Well I feel much better now. Except for this fat lip I got out of nowhere. Honest, she didn't even slug me tonight. Guess it's time to get some shut-eye and hope the swelling goes down by morning. Good night, Mike.

Blonde Murder Victim
-------------------------
WANTED FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER (the actual AP headline)
Linda Burnett, 23, a resident of San Diego, was visiting her inlaws, and
while there went to a nearby supermarket to pick up some groceries.
Several people noticed her sitting in her car with the windows rolled up
and with her eyes closed, with both hands behind the back of her head.
One customer who had been at the store for a while became concerned
and walked over to the car. He noticed that Linda's eyes were now open,
and she looked very strange. He asked her if she was okay, and Linda
replied that she'd been shot in the back of the head, and had been holding
her brains in for over an hour. The man called the paramedics, who broke
into the car because the doors were locked and Linda refused to remove
her hands from her head. When they finally got in, they found that Linda had
a wad of bread dough on the back of her head. A Pillsbury biscuit canister
had exploded from the heat, making a loud noise that sounded like a gunshot,
and the wad of dough hit her in the back of her head.
When she reached back to find out what it was, she felt the dough and thought
it was her brains. She initially passed out, but quickly recovered and tried to
hold her brains in for over an hour until someone noticed and came to her aid.
And, yes, Linda is a blonde.

Yeah, there's precedent. And it's not like box splits are impossible to pull off. Be a while before I need to reload on them anyway, and despite what people say who just regurgitate what they read online without any actual evidence, I think they do just fine with 'age'. Still have some from their original release and they've every bit as good as the ones I'll smoke fresh.

My son's 31st birthday is coming up. advice would be helpful. Either one killer
under $200, or a combo of different tastes like a home grown sampler

I'm still only learning my own preferences for scotch, can't speak to any high end recommendations. That said, if I had $200 to spend on ONE bottle right now, had to get
It today (meaning no special editions/yearly releases and regularly available), I'd go for an older Japanese whiskey. Yamazaki 18, or Hibiki 17 year or older.
But speaking of Scotch, got a Laphroaig/Auchentoshan tasting tonight.

At 31, I would not think he is too set in his scotch ways yet, and a single high priced offering may not be fully appreciated. Now I'm just listing general names, but of course each has different ages and different cask methods used. I would probably go with the basic offering, 12 year is fine, maybe a 15 if on sale.
Highland: Macallan, Dalmore, Highland Park, Dalwhinnie or Glenmorange
Lowland: Glenkinchie
Islay: Laphroaig, Ardbeg, Lagavulin
Speyside: Glenrothes, Abelour, Balvenie (Glenfiddich and Glenlivet are most common, but are fine light offerings)

Yes. All three of the Islay's mentioned have a strong peat nose. You open a bottle of Laphroaig and the room will soon smell like a campfire.

So will your breath the next morning. Peat is definitely a common factor in every scotch that has stood out to me so far. And I also think it really compliments a cigar. Only real problem is that it totally overpowers anything else you'll drink that night.

True, the peat note is present in all scotch, but the Laphroaig and other Islay's take it up a few notches. You will understand after tonight. Kind of like the pepper notes of a Pepin, it's distinctive.

Flip, I think the most important question here is, what does your son currently enjoy?? Being new or not really knowing is a valid answer, too. So much variety that you could give him the most expensive Islay scotch on the market and he'll hate it if he doesn't care for that style.

The strong peat nose is generally a defining characteristic of all Islay scotches. Little reason for that other than tradition, which is, of course, everything.

Yes. All three of the Islay's mentioned have a strong peat nose. You open a bottle of Laphroaig and the room will soon smell like a campfire.
The strong peat nose is generally a defining characteristic of all Islay scotches. Little reason for that other than tradition, which is, of course, everything.
Except for Bunnahabhain or Bruichladdich.

Picked up a Garage Brewing Marshmallow Milk Stout over the weekend. Sounded like ST Creme Brûlée but not quite as sweet. Intended to drink it Sunday but whiskey got to me first.

Have the Auchentoshan first.....and wear your big boy pants.
So I've been told. I've had Laphroaig Cask Strength before and really liked it, but think that's it from tonight's line up. We're having:
Auchentoshan American Oak
Auchentoshan Three Wood
Auchentoshan Virgin Oak
Laphroaig 10
Laphroaig Quarter Cask
Laphroaig Triple Wood
Laphroaig 18
I'm salivating! Very nice lineup, you will enjoy. I'm anxious to try the American Oak myself, I've heard its almost transitional between classic scotch and American whiskey.
Aren't you in California?? But if I recall, you're up in Irvine this trip, correct?
That I am, and if I went to that tasting, I probably wouldn't make it back....lol

hi all!
Afternoon, Scotch. I mean, Sam!
-
Flip, I think the most important question here is, what does your son currently enjoy?? Being new or not really knowing is a valid answer, too. So much variety that you could give him the most expensive Islay scotch on the market and he'll hate it if he doesn't care for that style.
Islays are always a risky proposition anyway. Too strong a taste for most folks new to scotch, and among longtime scotch drinkers there are those who love it and those who despise it. My general rule of thumb if buying a bottle for someone is, "Highland for noobs, Speyside for vets, and Islay only if I know they love it." Of course, Brits will castigate the Highland scotches as "Lady's Scotch," and seem to believe Scotch begins and ends in Speyside...but dafuck do the Brits know?

Aberlour 12yr is amazing, highly recommend that choice - also fairly easy drinking.
Glenmo Nectar D'Or is also amazing
And if Flip doesn't drink scotch, he's going to be searching long and far for something called Glenmo.....
I'm thinking it one of the Glenmorangie specialties, like there different types of casks, they were aged in (sherry, port, etc...) funny story, I had just offered some Glenffidich to my mother in law, for her drink, but she didn't know it, she asked don't you have any good scotch? Told her wait, I might have a bottle of J&B left over from your daughter's dead husband.. then she was happy

To characterize. I think the lowland style is unmistakable yet difficult to define. It's not peaty, not fruity. Honeyed might be close. Herbal too. It's just, lowland.

As a non-frequent scotch drinker for now, I've hat the Glenmo 18 and loved it. Seems like a nice balance between a 'safe' whiskey and one that'd be appreciated. It was a favorite among most in attendance at a GlenMo tasting a while back. There were some more expensive expressions there but the 18 was my overall favorite.

And, of course, there are always those who turn up their noses at Johnnie Walker, which is absurd. It's okay to not like a particular blend, or to prefer single malts, or whatever. Your taste buds, your choice. But to insult the blends as somehow genetically inferior to the single malts is absurd, since Johnny Walker is made from them. If I recall correctly, Macallan figures heavily in all the JW blends, with Talisker a close second and a major component of the Double Black and the Green Label. And since the blends all consist of dozens of sources, it's statistically likely that anyone's particular favorite single malt is in there somewhere.
A few weeks ago I was at a herf drinking some really good scotch, and some yahoo tagalong started waxing poetic about how single malt is scotch in its most pure, historic form. The boy obviously didn't know his whiskey history...or science.

Nice Pudgy deal at the Sis but I must resist.

Flip, I think the most important question here is, what does your son currently enjoy?? Being new or not really knowing is a valid answer, too. So much variety that you could give him the most expensive Islay scotch on the market and he'll hate it if he doesn't care for that style.
last couple of bottles I've given to him and
my daughters husband, they all enjoyed. but I am note sure
if Seth is still at Shoppers vineyard(he used to recommend good scotch).
One bottle was Monkey Shoulder, others were a Johnie Walker sampler,
he does like the platinum and the blue.
I laugh at snobs of any kind. If it's good, who the hell cares what it is? Funny how in America, blended batches are ok (though I know they're not quite the same as scotch blends), but "independent bottlers" are shunned. Blends not cool with scotches, but "bottlers", or non-distiller producers, are common from what I understand.
If you like it, drink it. If not, don't. Simple as that. This goes back to my comment when I first logged in today, generally people like this just regurgitate what they hear elsewhere. Got lots of bourbon drinkers in our group that turn away anything "sourced". If it's better than some shit that isn't, why turn it away?

Picked up a Garage Brewing Marshmallow Milk Stout over the weekend. Sounded like ST Creme Brûlée but not quite as sweet. Intended to drink it Sunday but whiskey got to me first.
say Joe, (and any other of the scotch drinking cognoscenti!)
take a look at this link, of different single malt / malt blends scotches.
My son's 31st birthday is coming up. advice would be helpful. Either one killer
under $200, or a combo of different tastes like a home grown sampler

At 31, I would not think he is too set in his scotch ways yet, and a single high priced offering may not be fully appreciated. Now I'm just listing general names, but of course each has different ages and different cask methods used. I would probably go with the basic offering, 12 year is fine, maybe a 15 if on sale.
Highland: Macallan, Dalmore, Highland Park, Dalwhinnie or Glenmorange
Lowland: Glenkinchie
Islay: Laphroaig, Ardbeg, Lagavulin
Speyside: Glenrothes, Abelour, Balvenie (Glenfiddich and Glenlivet are most common, but are fine light offerings)
how do these look:
http://www.shoppersvineyard.com/store/pc/GLENMORANGIE-18YR-SINGLE-MALT-SCOTCH-WHISKY-312p19805.htm (http://www.shoppersvineyard.com/store/pc/GLENMORANGIE-18YR-SINGLE-MALT-SCOTCH-WHISKY-312p19805.htm)

Dalmore is a fine offering, Glenmorangie is a solid choice as well, but the 18 year/cost may not be appreciated fully. Then again, it's a gift and he will enjoy.

A glass of Highland Park 18.

"There once was an indecisive man stranded in the middle of Scotland. From where he stood, he could set off in any direction and find good Scotch: straight south to the light, fresh Lowlands; straight north to the fruity Highlands; up to the caramel-y region of Speyside in the northeast; or down to peaty, seaweed-y Islay off the southwest coast. Just before he could set off, though, a man behind him asked him to move his shopping cart. Because he was just standing there, blocking the aisle in the liquor store."

Seems like a good rule from my limited understanding of the regions.
I know nothing about the Lowland scotches, so will be interested to hear what you think of the Auchentoshan.
I need to start taking some notes at these tastings, especially the ones where most everything is new to me. I'll definitely report back tomorrow.
IMO lowlands are the most challenging.
In what sense? To find, to characterize, or to enjoy?
To characterize. I think the lowland style is unmistakable yet difficult to define. It's not peaty, not fruity. Honeyed might be close. Herbal too. It's just, lowland.
Well, too much has been made of the whole "regional" thing in any case. It's somehow human nature to look for the "voodoo" that makes, say, a great Islay scotch. The fact is, politics and commercial concerns had more to do with regional differences than unique craftsmanship ever did.

Maybe among the biggies but the little distilleries maintain a sense of region. I do agree that you don't need to be on Islay for a great peated whisky though. There's Benriach Curiositas, Ledaig, Longrow...

I do a lot of scotch tasting and research. PA is the worst for booze so when I order online it has to be worth it. I just guess the free ship codes.

So you are the go to for Scotch as well as free shipping codes?? Need to leave an address where we can summon you when needed...or will a light in the sky work? Always need to keep stock of where the valued resources are.
I do a lot of scotch tasting and research. PA is the worst for booze so when I order online it has to be worth it. I just guess the free ship codes.
Well, I appreciate the input. There's a lot of good information in here today. Not sure if that's a good thing for Tuesday's "sub-standards", but it's appreciated nonetheless.
Now, what's the damn code! ;D jk

Seems like a good rule from my limited understanding of the regions.
I know nothing about the Lowland scotches, so will be interested to hear what you think of the Auchentoshan.
I need to start taking some notes at these tastings, especially the ones where most everything is new to me. I'll definitely report back tomorrow.
IMO lowlands are the most challenging.
In what sense? To find, to characterize, or to enjoy?
To characterize. I think the lowland style is unmistakable yet difficult to define. It's not peaty, not fruity. Honeyed might be close. Herbal too. It's just, lowland.

Nice Pudgy deal at the Sis but I must resist.
These are also on the .bid site. 10 boxes. Currently $67 to get in... Although, after factoring for shipping, $75 isn't bad... and no 'watching' necessary.
Haven't seen from Scott, but if anyone else was interested in the Tatuaje lancero sampler, .bid has those as well. Current buy in at $61... Ends in 8+ hrs.

My rooster azz is dragging, 11-1/2 hours on the road today but made it home. Probably my last cross country drive unless I got 4-5 days to do it.
And I ain't taking the warden in the same car either.

Hey Dave, too Damn tired going to bed. 4 days of drinking and dancing with the significantly younger girls and 4-1/2 days of driving. Too old for that chit. Best thing is the warden is not talking to me.

Not the snob type but I don't drink blended scotch cause I don't like it and it makes me hurt the next day.

Easy to get spoiled out in short sleeves enjoying a cigar. I can suffer like this a bit longer.

According to my phone it's down to 37° now and I'm out in just a sweatshirt but it's really not bad at all. GFY about the short sleeved shirt though.

About an inch left to this cigar and now I'm freezing. Plus I need to go inside and get ready for the flip.
