And my interest in them...

Horseshoe crabs are extremely important to the biomedical industry because their unique, copper-based blue blood contains a substance called Limulus amebocyte lysate. The substance, which coagulates in the presence of small amounts of bacterial toxins, is used to test for sterility of medical equipment and virtually all intravenous drugs.
Similar to Dean's interest.

Must take a long time for land crabs to fuk, sheesh Dean left out about 7 this morning and here we are still waiting on a report.
inspiration may have stuck, something about
horsey style.... :o

Those horseshoe crabs are some crazy, alien looking things...
plus, they have been around since the dinosaur time.....

Well, maybe if they looked a little more appetizing, someone would have made a popular recipe, and we could have fished them into extinction.
There is next to no meat on them.  Only use is as bait.

Actually that statement is incorrect as the test has nothing to do with sterility.  It does test for toxins/ pyrogens however.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation paid more than $1 million for a hacking tool that opened the iPhone of a terrorist gunman in San Bernardino, Calif., the head of the agency said Thursday.

Speaking at the Aspen Security Forum in London, FBI Director James Comey didn’t cite a precise figure for how much the government paid for the solution to cracking the phone but said it was more than his salary for the seven-plus years remaining in his term at the FBI.

His annual salary is about $180,000 a year, so that comes to $1.26 million or more.
