Happy Tuesday! In between insults we'll occasionally discuss cigars.  Join in and perhaps learn something along the way. Warning: don't proceed if you have thin skin but don't be afraid to post either... And welcome aboard!

D'oh! Ordered the thermal fuse yesterday. Should be here tomorrow. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Replaced mine and it still runs, but won't heat up. I'm guessing the fuse blowing must've burned out the heating element. We got 16 years out of it, and based on how much laundry we do, I guess that was a pretty good run.

Mine won't kick on at all so I have hope that replacing the fuse will work.

Edit: Come to think of it, mine is probably about 20 years old. We're looking to fix the basement and buy new appliances but I'm not ready just yet. If the thermal fuse buys me another year, I'll take it!

How about them cigar deals, huh? Do you remember when CI was selling Arganese cigars that were meant to be cut in half? There was a cap on both ends and no filler in the middle. The theory was that you would pay tax on one cigar, cut it in half and have two? They were as terrible as one could expect.

Today is Tuesday, April 13, the 103rd day of 2021.
There are 262 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History:

On April 13, 1970, Apollo 13, four-fifths of the way to the moon, was crippled when a tank containing liquid oxygen burst. (The astronauts managed to return safely.)

On this date:

In 1613, Pocahontas, daughter of Chief Powhatan, was captured by English Capt. Samuel Argall in the Virginia Colony. (During a yearlong captivity, Pocahontas converted to Christianity and ultimately opted to stay with the English.)

In 1742, “Messiah,” the oratorio by George Frideric Handel featuring the “Hallelujah” chorus, had its first public performance in Dublin, Ireland.

In 1743, the third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, was born in Shadwell in the Virginia Colony.

In 1861, at the start of the Civil War, Fort Sumter in South Carolina fell to Confederate forces.

In 1870, the Metropolitan Museum of Art was incorporated in New York. (The original museum opened in 1872.)

In 1943, President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C. on the 200th anniversary of the third American president’s birth.

In 1964, Sidney Poitier became the first Black performer in a leading role to win an Academy Award for his performance in “Lilies of the Field.”

In 1992, the Great Chicago Flood took place as the city’s century-old tunnel system and adjacent basements filled with water from the Chicago River. “The Bridges of Madison County,” a romance novel by Robert James Waller, was published by Warner Books.

In 1997, Tiger Woods became the youngest person to win the Masters Tournament and the first player of partly African heritage to claim a major golf title.

In 1999, right-to-die advocate Dr. Jack Kevorkian was sentenced in Pontiac, Michigan, to 10 to 25 years in prison for second-degree murder in the lethal injection of a Lou Gehrig’s disease patient. (Kevorkian ended up serving eight years.)

In 2005, a defiant Eric Rudolph pleaded guilty to carrying out the deadly bombing at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and three other attacks in back-to-back court appearances in Birmingham, Alabama, and Atlanta.

In 2015, a federal judge in Washington sentenced former Blackwater security guard Nicholas Slatten to life in prison and three others to 30-year terms for their roles in a 2007 shooting in Baghdad’s Nisoor Square that killed 14 Iraqi civilians and wounded 17 others.

Ten years ago: Ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and his two sons were detained for investigation of corruption, abuse of power and killings of protesters. A federal jury in San Francisco convicted baseball slugger Barry Bonds of a single charge of obstruction of justice, but failed to reach a verdict on the three counts at the heart of allegations that he’d knowingly used steroids and human growth hormone and lied to a grand jury about it. (Bonds’ conviction for obstruction was ultimately overturned.)

Five years ago: A task force issued a report saying that Chicago police had “no regard for the sanctity of life when it comes to people of color.” A judge in Fort Worth, Texas ordered 19-year-old Ethan Couch, who had used an “affluenza” defense in a fatal drunken-driving wreck, to serve nearly two years in prison. The Golden State Warriors became the NBA’s first 73-win team by beating the Memphis Grizzlies 125-104, breaking the 1996 72-win record of the Chicago Bulls. Kobe Bryant of the Lakers scored 60 points in his final game, wrapping up 20 years in the NBA.

One year ago: President Donald Trump claimed “total” authority to decide how and when to reopen the economy after weeks of tough social distancing guidelines; governors from both parties quickly pointed out that they had primary responsibility for public safety in their states. Charles Thacker Jr., a crew member on the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, died at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Guam, becoming the first active-duty military member to die from the coronavirus. “Good Morning America” host George Stephanopoulos revealed that he had tested positive for the coronavirus, but said he had been relatively symptom-free. Bernie Sanders urged his progressive supporters to rally behind Joe Biden’s presidential campaign. The XFL, a spring professional football league backed by WWE, filed for bankruptcy. Sculptor and painter Glenna Goodacre, who created the Vietnam Women’s Memorial in Washington, D.C., died in New Mexico at the age of 80.

#2 Son gave me a brick of Cella shaving soap for Christmas.  That's really good stuff, though a bit high-maintenance.  You have to freeze the surplus or it goes rancid.  But it works really well.  So I ordered in some of their after shave balm.  I'm not so enthusiastic about that.  It has a bit of a garden smell to it - that weeds and dirt smell.

The new Rockwell 6s stainless-steel razor was also excellent.  I'm not sure it was worth $60 more than my old Parker 96R, but it fits the hand nicely.

Since I was up early and had lots of time, I was tempted to use the very old straight razor.  But had to try out the new safety razor.

Mine isn't a true straight razor, but the same style with replaceable blades. Many moons ago, they had a tent at CF where you could get a straight razor shave. After that, I was hooked. For the shaving cream, I use Hirsh Luxury Shaving Cream, which I have in both lavender and lemon.

A shavette, yes.  #2 son gave me a Parker SRX a couple of Christmases ago.  Straight razor results without the hassle.  Then I inherited a Geo Wolstenholme & Sons straight that dates to the 1870's, which is great because it has touch more heft, but it's a production to use, to be sure.

Straights require serious practice to develop the technique for shaving, and if you're using a "real" straight, then there's a practiced technique for the sharpening and stropping as well. I really should commit to it, but I'm lazy.

Tell me.  I have soaps and creams likely to last until I retire.

Sandalwood is classic, but it's tricky, since nobody is actually using Santalum Album oil anymore in shaving soap.  It's too damned expensive.  My first venture into it was Taylor of Old Bond Street, which works great and is lovely at first, but the heavy floral scent eventually becomes cloying.

I'll have to see what you say about the Hirsch.

Hirsh stuff is fantastic. It's already a cream in the jar so there's no mixing with water to generate a lather, which I think makes for a better lather. The smell is fantastic, and since I'm a yooge fan of lavender, I have yet to tire of it. Plus, I'm cloy by nature.

Same here, that's just too much work. The disposable blades are the way to go. Definitely still a learning curve with that one.

Oof. Sorry to see you on here so early, Bret. Good morning to ya.
Is what it is. Guess I'll give myself a luxury shave today.
I think some massage parlors offer a similar service. Morning, SleeplessRaz.
I actually hate massages but love to be shaved. Used to be able to get one for peanuts. Now those luxury barbershops try to rape your wallet while giving you a shave. Like sex, I'll just do it myself and be done with it.

... I'm not sure it was worth $60 more than my old Parker 96R, but it fits the hand nicely.

In keeping with today's theme,

Morning ClothesLineTony, NewDryerDave and SleeplessInSeattleManscapingRaz.

For the shaving cream, I use Hirsh Luxury Shaving Cream, which I have in both lavender and lemon.

https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01IE3FAOK/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_Y59ZARPWKVXNE135EXEF
Looks like they also have a Sandalwood, that'll be the next one I have to get. But these containers last forever.

Sure, it's just more expensive because it doesn't last as long.

The TOBS Sandalwood I have is a cream, and I also have tubes of Proraso, Palmolive, and Vi-John for travel purposes and because they are classics.  But having learned how to work the harder soaps from an Italian barber, I've come to prefer those.  The trick is to use a Boar-bristle brush rather than Badger, and to put some water into the tub of soap to let it "bloom" for a few minutes...especially if like me you have really hard water.

Shaving is one of those rare cases where I prefer Italian style over Brit.  ;-)

Interesting. I find I rarely have a proper shave anymore, I usually just use the beard trimmer and trim my neck while I'm tidying up the beard and be done with it, since, you know, quarantine and all. But now I think I've been inspired to give myself one later. A shave, not whatever Tony is thinking. ;)

For that matter, try to find a real barbershop anymore.  The one here in town, which was owned by an old family friend, just closed when "Uncle" Chuck finally retired (at 82).  Now all we've got are a bunch of beauty shops.  That is NOT the same thing.

I guess I've finally gotten old.  I don't much care for the modern world.  You can't smoke in it, you can't chase women in it, and you can't disagree in it.  It smells like Axe body spray, sounds like a digital sampler, and looks like a Prius.

And I've reached the age where I'm paying for it, but it's a bunch of punk kids that seem to control it.

Listen to me. And I'm not even a Boomer.
Hahaha. Well said.

Morning ClothesLineTony, NewDryerDave and SleeplessInSeattleManscapingRaz.

For the shaving cream, I use Hirsh Luxury Shaving Cream, which I have in both lavender and lemon.

https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01IE3FAOK/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_Y59ZARPWKVXNE135EXEF
Gillette Proglide and Proglide gel (aloe) for me.
I'm a simple man...
Depends how you define "simple."  Gillette is packing those razors with twice the amount of metal in the multiple blades, all encased in a bunch of plastic made from mideast oil that will be clogging landfills for centuries.  This happened because of an intensive advertising campaign that convinced people that multiple blades are better than one.  It was, of course, bullshit, but people bought it.  Now, no one even asks that question anymore, they just buy whatever Gillette hangs in the aisles of stores.  It's bad for the environment, bad for the wallet, and does nothing for your face, but it's good for China and it's good for OPEC.  And it's "simple" because you don't have to think about it, you just throw whatever you find in the store into your shopping cart, and then throw out three times the waste when all those blades get dull.

But you don't buy cigars or booze that way, so you aren't as "simple" as you claim.  ;-)
