new carburetor is in and being attached as I post, he has a new muffler he's going to put on at no extra charge. I should be mowing by the afternoon. total cost: $100 for mower, $250 parts and labor. still better than investing in brand new.

Leaning against this particular one at the moment.  The lower parcel is has wetland plants on it, which could mean it is unbuildable. That would diminish my enthusiasm.
