Good morning, HumpingDave. For this week, today is payday because it's the last of my unemployment.

I know we get paid every other Friday but I'm not sure when that begins.

I don't think I'll be smoking in the car anymore. One thing is to smoke while the car is moving, and you put the a/c or heat on the floor. Then you keep open all the windows slightly so that the smoke goes right out. The other thing is sitting in bumper to bumper traffic eliminating air flow and the smoke just lingers. The car absolutely stinks today. It could also have something to do with the cigar not being a very good one.

I can see that. Hard to do that without stinking up the joint when you can't have the windows all the way down.

Sounds like this office could use a bottle of sanitizer or something.

Today is Wednesday, Dec. 13, the 347th day of 2023.
There are 18 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History:

On Dec. 13, 2000, Republican George W. Bush claimed the presidency a day after the U.S. Supreme Court shut down further recounts of disputed ballots in Florida; Democrat Al Gore conceded, delivering a call for national unity.

On this date:

In 1862, Union forces led by Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside launched futile attacks against entrenched Confederate soldiers during the Civil War Battle of Fredericksburg; the soundly defeated Northern troops withdrew two days later.

In 1937, the Chinese city of Nanjing fell to Japanese forces during the Sino-Japanese War; what followed was a massacre of war prisoners, soldiers and citizens. (China maintains that up to 300,000 people were killed; Japanese nationalists say the death toll was far lower.)

In 1981, authorities in Poland imposed martial law in a crackdown on the Solidarity labor movement. (Martial law formally ended in 1983.)

In 1993, the space shuttle Endeavour returned from its mission to repair the Hubble Space Telescope.

In 1996, the U.N. Security Council chose Kofi Annan of Ghana to become the world body’s seventh secretary-general.

In 2001, the Pentagon publicly released a captured videotape of Osama bin Laden in which the al-Qaida leader said the deaths and destruction achieved by the September 11 attacks exceeded his “most optimistic” expectations.

In 2002, President George W. Bush announced he would take the smallpox vaccine along with U.S. military forces, but was not recommending the potentially risky inoculation for most Americans.

In 2003, Saddam Hussein was captured by U.S. forces while hiding in a hole under a farmhouse in Adwar, Iraq, near his hometown of Tikrit.

In 2007, Major League Baseball’s Mitchell Report was released, identifying 85 names to differing degrees in connection with the alleged use of performance-enhancing drugs.

In 2013, North Korea’s state-run media announced the execution the day before of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s uncle Jang Song Thaek, portraying him as a morally corrupt traitor.

In 2014, thousands of protesters marched in New York, Washington and other U.S. cities to call attention to the killing of unarmed Black men by white police officers who faced no criminal charges.

In 2019, the House Judiciary Committee approved two articles of impeachment accusing President Donald Trump of abuse of power in his dealings with Ukraine and obstruction of Congress in the investigation that followed.

In 2020, the first vials of the Pfizer vaccine against COVID-19 began making their way to distribution sites across the United States.

In 2022, President Joe Biden signed gay marriage legislation, saying “the law and the love it defends strike a blow against hate in all its forms.”

Mr. French was the great Sebastian Cabot, who was also the Narrator for the Disney Winnie the Pooh films, as well as the voice of Bagheera in "The Jungle Book." That man had an otherworldly voice.

Sixteen. There are some in there I happen to know that most wouldn't. Kathy Garver because she was a very early TV crush. Lou Adler and Steve Forbert are names that might be recognized, but most people, I guess, wouldn't know their faces, unless they take a serious interest in songwriting and producing.

Lou Adler was immortalized in Paul Simon's "A Simple Desultory Philippic."

I am not anyone's definition of a "Swifty." The term has nothing to do with music. I did, however, see Taylor Swift perform a solo acoustic set of her own songs before she was famous, and I was impressed. I have no use for what she's become, but she can write songs, and she can work an unfamiliar audience all by herself with an acoustic guitar, which I promise is very, very hard to do. So I respect that.

As for Amy Lee, I'm not a particular fan having never really listened to her music much. I should. But the woman can play, she can sing, and she can write, and there are a LOT of similarities in our respective musical backgrounds, circumstances, and experiences.

She turned it all into musical success, and I only managed to turn it into an avocation. Nevertheless, I have to have a decent amount of respect and sympathy.

The first (and I guess only, so far) concert we took the kids to was an Evanescence/Lindsey Stirling concert. It was quite a show.

I admire here as both a musician and performer, which there aren't too many of.  Would definitely go to a concert, but not pay the asking prices or put up with all the insanity.  Playing piano, banjo and ukulele as well as guitar, writing and singing.  All the hype now is nuts, but I guess she deserves to enjoy her time at the top.
Also like the song Taylor Swift by Walker Hayes

Now that is a pairing I would never have thought of!   :o
They even played some songs together. Lindsey's violin style lends itself well to rock.
