America is a republic and not a pure democracy. The contemporary efforts to weaken our republican customs and institutions in the name of greater equality thus run against the efforts by America’s Founders to defend our country from the potential excesses of democratic majorities. American republicanism and the ordered liberty it makes possible are grounded in the Federalists’ recognition that non-majoritarian parts of the community make legitimate contributions to the community’s welfare, and that preserving these contributions is the hallmark of political justice. But, the careful balance produced by our mixed republic is threatened by an egalitarianism that undermines the social, familial, religious, and economic distinctions and inequalities that undergird our political liberty. Preserving the republican freedoms we cherish requires tempering egalitarian zeal and moderating the hope for a perfectly just democracy.
Excellent summary PolySciDean.
Tomorrow you can give us a definition of socialism and Fascism, neither of which most people seem to know.
That's because in practice there are so few differences.

With great news on Pfizer vaccine and Moderna results in a week or so, looking good.  Buy stock in dry ice!  Distribution going to be a bit difficult.
Much controversy surrounding the timing of the announcement from Pfizer, which waited until the business day after Biden was declared winner when they had information at least a week prior to the election. Also CEO sold 62% of his stock after announcement. Pfizer also denied being part of project "warp speed" but then later had to admit they received 2Bil in funding to develop vaccine
Maybe Drumpf should throw them a lawsuit too, since he's passing them out like candy right now. ;)
If he gets States overturned and wins reelection you can bet on a severe cleansing
Rick and I will be smoking in my laundry room next to my new furnace before that happens.  8)

@LTG - your boiler man should be pulling in anytime now. better get the cigars ready.
Can he do better than $3996 for a new furnace and thermostat? Cause that's what's going in tomorrow morning.

Ouch.  I committed nearly $3K yesterday for work on two guitars.  That stung some.

Looks like today's banter has taken a facebookerish turn.  Adios for now, mofos.
I get all my professional, financial, medical, and political advice from the experts on FB. didn't know uneducated people were so smart. 😂
What I don't get is why so many educated people are so dumb...
When you figure that out, let me know.
Might have something to do with all book learning and not enough real life experience or common sense.
Seriously.

I can't complain too much. We've been here 15 years, and this is the first major thing that's needed replacement.

I could price out a new boiler but that wouldn't help you any. Did the guy say what was wrong? How old is your boiler?

He wasn't sure what was causing the issues it was having this morning, because obviously, when he got here, it was working beautifully. But he did say the motor was grinding a bit, and something else was running a bit rough. Figured we could either spend half that replacing parts that needed replacing, or just do the whole thing right now and be done with it. It was installed in 2002 (oddly enough, also by this guy), so it was coming up on 19 years old.

I will concede this theory.  He and other politicians on both sides have stoked the flames against "Big Pharma" while hiding their own complicity in the cost issues.  After Trumpf taking personal credit for Operation Warp Speed successes and providing little recognition to the many that have contributed, I'm sure they enjoyed sticking it to him.  Believe I saw a report that Biden had been informed of the Pfizer info over the weekend before Trump as well.
Correct, heard the same. I also heard the FDA sat on an Eli Lilly submission for a successful treatment (not vaccine) for over 30 days then released the good news a day after the Biden declaration
Don't know if that's correct or not, FDA being a government agency is not known for speed.  In truth, 80% of "Warp Speed" is keeping the FDA at the ready for timely review and approval of the various steps.  The FDA reviews in the normal process can take 6 months to a year and the company will wait to proceed to the next assessment phase until they get that approval.  With this program, companies go on to the next step as soon as they are ready.  The other main component is that with government money, the companies are producing and stockpiling product prior to approval.  They would never take that financial risk with their money.  Process has more moving parts than most realize.

My understanding with the Lilly review, part of the standard process is the independent review (outside of the FDA) which is always done to assure impartial assessment (so the FDA can not be accused of politics or professional bias).  Unfortunately, politicians decided this was not necessary and wanted to skip that step.  They made the same issue with the two vaccine reviews and were ignored.

I would say there are big differences in the formally defined (ideal) states, but in practice most working systems are on a sliding scale of actually following a given philosophy.  Perfectly demonstrated in the "Animal Farm" narrative.
