Yesterday the U.S. House of Representatives passed a twelve-bill spending package for the 2018 Fiscal year that includes the Agriculture Appropriations Bill that was approved by a subcommittee earlier this summer. This bill includes language that calls for a premium cigar exemption and predicate date change to August 8, 2016. The bill package now moves to the Senate.
The bill was passed with 211 votes in favor of the package versus 198 against it.
The central point of interest for cigar enthusiasts is that the proposed bill has language in it that says federal funding cannot be used to finalize, implement, administer, or enforce FDA regulations on premium cigars. The proposed bill also includes language to define what a premium cigar is. The funding mechanism would be in place for the Fiscal Year 2018 that begins October 1st, 2017 and ends September 30, 2018.
The challenge will be on the Senate end. Currently, a premium cigar exemption is not a part of the Senate Bill. In order for the exemption and predicate dates to change, the same language must be a part of the Senate bill. However, passing today’s bill marks the first time an exemption or predicate date change has passed through one of the legislative branches.

Today is Friday, Sept. 15, the 258th day of 2017. There are 107 days left in the year.
Today's Highlight in History:
On September 15, 1940, during the World War II Battle of Britain, the tide turned as the Royal Air Force inflicted heavy losses upon the Luftwaffe.
On this date:
In 1789, the U.S. Department of Foreign Affairs was renamed the Department of State.
In 1807, former Vice President Aaron Burr was acquitted of a misdemeanor charge two weeks after he was found not guilty of treason.
In 1857, William Howard Taft - who served as President of the United States and as U.S. chief justice - was born in Cincinnati, Ohio.
In 1917, the first issue of Forbes magazine was published.
In 1935, the Nuremberg Laws deprived German Jews of their citizenship.
In 1942, during World War II, the aircraft carrier USS Wasp was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine; the U.S. Navy ended up sinking the badly damaged vessel.
In 1950, during the Korean conflict, United Nations forces landed at Incheon in the south and began their drive toward Seoul (sohl).
In 1963, four black girls were killed when a bomb went off during Sunday services at the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. (Three Ku Klux Klansmen were eventually convicted for their roles in the blast.)
In 1972, a federal grand jury in Washington indicted seven men in connection with the Watergate break-in.
In 1981, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted unanimously to approve the Supreme Court nomination of Sandra Day O'Connor.
In 1997, two of the nation's most popular diet drugs - dexfenfluramine and fenfluramine - were pulled off the market because of new evidence they could seriously damage patients' hearts.
In 2000, the 2000 Summer Olympics opened in Sydney, Australia, with a seemingly endless parade of athletes and coaches and a spectacular display; Aborigine runner Cathy Freeman ignited an Olympic ring of fire.

Ten years ago: In his Saturday radio address, President George W. Bush said while "formidable challenges" remained in Iraq, the United States would start shifting more troops into support roles in addition to troop withdrawals announced earlier. Several thousand protesters marched from the White House to the Capitol to demand an end to the Iraq war. Sarah Thomas became the first female official to work a game in the Football Bowl Subdivision, formerly I-A, serving as the line judge in the Jacksonville State-Memphis game (which Memphis won, 35-14). Actress-comedian Brett Somers died in Westport, Connecticut, at age 83.
Five years ago: Four days after the deadly attack on a U.S. diplomatic outpost in Benghazi, Libya, al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula called for more attacks on U.S. embassies. The State Department ordered non-essential government personnel and family members to leave its embassies in Sudan and Tunisia and warned U.S. citizens against traveling to the two countries. The National Hockey League locked out its players at 11:59 p.m. EDT; it was the league's fourth shutdown in a decade and one that would cost the league nearly half its season.
One year ago: A report issued by the Republican-led House intelligence committee condemned Edward Snowden, saying the National Security Agency leaker was not a whistleblower and that the vast majority of the documents he stole were defense secrets that had nothing to do with privacy; Snowden's attorney blasted the report, saying it was an attempt to discredit a "genuine American hero." Arizona's first female governor, Democrat Rose Mofford, died in Phoenix at age 94.

Heather Locklear was hospitalized Thursday after she drove her Porsche into a ditch.
Law enforcement sources tell us Locklear was involved in a single car wreck just before 6 PM in Thousand Oaks. We're told Heather crashed into a ditch but was alert after the accident.
The 55-year-old was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.
Cops say neither drugs nor alcohol appear to be involved in the wreck and Heather was not cited.
We've reached out to Heather's rep ... so far, no word back.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Sheriff’s officials in Jacksonville say two men are accused of trying to steal a $2,500 utility pole days after Hurricane Irma caused severe flooding there.
Jacksonville sheriff’s officials say 42-year-old Blake Lee Waller and 46-year-old Victor Walter Apeler were arrested on grand theft charges Wednesday after someone reported seeing them load the pole onto a sports utility vehicle.

Also one year ago today, Mayor Barry moved on to the big CigarFest in the sky.
Wow, that was a year ago already? I actually have a browser tab opened to his obituary. Guess it's been open for a year. Sheesh. Good morning, LTG.
Doesn't your computer ever restart? Sheesh!
Browser on my phone and all the tabs open up again even after restart.
Better call an IT expert.
Not necessary. I know how to close a browser tab, I just choose not to.

Talk about Getting 'R Done: Power restored to all but 1.7 million of the 6.9 million that lost service in Florida.

And why don't we go underground with these lines again?
It's Florida. How often do they get hurricanes?

Exactly. Maybe not every line, but prioritize trunk and main feeder lines and get them under.

oh, I agree. The least they could do is cut back trees well away from power lines. Most big cities nowdays are mostly underground.

But they're politicians. So they'll screw this simple little thing up.

North Korea proves it CAN hit Guam with fresh missile launch over Japan:
Tokyo on nuclear alert as Kim Jong-un fires missile 2,300 miles – 200 miles further than needed to hit US territory
North Korea has launched another intercontinental ballistic missile over northern Japan
Test missile landed 1,240 miles off the island of Hokkaido, just before 7am local time on Friday
It flew some 2,300 miles, which is far enough to reach the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam
Yesterday, North Korea threatened to bomb Japan after the latest round of UN sanctions
In response to the launch, the Japanese government said they will not tolerate more provocation
Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4886026/North-Korea-fires-missile-Japan.html#ixzz4sjplTUU1
Yeah. If there's any more provocation, Japan is going to write a sternly-worded letter to Kim Jong Un.

Florida men caught with stolen power pole strapped to SUV ???
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Sheriff’s officials in Jacksonville say two men are accused of trying to steal a $2,500 utility pole days after Hurricane Irma caused severe flooding there.
Jacksonville sheriff’s officials say 42-year-old Blake Lee Waller and 46-year-old Victor Walter Apeler were arrested on grand theft charges Wednesday after someone reported seeing them load the pole onto a sports utility vehicle.
A police report says an officer noticed a light pole missing from an area on top of a bridge and then spotted a vehicle driving with the pole on top.
He stopped the vehicle and arrested the men.

What could they possibly want with that? Nice to see they were concerned about safety and tied a flag on to the end of it.
Scrap metal
And a tidy amount of it will be copper.

Ya know, I rarely go with scotches over 15 years....aside from the price ::), I find that the flavors tend to mellow out to the point of loosing some of the unique character of the 12-15 year old version. May be my justification for being cheap (relatively), but I'm sticking with it.

When they get over 15 years, they mostly just get smoother. The flavor doesn't change much. Regardless, since I wasn't paying for it, that Talisker tasted mighty fine.

No disagreement there. For me part of that smoothing is a mellowing of the flavors. Maybe like with my cigars, I like getting hit over the head with it.

When we redid the kitchen years ago we got the then current model of the following:
Frigidaire Gallery 30'' Slide-In Gas Range 30" W x 28-5/16" D x 36-5/8" H FGGS3065PF
We have been using it for about 10 years with little to no problems. it is a slide in,
meant to go between cabinets, and it is a stove, not a cooktop. the question is how much do you need
to cook at once( Italians have a big pot of sauce, and the big pasta pot as well).

I was really excited for American Assassin to arrive in theaters. Then I saw the trailer and realized the filmmakers totally ignored the book. Apparently, the notion of making a movie about an assassin exacting revenge on Muslim terrorists would be too bigoted.
Movie is dead on arrival, as far as I'm concerned.

I'm intending to go with a 30". 36" would be a bit too wide. Five burner. We cook like Italians. Current electric cooktop has four burners, but we're always wishing for a fifth.
But it has to be a cooktop. The remodel that was done just before we bought the house eliminated the slide-in-range in favor of dual built-in electric ovens, an electric cooktop, and extra drawers. I'm replacing the electric cooktop with a gas one.

Anybody got any experience with gas cooktops? I have to pick one out.
I've got some big stock pots, for when I make turkey soup, or cook a half
dozen 2lb lobsters, or a big batch of chili. think you might need 120 volt for the pzieo ignitors,
you should have 220V there already. Gas is better if you want to use a Wok.

Take care guys, just remembered it's Friday...

Then don't read Ian Fleming's "The Spy who Loved Me", not even close to the James
Bond movie they made.
Same for "Live and Let Die." I've read all the Fleming novels many times. The thing is, the Bond novels are generally so cartoonish anyway that you don't much care what they do with the movies.
But to shy away from the centrality of Muslim Terrorism in Vince Flynn's books is, in this day and age, clearly political pandering. Instead of Mitch Rapp hunting down Muslim terrorists who kidnapped a businessman and a CIA operative in Beirut, we get some story about Rapp hunting down a rogue CIA operative who's trying to start a global war. In other words, it's yet another narrative about America making its own mess. So it's going to sell real well in France, India, Iran, and Saudi Arabia. And it has a gorgeous Turkish female operative, so the Turks'll dig it. That's what the filmmakers want. Making a movie about killing radical Muslim terrorists is going to cut into international sales.
But that was Vince Flynn's narrative.

I prefer gas period. I'm also going to augment that with a couple of countertop induction units, I think. I'll give one a try anyway.

Went with this Hammer & Sickle Hermitage #1 for my Friday after-work smoke. Nice stick. Burn got a little wonky just before that photograph. Was razor perfect up to that point. Great draw though. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170915/34f6002fe7697379311e2c5b9b75d781.jpg)

Forgot to give my cigar report from last night while talking about 18-year-old Talisker. Smoked a Cohiba Siglo IV and a Romeo y Julieta Bellicoso. Both fine, fine cigars.

Y'know, whenever I went to the Tycoon's house, I'd reach for the Partagas Serie P or Serie D, or a Monte #2. Occasionally I tried a Siglo VI, because it's supposed to be the best, but I always found them too mild, so I tended to stay away from Cohibas. But I may have to splurge on some of those Siglo IV's.
Yeah, right, who'm I kidding? I can buy a gun for the cost of a box of Siglo IV's, I'm sure.
Oh...heh. 10K. Only took me 3 years.

There also appears to be a quota for older overweight asian gay male flight attendants. FMTT's.
Edit. They covered a lot of affirmative action bases on this flight.

Congrats on 10K, Raz!
