Happy Tuesday! In between insults we'll occasionally discuss cigars.  Join in and perhaps learn something along the way. Warning: don't proceed if you have thin skin but don't be afraid to post either... And welcome aboard!

Today is Tuesday, May 16, the 136th day of 2023.
There are 229 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History:

On May 16, 1943, the nearly month-long Warsaw Ghetto Uprising came to an end as German forces crushed the Jewish resistance and blew up the Great Synagogue.

On this date:

In 1770, Marie Antoinette, age 14, married the future King Louis XVI of France, who was 15.

In 1866, Congress authorized minting of the first five-cent piece, also known as the “Shield nickel.”

In 1929, the first Academy Awards were presented. “Wings” won “best production,” while Emil Jannings (YAHN’-ings) and Janet Gaynor were named best actor and best actress.

In 1939, the federal government began its first food stamp program in Rochester, New York.

In 1957, federal agent Eliot Ness, who organized “The Untouchables” team that took on gangster Al Capone, died in Coudersport, Pennsylvania, at age 54.

In 1960, the first working laser was demonstrated at Hughes Research Laboratories in Malibu, California, by physicist Theodore Maiman.

In 1966, China launched the Cultural Revolution, a radical as well as deadly reform movement aimed at purging the country of “counter-revolutionaries.”

In 1975, Japanese climber Junko Tabei became the first woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

In 1990, death claimed entertainer Sammy Davis Jr. in Los Angeles at age 64 and “Muppets” creator Jim Henson in New York at age 53.

In 1997, President Bill Clinton publicly apologized for the notorious Tuskegee experiment, in which government scientists deliberately allowed Black men to weaken and die of treatable syphilis.

In 2007, anti-war Democrats in the Senate failed in an attempt to cut off funds for the Iraq war.

In 2016, President Barack Obama called on the nation to support law enforcement officers as he bestowed the Medal of Valor on 13 who risked their lives.

Ten years ago: President Barack Obama named a temporary chief for the scandal-marred Internal Revenue Service and pressed Congress to approve new security money to prevent another Benghazi-style terrorist attack. “The Office” aired its final episode after nine seasons on the air on NBC. Candice Glover won the 12th season of “American Idol” on Fox.

Five years ago: Officials at Michigan State University said they had agreed to pay $500 million to settle claims from more than 300 women and girls who said they were assaulted by sports doctor Larry Nassar. North Korea canceled high-level talks with South Korea after the nation engaged in joint military exercises with the United States. Five people were killed as thunderstorms struck the northeastern U.S.

One year ago: The U.S. death toll from COVID-19 hits 1 million. The once-unimaginable figure only hinted at the multitudes of loved ones and friends staggered by grief and frustration. Some of those left behind said they cannot return to normal. More than 260 Ukrainian fighters, including some badly wounded, were evacuated from a steel plant in the ruined city of Mariupol and taken to areas under Russia’s control. Baby formula maker Abbott reached an agreement with U.S. health regulators to restart production at its largest domestic factory amid a national shortage.

Was interested to follow up on Raz's comments on Danger Zone last night.  Not even the second, third, ...or fifth choice.

Film producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson, along with music supervisor Michael Dilbeck, had over 300 songs to employ on Top Gun. Testing compositions against the dailies of the opening scenes at the aircraft carrier, nothing satisfied them, and Bruckheimer asked soundtrack producer Giorgio Moroder to write something. With the help of songwriter Tom Whitlock, he composed "Danger Zone" and had Joe Pizzulo record a demo. With the approval of the producers, soundtrack distributor Columbia Records requested Moroder to have "Danger Zone" performed by an artist signed by the label.[3] Pizzulo's original demo version would later make a partial appearance in the 1987 TV movie Cracked Up.

The band Toto was originally intended to perform the track, but legal conflicts between the producers of Top Gun and the band's lawyers prevented this.[4] According to Steve Lukather, when the band sent their version to the producers, they were told that only Joseph Williams' vocal would be used, which the band deemed unacceptable and pulled out.[5] In a 2022 interview with AXS TV, Kenny Loggins revealed that it was Jefferson Starship that was the first act to be offered the track, but the band pulled out of the project.[6]

Corey Hart was also approached to perform "Danger Zone", which he declined, preferring to write and perform his own compositions.[7] Loggins said in a 2022 interview that Kevin Cronin told him he said no because the notes were too high.[8]

Eventually, the film producers offered the song to Loggins, who would recall his assent to recording "Danger Zone" as "a very snap judgement".[4][9] Whitlock went to Loggins' Encino home, and once shown the lyrics, the singer added his own improvisations.[3] Reaching number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, "Danger Zone" was kept out of the number 1 spot by Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer". It became Loggins' second-highest chart hit, bested only by his 1984 number 1 hit "Footloose". In a 2008 interview, Loggins said that the song does not represent himself as an artist.[9]  (Wikipedia)

With all that, I do take some issue with the comments by Raz (who has much more a musicians mentality than me).

I don't know of many performers or bands that only perform their own stuff, and thats a good thing for all those musician/songwriters out there who ain't great singers or performers.

Considering the number of songs Loggins has written or co-written, I don't think he has anything to prove to anybody.

Wouldn't consider myself a fan of his, but from a non-musician perspective (since my saxophone days are long gone and I never got past the beginner stage of guitar playing), Danger Zone is a banger, as the kids say.

No, and I didn't mean to imply that he did. Loggins can do whatever he wishes. That's what I meant by "following his muse."

I just don't like the song, which is neither here nor there. But his own comment that the song doesn't represent him as an artist speaks for itself. He also doesn't own any portion of the copyright, so he's not getting royalties for it. So my admittedly rhetorical question becomes, "then why do it?"

There ARE several possible answers. He does have a song on the Top Gun soundtrack that is his own composition - "Playing with the Boys." That song is, IMHO, a better song, and does represent Loggins. Maybe that's the deal he cut to get his song in the movie and in the soundtrack.  Maybe he owed somebody a favor. Maybe he got someone to owe him a favor.

In context, it's still odd. With the exception of Toto, the artists listed in the prior post that turned the song down were all down the food chain from Loggins in 1985-86. And Toto didn't have the commercial history that Loggins did.

But that was my point about Loggins. I don't get the choices he makes. About half the albums he's ever done are among my favorite albums. The others, in my opinion and my opinion alone, flat suck. The only one that falls in between is "Vox Humana," which only partly sucks.

I'm sure Kenny Loggins loses no sleep over my opinions, and neither should anyone else. He can cry all the way to the bank.

In Texas in the 1970s, those would be "Freaks," in contrast to "Ropers" who wore boots and cowboy hats and dipped Copenhagen.

In Washington in the early 80s, they would be "Stoners." Contrast to "Loggers" who wore braces, high water jeans, moccasins, and dipped Copenhagen, or "Cowboys" (equivalent to Ropers).

Some talk about music yesterday and today.
I really measure an artist on how well they perform live.
A lot of what I listen to is live.
I judge bands that way too. Never was a fan of Madonna's but saw her show about 20 years ago. It was absolute crap. Same with Mariah Carey. Again, started as not a fan and validated my opinion.

On the other hand, I wasn't a huge Lionel Ritchie fan either and appreciated him more after seeing him live. Same with Billie Eilish. She impressed the shit out of me. Her brother, Finneas, even moreso.
