And how was your weekend, Dave?
Saturday was interesting. We were still having electrical issues that started with the dryer not working. What started happening was when the furnace or the dryer was running, everything would flicker off for a second, then usually kick back on. Well, it did it again Saturday morning, only this time, only half of the stuff came back on. Got an electrician out, turns out the issue all along was a contact in the electric meter wasn't connected properly, so it would sometimes have trouble making the connection, causing the flickering. He said he couldn't believe we'd made it this long without having any issues. New meter was put in a couple years ago, if I remember correctly. So now all of our electrical problems should be solved. Which likely also solves the question of how we could have the dryer running, but not generating heat.

Yesterday, I got out of the house in the morning and went to a park along the lake that has a nice walking/biking trail and did a few miles on it. Weather was gorgeous, views were great.

Sounds like your weekend was nothing but games and taxes.

No, there was another minor fender bender also. You're gonna love it when the girls get their licenses.

Today is Monday, May 3, the 123rd day of 2021.
There are 242 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlights in History:

On May 3, 1948, the Supreme Court, in Shelley v. Kraemer, ruled that covenants prohibiting the sale of real estate to Blacks or members of other racial groups were legally unenforceable.

On this date:

In 1765, the first school of medicine in the American colonies, the Medical School of the College of Philadelphia (now the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania), was founded.

In 1802, Washington, D.C. was incorporated as a city.

In 1916, Irish nationalists Padraic Pearse, Thomas Clarke and Thomas MacDonagh were executed by a British firing squad; they were among 16 people put to death for their roles in the Easter Rising.

In 1937, Margaret Mitchell won the Pulitzer Prize for her novel, “Gone with the Wind.”

In 1979, Conservative Party leader Margaret Thatcher was chosen to become Britain’s first female prime minister as the Tories ousted the incumbent Labour government in parliamentary elections.

In 1984, Michael Dell founded Dell Computer Corp. while a student at the University of Texas in Austin.

In 1987, The Miami Herald said its reporters had observed a young woman spending “Friday night and most of Saturday” at a Washington townhouse belonging to Democratic presidential candidate Gary Hart. (The woman was later identified as Donna Rice; the resulting controversy torpedoed Hart’s presidential bid.)

In 1999, some 70 tornadoes roared across Oklahoma and Kansas, killing 46 people and injuring hundreds.

In 2006, a federal jury in Alexandria, Virginia, rejected the death penalty for al-Qaida conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui (zak-uh-REE’-uhs moo-SOW’-ee), deciding he should spend life in prison for his role in 9/11; as he was led from the courtroom, Moussaoui taunted, “America, you lost.”

In 2007, Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II arrived in Virginia for the commemoration of Jamestown’s 400th anniversary.

In 2009, Mexican President Felipe Calderon told state television that a nationwide shutdown and an aggressive informational campaign appeared to have helped curtail an outbreak of swine flu in Mexico.

In 2015, two gunmen were shot and killed by a police officer in Garland, Texas, after they opened fire outside a purposely provocative contest for cartoon depictions of the Prophet Muhammad.

Ten years ago: The White House said that Osama bin Laden was unarmed when Navy SEALs burst into his room at his Pakistan compound and shot him to death, a change in the official account that raised questions about whether the U.S. ever planned to capture the terrorist leader alive. Chicago’s Derrick Rose became at age 22 the NBA’s youngest MVP. Actor-director Jackie Cooper died in Santa Monica, California, at age 88.

Five years ago: In a stunning triumph for a political outsider, Donald Trump all but clinched the Republican presidential nomination with a resounding victory in Indiana that knocked rival Ted Cruz out of the race.

One year ago: In a televised town hall, President Donald Trump increased his projection for the total U.S. coronavirus death toll to as many as 100,000, but insisted that states could gradually lift lockdowns and still protect people from the pandemic. An incursion by a few dozen Venezuelan military deserters hoping to overthrow the country’s socialist leadership, backed by a former U.S. Green Beret, ended in failure on a Venezuelan beach with six insurgents dead and two former U.S. Special Forces soldiers behind bars.

I don't see the muscle behind a challenge.  Just as there is never a challenge to increasing "sin taxes".
Tobacco lobbying groups are no NRA.

Tobacco lobbying groups are no NRA.
And for a very simple reason.  There are more gun owners and more of those who sympathize with the right to keep and bear arms than cigar smokers.  And too many of those few cigar smokers are willing to vote for proponents of big government.  So...this is what we get.

Uncle Joe might have that Nationwide before long...
Sure sounds like it. But I'm sure with the legal challenges that will follow, it'll be a long time before it actually goes into effect.
I don't see the muscle behind a challenge.  Just as there is never a challenge to increasing "sin taxes".

Exactly right.  NRA may have some trouble moving forward however, with the scandals, gross corruption and pissing away of funds....kinda like regular gubment.

Not happy to see that Warped has not been keeping up inventory on most of it's lines....GoTF (which is only half theirs) and La Hacienda seem to be the only ones in stock at most places...

I don't know, the CRA seems to have been doing a decent job of putting off various changes Obama wanted to make back in the day.

Sure, because in those days the CRA had sympathetic ears in congress, and then sympathetic ears in the executive branch AND congress for the past four years.  Those days are gone.  The Biden administration is moving aggressively on all fronts.  They hope to beat the historical odds and not lose seats as the incumbent party usually does in midterms.  Failing that, they hope to get as much rammed through while they can.

The Democrat failure to even make the runoff in Texas is a likely wakeup call that erosion of support for Trump in a red district doesn't equate to rising support for Democrats.  It's also a likely warning that the left's agenda isn't as popular as they think it is, especially when considered with the data that shows a 20% drop in support for gun control among younger voters.  There isn't a lot of evidence suggesting that the Dems can beat the odds next year and retain their majority.  So they are going to be pushing whatever they can through in hopes it can stick.

That's been the Dems problem for years now.  Pompous, pious agenda that they can't understand isn't particularly popular.
