Today is Sunday, Jan. 21, the 21st day of 2024.
There are 345 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History:

On Jan. 21, 2010, a bitterly divided U.S. Supreme Court, in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, vastly increased the power of big business and labor unions to influence government decisions by freeing them to spend their millions directly to sway elections for president and Congress.

On this date:

In 1793, during the French Revolution, King Louis XVI, condemned for treason, was executed on the guillotine.

In 1910, the Great Paris Flood began as the rain-swollen Seine River burst its banks, sending water into the French capital.

In 1915, the first Kiwanis Club, dedicated to community service, was founded in Detroit.

In 1924, Russian revolutionary Vladimir Lenin died at age 53.

In 1942, pinball machines were banned in New York City after a court ruled they were gambling devices that relied on chance rather than skill (the ban was lifted in 1976).

In 1950, former State Department official Alger Hiss, accused of being part of a Communist spy ring, was found guilty in New York of lying to a grand jury. (Hiss, who proclaimed his innocence, served less than four years in prison.)

In 1976, British Airways and Air France inaugurated scheduled passenger service on the supersonic Concorde jet.

In 1977, on his first full day in office, President Jimmy Carter pardoned almost all Vietnam War draft evaders.

In 2003, the Census Bureau announced that Hispanics had surpassed blacks as America’s largest minority group.

In 2013, a day after being inaugurated for a second term in a private ceremony, President Barack Obama took a public oath, summoning a divided nation to act with “passion and dedication” to broaden equality and prosperity at home, nurture democracy around the world and combat global warming.

In 2017, a day after Donald Trump’s inauguration, more than 1 million people rallied at women’s marches in the nation’s capital and cities around the world to send the new president an emphatic message that they wouldn’t let his agenda go unchallenged.

In 2020, the U.S. reported its first known case of the new virus circulating in China, saying a Washington state resident who had returned the previous week from the outbreak’s epicenter was hospitalized near Seattle.

In 2021, on his first full day in office, President Joe Biden signed 10 executive orders aimed at combating the coronavirus pandemic.

In 2022, the FBI said Brian Laundrie, the boyfriend of slain cross-country traveler Gabby Petito, had admitted to killing her in a notebook discovered near his body in a Florida swamp.

On Thursday I had to make paths in the snow. They still don't have full rome of the back yard
I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing. My backyard looks like downtown Beirut. I need to do a lot more than just shovel some paths. She rings the bell that is by the door to go out and then when we go outside she just uncovers acorns and sticks and chews on them. Then we come back inside and she pees.

Training a puppy I used pee pads and they eventually got closer to the door going out. For me it was positive reinforcement. Always have treats on hand. Reward when able and yell when caught in the act. Good luck.

Ok, so we've learned something new about Raz today, namely, that's he at least partially colorblind. Did we know this already? If so, I've forgotten.

Out of curiosity, which row of yours do you believe is brown? My dad has troubles with greens, reds and browns, but you seemed to have identified green, at least in theory.

No, but in the browser on the laptop, the yellow here looks orange.
A new wrinkle joins the chat.

Definitely leaning towards orange there. How odd.

Home teams now 3-for-3 this weekend, one more to go. And many thanks to the Lions, because now I won't have to hear about Baker anymore this season.

Just getting the game turned on now, was watching Nick Dunlap become the first amateur in 33 years to win on the PGA TOUR. Some big cajones down the stretch for him.

Them Billies don't seem intimidated by them Chiefs.

I never, ever thought I'd say this, but I'm rooting for the Bills today. I admire Patrick Mahomes' talent, but he needs a comeuppance, to keep him from becoming a total smug punk prick - which he's kinda shown signs of doing this season.

Well, you get a little leeway when you're that good and have two rings and two Super Bowl MVPs to show for it in five seasons. But after that, you have to develop some class.

I used to hate on Brady, and he could be a prick too, from time to time. But overall, the man had class.

It's probably an exposure thing. Any time you turn on the TV, you see his face every commercial break. Back in the day, I was sure we'd eventually have an entire commercial break with only Manning commercials.

It took me a while to get the green group, longer to get the brown. This one was pretty deceptive.

Not colorblind, just didn't think to translate colors. I edited the previous post. Happy now?

Here's what it looks like on my phone:

I'm used to it with my dad. We were on the course last year and looking for one of his (yellow) balls. He pointed one out and said I think that's it. I said I doubt it, that one is red.
