Title: 7/5/2022
Post by: CigarBanter on July 05, 2022, 12:00:18 AM
Happy Tuesday! In between insults we'll occasionally discuss cigars.  Join in and perhaps learn something along the way. Warning: don't proceed if you have thin skin but don't be afraid to post either... And welcome aboard!

Gentlemen, my son is in the kitchen working his personal magic on ribeyes and pork chops. But when he first arrived he came down to my study and disarmed himself. I teased him about being a newb of a concealed carrier. But...it made me think about this group. We don't all see eye to eye, and sometimes I puzzle over the East Coast sensibilities that are part and parcel of being here, including Pork Roll (which we are planning to try). I know, I'm a right-wing, anti-abortion, limited government, gun-toting whacko, and a lousy golfer. But I love cigars, and I love good conversation, and it is a highlight of my day to check in here. Y'all are good people, and good friends.

On this day of celebration of Liberty, which we do all agree on even if it means different things to us, I offer my best wishes. I have not yet gotten the privilege of meeting any of you face-to-face, but you are my friends, and if any one of you messaged me and said you were in trouble, I'd book the next available flight.

I bid you my best wishes. Y'all are important to me. And tonight I am hosting my MIL and SIL, both of whom along with my wife trace their lineage to Newark.

May you enjoy the blessings of liberty...yuh commie bastiges. Peace.
That made me laugh but also rings true. I love you too, brother.

Agreed. Regardless of the smoke, limiting to one seems like intentionally depriving yourself of a lot of good stuff. Just doesn't make sense, especially with so many quality smokes these days.

Pretty sure either Rick or ClemsonDave said it was a solid smoke. I don't believe it's infused with wasabi but I'll be cautious with the retrohale.

FWIW, CI's page says it's not flavored, so there you go. But I definitely would be cautious with that retrohale. I can't do that effectively, even a smooth connie burns the hell out of my sinuses when I do it.

They were pretty good.  Start out with a pepper and spice hammer, then backs off considerably to a fairly mild but pleasant smoke with a general woodiness and light pepper.

Retro in the first 15 minutes is very peppery.  Calms down considerably after that.

I guess smoking for the smoke and not so much for the flavor nuances.

Today is Tuesday, July 5, the 186th day of 2022.
There are 179 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History:

On July 5, 1947, Larry Doby made his debut with the Cleveland Indians, becoming the first Black player in the American League three months after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in the National League. (In the game against the Chicago White Sox at Comiskey Park, Doby, pinch-hitting for Bryan Stephens, struck out in his first at-bat during the seventh inning; Chicago won 6-5.)

On this date:

In 1687, Isaac Newton first published his Principia Mathematica, a three-volume work setting out his mathematical principles of natural philosophy.

In 1811, Venezuela became the first South American country to declare independence from Spain.

In 1865, the Secret Service Division of the U.S. Treasury Department was founded in Washington, D.C., with the mission of suppressing counterfeit currency.

In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the National Labor Relations Act.

In 1940, during World War II, Britain and the Vichy government in France broke off diplomatic relations.

In 1943, the Battle of Kursk began during World War II; in the weeks that followed, the Soviets were able to repeatedly repel the Germans, who eventually withdrew in defeat.

In 1954, Elvis Presley’s first commercial recording session took place at Sun Records in Memphis, Tennessee; the song he recorded was “That’s All Right.”

In 1971, President Richard Nixon certified the 26th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which lowered the minimum voting age from 21 to 18.

In 1975, Arthur Ashe became the first Black man to win a Wimbledon singles title as he defeated Jimmy Connors, 6-1, 6-1, 5-7, 6-4.

In 1977, Pakistan’s army, led by General Mohammad Zia ul-Haq, seized power from President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto (ZUL’-fih-kahr ah-LEE’ BOO’-toh). (Bhutto was executed in 1979.)

In 2008, Venus Williams won her fifth Wimbledon singles title, beating younger sister Serena 7-5, 6-4 in the final.

In 2011, a jury in Orlando, Florida, found Casey Anthony, 25, not guilty of murder, manslaughter and child abuse in the 2008 disappearance and death of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee.

Ten years ago: Trucks carrying NATO supplies rolled into Afghanistan for the first time in more than seven months, ending a painful chapter in U.S.-Pakistan relations that saw the border closed until Washington apologized for an airstrike that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers. Former Argentine dictator Jorge Rafael Videla was convicted and sentenced to 50 years for a systematic program to steal babies from prisoners who were kidnapped, tortured and killed during the military junta’s so-called “dirty war” on leftist dissidents. (Videla died in prison in May 2013.)

Five years ago: The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that two laws passed by Congress did not end the right to a bond hearing for unaccompanied immigrant children who are detained by federal authorities.

One year ago: Amazon founder Jeff Bezos officially stepped down as CEO; he was succeeded by Andy Jassy, who ran Amazon’s cloud-computing business. Filmmaker Richard Donner died in Los Angeles at 91; he had helped create the modern superhero blockbuster with “Superman” in 1978 and mastered the buddy comedy with the “Lethal Weapon” franchise.

Went to buy the Wasabis, and for some reason, Ccom charges much more for the excise tax than other places. I thought maybe I was remembering incorrectly, but I went through the buy process for a sampler of the same price at the Page, and the tax there was more than 40% cheaper. Can't imagine why that would be. Oh well.

And neither of them hold a candle to the Place, who doesn't charge the tax at all.

Fifty bucks minimum to get Case Pork Roll shipped out here.  Total cost, $25/pound.  I don't THINK so.

But...I did find that our preferred grocery store carries Taylor Pork Roll.  $12.99 a pound.  It isn't Case's, but it will have to do.
I've got some Taylor in my freezer right now, good stuff.
I'd have gone and got it yesterday, if  I'd known it was there.  Turns out a search for "pork roll" on the website pulls up no results.  Gotta search for "Taylor Ham."  Obviously we're part of North Jersey out here.

Oh, and I understand TD's "longitudinal slices" now.

Ok, I do the same thing to prevent the cupping effect. What confused me was him saying he cut them into it prior to slicing. I've only ever had the slices, so cutting those notches before slicing never occurred to me, and I couldn't wrap my head around it. Also, "longitudinal slices" was clearly terminology over my head.

I don't know either of the families but Taylor is more readily available near me and it's what I got in the fridge.

Oh well.
And now, the Page won't stop emailing me about "something you left in the cart." Yeesh.

It smacks of desperation. Especially the second email in an hour.

Must be because you're in ohio? I'm paying roughly $0.09 on the dollar. Here in New York at the b&ms get charged going in the door and out the door.

Yeah, Ohio definitely has the excise tax, so it being there isn't a surprise. The surprise is why it's so much more at Ccom for cigars that cost the same at the Page.
