National Margarita Day – February 22, 2019

Every February 22, we come together for National Margarita Day to pay homage to our favorite celebratory cocktail. The margarita — triple sec, tequila, and lime juice — was created in 1938 in Mexico and is widely considered the official drink of having fun. It’s always 5 o’clock somewhere, and that’s never more true than on National Margarita Day. So get out a shaker, pull out your frozen margarita machine, or head to your local watering hole and order a margarita. Up, on ice, or on the rocks, you can’t go wrong.

A Rhode Island visitor who celebrated outdoor dining with her family at Brownwood was arrested within hours of posting festive photos on Facebook.

Carissa Marie Fratus, 35, of Johnston, R.I., on Monday night posted photos of her and an aunt and uncle dining at a restaurant at Paddock Square. The photos elicited comments like “so jealous” and “party animals” from her friends.

However, the night took a different turn when Fratus’ black Kia was pulled over at 12:38 a.m. Tuesday at the Burnsed Recreation Center after she was caught traveling at 48 miles per hour in a 35 mph zone on Morse Boulevard, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

Fratus claimed she did not have her driver’s license with her and provided the name and Social Security number of another woman. A K-9 unit arrived on the scene and the dog alerted on the vehicle, indicating the likely presence of drugs.

A search turned up a purse which contained Fratus’ Rhode Island driver’s license. She told deputies she had not given them the license because she knew it was suspended. A check confirmed it has been suspended since 2017.

The search also turned up a vape pen that contained a dark oil that tested positive for THC.

Fratus was arrested on charges of driving while license suspended, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug equipment and providing a false name to law enforcement.

She was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center and released after posting $4,500 bond.

A stressed out snowbird from Maryland was arrested after causing a crash near Pinellas Plaza in The Villages.

Wildwood police responded to the scene of the accident at about 6 p.m. Tuesday on County Road 466A at Powell Road, where a black Lexus driven by 52-year-old Elmira Ivanova Holland of North Potomac, Md. struck the rear end of another vehicle stopped at a red light. Another motorist told police he had swerved out of the way to avoid being struck by Holland’s Lexus. A second witness said the eastbound Lexus nearly crossed over the center line and hit her vehicle, according to an arrest report from the Wildwood Police Department.

Holland appeared to be “confused.” She told police she was “very stressed” because “this is a new area to her.”

Officers suspected Holland had been drinking but she initially refused to participate in field sobriety exercises. When she changed her mind and took part in the exercises, she failed. She agreed to provide a breath sample, but would not or could not meet the volume required for a sample.

She was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence and booked at the Sumter County Detention Center. She was released after posting $1,000 bond.

A man was arrested after allegedly pawning a woman’s $1,000 diamond solitaire ring for $50.

Lester William Savage, 57, of Fruitland Park, was booked Monday night at the Lake County Jail on charges of grand theft, burglary, dealing in stolen property and providing fraudulent information to a pawn broker. Bond was set at $22,000.

The Ohio native removed the ring from a small red safe in a dresser drawer in a home he shares with a woman described as his “roommate” in an arrest report from the Fruitland Park Police Department. Savage admitted he had pawned the ring for $50 at Value Pawn in Leesburg. The woman went to Value Pawn and paid $62.50 to get her ring back.

A man was arrested after battling a woman over cigars during a gathering Monday afternoon in Wildwood.

Glenn Ladale Thompson, 41, was taken into custody on a felony charge of battery after he allegedly pushed a woman on the side of her face after she refused to give him any of her cigars at about 3 p.m. at a residence in the 600 block of Second Street, according to an arrest report from the Wildwood Police Department. He attempted to bear hug the woman and take her to the ground but another man stopped him. Thompson then left the gathering.

The woman told police that prior to the attack, Thompson was being “rude and disrespectful” to her and others at the gathering.

Police found Thompson in the area of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and York Street and took him into custody. He was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center on $2,000 bond.

Thompson was arrested in 2016 after an alleged attack on his girlfriend as she slept. He was arrested in 2014 on charges of trespassing and cimininal mischief.

Today is Friday, Feb. 22, the 53rd day of 2019.

Today’s Highlight in History:

On Feb. 22, 1997, scientists in Scotland announced they had succeeded in cloning an adult mammal, producing a lamb named “Dolly.” (Dolly, however, was later put down after a short life marred by premature aging and disease.)

On this date:
In 1630, English colonists in the Massachusetts Bay Colony first sampled popcorn brought to them by a Native American named Quadequina for their Thanksgiving celebration.
In 1732 (New Style date), the first president of the United States, George Washington, was born in Westmoreland County in the Virginia Colony.
In 1862, Jefferson Davis, already the provisional president of the Confederacy, was inaugurated for a six-year term following his election in November 1861.
In 1909, the Great White Fleet, a naval task force sent on a round-the-world voyage by President Theodore Roosevelt, returned after more than a year at sea.
In 1935, it became illegal for airplanes to fly over the White House.
In 1959, the inaugural Daytona 500 race was held; although Johnny Beauchamp was initially declared the winner, the victory was later awarded to Lee Petty.
In 1965, former Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter, 82, died in Washington D.C.
In 1967, more than 25,000 U.S. and South Vietnamese troops launched Operation Junction City, aimed at smashing a Vietcong stronghold near the Cambodian border. (Although the communists were driven out, they later returned.)
In 1974, Pakistan officially recognized Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan).
In 1980, the “Miracle on Ice” took place in Lake Placid, New York, as the United States Olympic hockey team upset the Soviets, 4-3. (The U.S. team went on to win the gold medal.)
In 1984, David Vetter, a 12-year-old Texas boy who’d spent most of his life in a plastic bubble because he had no immunity to disease, died 15 days after being removed from the bubble for a bone-marrow transplant.
In 1987, pop artist Andy Warhol died at a New York City hospital at age 58.

Ten years ago: “Slumdog Millionaire” won best picture and seven other Academy Awards; the late Heath Ledger won the best supporting actor Oscar for “The Dark Knight.” A gas explosion in a coal mine in northern China killed more than 70 miners.

Five years ago: Retired Pope Benedict XVI joined Pope Francis in a ceremony in St. Peter’s Basilica creating the cardinals who will elect their successor in an unprecedented blending of papacies past, present and future. Ukraine’s former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko (YOOL’-yah tee-moh-SHEN’-koh) left prison as her arch foe, President Viktor Yanukovych, decamped to the country’s east, vowing to remain in power. At the Sochi Olympics, Marit Bjoergen became the most decorated female Winter Olympian in history, winning her sixth career gold medal by leading a Norwegian sweep in the women’s 30-kilometer cross-country race. Mario Matt of Austria won the men’s slalom to become at age 34 the oldest Alpine champion in Olympic history.

One year ago: Defying his supporters in the National Rifle Association, President Donald Trump said the nation should keep assault rifles out of the hands of anyone under 21. Authorities announced that the armed officer who was on duty at the Parkland, Florida school where a shooter killed 17 people never went into the building to engage the gunman. A grand jury indicted Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens (GRY’-tenz) on a felony charge of invasion of privacy for allegedly taking a compromising photo of a woman with whom he had an affair in 2015; Greitens responded that he made a mistake but committed no crime. (He would resign on June 1 while facing potential impeachment over allegations of sexual and political misconduct.) The U.S. women’s hockey team won the gold medal at the Winter Olympics in South Korea, beating Canada 3-2 after a shootout tiebreaker.

1986 The People Power Revolution begins in the Philippines
The nonviolent campaign resulted in the fall of President Ferdinand Marcos and the restoration of the country's democracy.

1983 The play “Moose Murders” flops spectacularly on Broadway
According to critic Frank Rich, “a visit to Moose Murders is what will separate the connoisseurs of Broadway disaster from mere dilettantes for many moons to come.”

1948 Czechoslovakia becomes a communist state following a coup d'etat
The country became a parliamentary republic following the non-violent “Velvet Revolution” in 1989 and was split into the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic in 1993.

Almost all saltwater mounts today are fiberglass replicas of the actual fish.  They take pictures and measurements then release the fish.

Shows what I know about game fishing.  I plan on eating what I catch.  Best fishing I ever had was in Bermuda....15 minutes out to the reef and a wide variety of species available.  Took some back to the hotel, left the rest with the skipper and had the most amazing meal ever.

In reality with the exception of swordfish billfish are not even good for eating, very bloody meat.  Personally I would vote to outlaw the killing of all billfish.

Good morning Daves, Dean, and Mr. Mayor.  Inefficient operations here this week.  Two guys on vacation, one on medical leave (back surgery), and one got into a car wreck yesterday afternoon.  Hopefully they'll all be back on Monday.  Sheesh.

One of the Sailfish (biggest one) caught this week on the boat we are using.

* the fish was released alive immediately after photo taken
I bet it would cost a mint to have one of those mounted and sent back to the states.
Took some back to the hotel, left the rest with the skipper and had the most amazing meal ever.
what fishing I do is with ultralites with 4# test line.

Good morning, Dave and Dean. Can't believe Friday is finally here. But then again, who am I telling?
morning Tony. not sure what you're talking about. just another Monday here.
The last two weeks have been brutal. I think I'm closer to digging my way out. I see a bit of light and I'm reaching towards it.
More likely an oncoming train.
Either way, I'm reaching for it.

(Gray News) – Robert Kraft, the billionaire owner of the New England Patriots, is facing two counts of soliciting another to commit prostitution, according to a report from WPTV.

Jupiter Police Chief Daniel Kerr confirmed he will be arrested and said there is video evidence.
The active warrant is being handled by the state attorney’s office, TC Palm reported.

Kraft is among the 25 people who will be charged by Jupiter Police.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft has been named as one of those involved in a prostitution sting in Florida, but he’s far from the only one involved, and he may not be the most famous person involved.

Adam Schefter said on ESPN that Kraft isn’t the most famous person — there’s someone else whose name hasn’t surfaced yet who’s better known than Kraft.
