert Redfield, said federal health officials would not revise their coronavirus guidelines for reopening schools, despite criticism from President Donald Trump. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio used a roller to help paint “Black Lives Matter” in front of Trump’s namesake Manhattan tower. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of a New York prosecutor’s demands for Trump’s tax records.

JoeCigar:

5 Vegas Series 'A' Archetype (Toro   6.0"x50) - 10 / $29.99
Very nice summary Tony.   You should put that together and make a history or archive section for proper preservation.
Indeed, nice to hear how it all started.

Afternoon, all. Did indeed get a round in this morning. Overcast all day so far, but no rain to speak of.

Only 7?  Hmm. Yeah...I guess that's right.  Lessee...it was late 2012 when my friend Mark gave up cigars and gave me his humidor and gear, which was when I started spending more time on CI and paying attention to the CI banter.  It was February 2013 when my friend Tim gave me the big humidor.  And it was November 2014 when I broke my leg, and CigarBanter was still new then.

So...7 years of ups, downs and sidewayses.  Kind of a bummer that we've lost some.  But I'm not going anywhere until you turn the lights off, and if that ever looms as a possibility, I'll offer to take it over.  This place has become a habit. Cheers.

Very nice summary Tony.   You should put that together and make a history or archive section for proper preservation.
Indeed, nice to hear how it all started.

Afternoon, all. Did indeed get a round in this morning. Overcast all day so far, but no rain to speak of.
Didn't quite get into how "A Friend of Charlie" was born and "A Friend of Tony" never materialized.
Cause all he does is take, take, take.

JoeCigar:

5 Vegas Series 'A' Archetype (Toro   6.0"x50) - 10 / $29.99
In a strange way, I almost want to put these in my cart. I've never been a 5 Vegas fan but I have to admit the ones that I've smoked were impeccably constructed.
The Series 'A' Archetype restarted it all for me. Fifteen years ago, I was talking to the chef of our work cafeteria and told him I used to really be into cigars and just stopped smoking for no good reason. He handed me one of these and told me it was one of his new favorites...

It's related. I'll leave it for tomorrow's banter though.

Well, I have to take that box to FedEx, and now I have some other errands to run.  So I guess I'll get dressed after all.  I'll check in later.
Yeah, had to get dressed myself after work and attend a wake. My buddy's dad was only 76 but broke his neck 8 months ago and passed away on the 4th. RIP Artie!

That's a damn shame. And still too early to go these days.

Oh absolutely. You would have never known he was 76. He looked younger than me. His quality of life wasn't very good since the accident though.

By the way, the accident... His youngest son fell off an undersized latter he was holding while cleaning the gutters and landed on him. Not sure how my buddy's brother is gonna live with himself now.

Oh my lord, that's tragic. You're right, I can't imagine living with myself in the same scenario.
