Today is Friday, Jan. 20, the 20th day of 2017. There are 345 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On Jan. 20, 1942, Nazi officials held the notorious Wannsee conference, during which they arrived at their "final solution" that called for exterminating Europe's Jews.

On this date:

In 1265, England's first representative Parliament met for the first time.

In 1649, King Charles I of England went on trial, accused of high treason (he was found guilty and executed by month's end).

In 1887, the U.S. Senate approved an agreement to lease Pearl Harbor in Hawaii as a naval base.

In 1936, Britain's King George V died after his physician injected the mortally ill monarch with morphine and cocaine to hasten his death; the king was succeeded by his eldest son, Edward VIII, who abdicated the throne 11 months later to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson.

In 1937, President Franklin D. Roosevelt became the first chief executive to be inaugurated on Jan. 20 instead of March 4.

In 1945, President Franklin D. Roosevelt was sworn into office for an unprecedented fourth term.

In 1957, President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Vice President Richard Nixon were sworn in for their second terms of office in a private Sunday ceremony (a public ceremony was held the next day).

In 1969, Richard M. Nixon was inaugurated as the 37th President of the United States.

In 1977, Jimmy Carter was inaugurated as the 39th President of the United States.

In 1981, Iran released 52 Americans it had held hostage for 444 days, minutes after the presidency had passed from Jimmy Carter to Ronald Reagan.

In 1992, an Air Inter Airbus A-320 crashed near Strasbourg, France, killing 87 of the 96 people on board.

In 2001, George Walker Bush became America's 43rd president after one of the most turbulent elections in U.S. history.

Ten years ago: Twenty-five U.S. troops were killed in Iraq, including 12 in a helicopter crash in Baghdad and five in a sophisticated sneak attack in Karbala. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., launched her first campaign for the White House, saying in a videotaped message on her website: "I'm in, and I'm in to win." Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas began a long-shot bid for the Republican presidential nomination (he withdrew in Oct. 2007).

Five years ago: France threatened to withdraw early from Afghanistan after an Afghan soldier killed four French troops and wounded 15 in a setback for the U.S.-led coalition's efforts to build a national army and allow foreign troops to go home. Singer Etta James, 73, died in Riverside, California.

One year ago: President Barack Obama hailed the revival of the nation's auto industry during a visit to Detroit while acknowledging the water crisis in nearby Flint, Michigan. The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration and NASA announced that 2015 was by far the hottest year in 136 years of record keeping. Kathryn Smith was promoted by the Buffalo Bills to take over as special teams quality control coach, making her the NFL's first full-time female coach.

all the rain, to keep the Californians, in their own state, and not move north.

Sounds great, but I recommend you fly in a gazebo expert.  I know a guy...
I've thought of that. It's his usual form of payment that puts me off.
Not to worry, you're way too young.

Morning Dave, Sammy, Flip, Raz, Mr. Mayor, and UTI.  Everyone have their inauguration day smokes picked out?
Morning, Bean. Don't have any cigars with clever names to list. So I'll probably just have a Cuarenta.
Cuarenta y cinco would be more appropriate.
You keep talking like that and the Secret Service will be giving you your next exam.

With a Cincuenta we could get the job done from a mile away. Just sayin'.

It's vastly improved now that Obama has no power. Whether Trump improves it more or screws it up remains to be seen.

My opinion, and my opinion is completely rooted in my self-interests - I want the government kept out of my bank accounts, my humidor, and my gun cabinet. And if that means the government is going to run short of money, then they should stop spending it on stupid things.

No, because those $750 toilet seats were designed not to turn into shrapnel in battle. So they're going to be more expensive than the ones in your house. But maybe we could force the Joint Chiefs to negotiate harder deals in order to make the money go farther, rather than just handing them the password to the bank account. Maybe they could be $650 toilet seats instead of $750. Maybe we could listen to the general who said it was ridiculous to take five years and spend $14 million to arrive at the decision that the Sig-Sauer P320 should be the next military sidearm. And these Democrats who opposed buying cheaper medications from Canada...talk about Big Pharma stooges.

Why not? We elected Obama to run all the agencies, and he had never finished a term of elective office prior to that.

About every eight years we make someone president who has zero experience.

Rick Perry spent 15 years running the tenth largest economy in the world (the eleventh, btw, is Canada). I think he can learn to manage the Dept. of Energy.

Wait, I thought it was the Republicans that were big money stooges...Now I'm confused  :o
Yeah, buddy. And Trump is a racist, sexist homophobe...even though his cabinet includes women and minorities and he's supported LGBT rights.

But hey, it's politics. It trades in dishonesty. Trump traded on the Birther nonsense, and Obama traded on the Bitter Clingers nonsense, and Hillary...well, y'know...she was under fire in combat. What the fuque ever.
Oh, I'm intimately acquainted with political foolishness.

Can't help you. I wasn't serious about spending any money so I never bothered finding out. There is a CATSRULE code that I believe gives you 17% off orders over $50 though. (Doesn't work on all items)

Actually, the box of 24 with 17% off comes out to $3.39 a piece. Gotta spend $81 to get that tho. Didn't check to see if the code works yet.

i don't think it is a whole hell of a lot better, but try one yourself.  some folks swear
the the diadema shape only available in the V yearly sampler is the best V.  I have even enjoyed a V nub.

Melania's V is pretty hot. But in general, I think most folks prefer the Melanios over the regular V. I know I have one or two lying around. If so, I'll put it on the short list of cigars to smoke. I may have had one previosly but I can't recall. If that is the case, then I guess they weren't that good after all.  ;D

Clearly, I'm an amateur.

Anyone had the Oliva Connecticut Reserve petite corona? Looking for a good, mild shorty.

Pulled on the V double robo tubos. Too good a deal, I thought.
that's the one with the handshake on the band, one of the better connies out there.
at least that's what mike or kirpal told me when i started.

Cool! 30 for about $54 with the discount. Not bad. My cigar spending is out of control. :) I keep telling myself I have enough!
I think he's passed his rookie entrance exam.
Pshaw. $54? That's preschool. To pass his rookie exam requires a $100 minimum order.

Jokes aside, $190 of that went for gifts, and $40 of it was lighters. And I hadn't really bought any cigars to speak of in the previous 12 months.

That's how I justify it to myself, anyway.

Well that does sound reasonable, Raz. A $600 a month cigar habit might be a little excessive.  8)

Congrats on 20k Tony!

I'm not a big Oliva fan in general, nothing wrong with them they just don't do anything for me. That said I've really enjoyed the Melanios I've smoked, I think they are a great bit different from the core "V" line

Having just smoked a Melanio this evening I will agree. Smoother and more consistently rolled vs the regular V line.  Problem is it's tough to find a deal on the Melanio.  Too pricey, but that's a cheapy cheapo assessment.

Friday's been getting here too soon. Between job hunting, studying, and honeydo projects I don't seem to have any time for smoking either. (Less than usual). I'm gonna make it my mission to get one in this weekend.

You are correct, much more likely.  I yield the floor to the Mayor.

And even though it's not cold this evening, it is annoying to be outdoors. It's misting.  Like when you're trying to have a conversation with a close-talker and you get spit on.

I'm beginning to think the warden put the kibosh on bantering and now he can only do it from the office.

No garage or covered patio?  You're going to have to try harder (TWSS).

I need to empty out the detached garage and make myself an LTG style man cave.  It's on the list.
