Title: 1/12/2021
Post by: CigarBanter on January 12, 2021, 12:25:54 AM
Happy Tuesday! In between insults we'll occasionally discuss cigars.  Join in and perhaps learn something along the way. Warning: don't proceed if you have thin skin but don't be afraid to post either... And welcome aboard!

Yuk had to work 2nd shift. Gave my shift for tomorrow away, then back to days. Think I’ll have a AJ Cameroon tomorrow as they just arrived after two weeks on the road.

It started out a decent game but when are teams gonna learn that you can't give up 28 points in a quarter and still win? Deja vu.

Door #3 at cigar.com has the Room 101 Payback Connecticut. Not a great stick but I've been carrying one around for several days. Perhaps this is a sign that I should finally light it. Although, it is cold as heck out there. What's the rush?

It's Takeout Tuesday here. It was Taco Tuesday for a while, then the wife got sick of making and eating tacos every week, so we shifted our approach a bit. :D

We occasionally get tacos from a local place which is delightful. But it's been a while since we made them ourselves.

Yeah, I think it may hit 50° here in the next couple of days but it's about 25° at the moment. I can definitely hear the furnace churning.

Today is Tuesday, Jan. 12, the 12th day of 2021.
There are 353 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History:
On Jan. 12, 2000, in a 5-4 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court, in Illinois v. Wardlow, gave police broad authority to stop and question people who run at the sight of an officer.

On this date:
In 1773, the first public museum in America was organized in Charleston, South Carolina.
In 1828, the United States and Mexico signed a Treaty of Limits defining the boundary between the two countries to be the same as the one established by an 1819 treaty between the U.S. and Spain.
In 1910, at a White House dinner hosted by President William Howard Taft, Baroness Rosen, wife of the Russian ambassador, caused a stir by requesting and smoking a cigarette [–] it was, apparently, the first time a woman had smoked openly during a public function in the executive mansion. (Some of the other women present who had brought their own cigarettes began lighting up in turn.)

In 1915, the U.S. House of Representatives rejected, 204-174, a proposed constitutional amendment to give women nationwide the right to vote.
In 1948, the U.S. Supreme Court, in Sipuel v. Board of Regents of University of Oklahoma, unanimously ruled that state law schools could not discriminate against applicants on the basis of race.
In 1959, Berry Gordy Jr. founded Motown Records (originally Tamla Records) in Detroit.

In 1969, the New York Jets of the American Football League upset the Baltimore Colts of the National Football League 16-7 in Super Bowl III, played at the Orange Bowl in Miami.
In 1971, the groundbreaking situation comedy “All in the Family” premiered on CBS television.
In 1976, mystery writer Dame Agatha Christie died in Wallingford, England, at age 85.

In 1995, Qubilah Shabazz (keh-BEE’-lah shuh-BAZ’), the daughter of Malcolm X, was arrested in Minneapolis on charges she’d tried to hire a hitman to kill Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan (the charges were later dropped in a settlement with the government).
In 2006, Mehmet Ali Agca (MEH’-met AH’-lee AH’-juh), the Turkish gunman who shot Pope John Paul II in 1981, was released from an Istanbul prison after serving more than 25 years in Italy and Turkey for the plot against the pontiff and the slaying of a Turkish journalist.
In 2010, Haiti was struck by a magnitude-7 earthquake; the Haitian government said 316,000 people were killed, while a report prepared for the U.S. Agency for International Development suggested the death toll may have been between 46,000 and 85,000.

Ten years ago: President Barack Obama visited Tucson, Arizona, the scene of a shooting rampage that wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and killed six others; he urged Americans to refrain from partisan bickering and to embrace the idealistic vision of democracy held by 9-year-old Christina Taylor Green, the youngest of the victims.

Five years ago: In his final State of the Union address, President Barack Obama urged Americans to rekindle their belief in the promise of change that first carried him to the White House, declaring that the country must not allow election-year fear and division to put economic and security progress at risk. Iran detained 10 American sailors and their two small Navy boats after the boats drifted into Iranian waters; the sailors and their vessels were released the following day. The St. Louis Rams’ move back to Los Angeles was approved by 30 of 32 NFL owners. Media mogul Rupert Murdoch announced his engagement to ex-supermodel Jerry Hall, Mick Jagger’s ex-wife (they married the following March).

One year ago: President Donald Trump and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sparred ahead of Trump’s impeachment trial, with Pelosi saying senators would “pay a price” for blocking new witnesses, and Trump labeling the House impeachment vote a “totally partisan hoax.” Defense Secretary Mark Esper said he had seen no hard evidence that four American embassies had been under a possible threat, as Trump had claimed, when the president authorized the drone strike that killed Iran’s top military commander.

I've been wondering for a long time now what defines a "moderate."  If I'm a hardcore gun rights supporter, and hardcore anti-tax, but couldn't care less who marries or has sex with who, have a deep distrust of law enforcement at all levels, believe the virus and the pandemic are real (but have philosophical concerns that government is given too much latitude), have a problem with illegal immigration (but have a number of friends who are undocumented), and I believe there is persistent racism and xenophobia in the human race (but doubt that legislation is going to cure that), and giggle that the Big Corporations the Democrats once thought were a threat to America are now the backbone of their communication arm - am I a Nazi?

Meeting time coming up. Don't anyone delete their account while I'm gone.
Not gonna lie. I'm considering it.
Well, at least give us a hazzuh before you shut down the whole works. When does the site come up for renewal, June?
Actually March. I'm not really gonna tear it town. Even if I am the only one left posting and deleting bot accounts.

Meet the new boss.  Same as the old boss.
If I wasn't worried about losing any more banterers, I'd tell you how ridiculous that is. Instead, I'll just say Go Browns!
And there isn't much left to lose.  I think Oy and I are the only conservatives left here.

And there isn't much left to lose.  I think Oy and I are the only conservatives left here.
I'm a lifelong Republican, used to be conservative, but the whole system has shifted, so I guess I would now be considered a moderate.  But a moderate Republican who hates Trumpf (who isn't a Republican or conservative) and is surprised at people being surprised at his behavior now.
I would say we pretty much align on most.  I also own guns but have no problem with registration.  I am personally pro life, but am not about to tell anyone else what choice to make (so there's a conservative no-no).  I'm pro-police but definitely believe there are more than a few bad eggs in uniform that should be prosecuted without the blanket protections currently afforded.  Don't like unions, but acknowledge they are responsible for many of the benefits I received when I was working.  I do not vote party lines.  I believe good government can help in certain situations but it's not my parent....so  not a Nazi, not a conservative, not a Democrat (even a moderate Democrat...however many of them are left).

Fiscally conservative but a social liberal?? I think we are basically on the same page.
Classical liberal. I want government limited as much as possible. People can marry who they want without government interference, and I can criticize people all I want, and vice versa, without government interference. But one proper domain of government is regulating interstate commerce, which covers big tech.

I don't buy into ANY conspiracy theories. I once had the opportunity to discuss Watergate with Chuck Colson. He laughed about conspiracies and observed that he and the various other cover-up conspirators couldn't keep a conspiracy going for 8 weeks.

Now, on the other hand, people have begun branding everything a conspiracy theory, such as the accusation that Hunter Biden is corrupt, and the corruption benefitted Joe. That got derided and dismissed before the election, and ignored by the press. Now we know Hunter was under investigation, and there is email evidence that Hunter brokered access to Joe - in contradiction of Joe's denials - for people who were ponying up cash. That's not a conspiracy theory.
