Happy Tuesday! In between insults we'll occasionally discuss cigars.  Join in and perhaps learn something along the way. Warning: don't proceed if you have thin skin but don't be afraid to post either... And welcome aboard!

Good morning, Rick. I'm also not happy about waking up and finding out we lost again to a team that's under .500. I'm not appreciating the slide.

Not 100%. Some folks are already going in one day per week. I may be able to start in October but it will not be more than two days per week.

It's looking like 2022.

Right? Back in the day, if we went over $100, I'd think something was wrung up wrong. Yesterday, we spent $280 and it was a pretty average week. And yet my older 2 will definitely not have anything to eat all week. The younger one has a bit more of an expanded palette, so she's never lacking for something to eat.

Case in point - I just went upstairs, and she's eating a bagel with cream cheese, with slices of strawberry on top. So maybe her palette is a little TOO expanded? She says it's good, so who knows.

Roster cutdown day in the NFL, where teams have to get down to 53 players. For once, it looks like the Browns are gonna have some tough decisions to make.

I don't understand how they didn't increase that number with the expanded season.  Half the teams are playing the waterboys by the end of the season as it is.

I imagine it's all about the dollars. The owners have already managed to add an additional week of regular season revenue without having to increase salary, why would they add extra players that they'll have to pay more for?

Today is Tuesday, Aug. 31, the 243rd day of 2021.
There are 122 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History:

On Aug. 31, 1980, Poland’s Solidarity labor movement was born with an agreement signed in Gdansk (guh-DANSK’) that ended a 17-day-old strike.

On this date:

In 1886, an earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 7.3 devastated Charleston, South Carolina, killing at least 60 people, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

In 1939, the first issue of Marvel Comics, featuring the Human Torch, was published by Timely Publications in New York.

In 1972, at the Munich (MYOO’-nik) Summer Olympics, American swimmer Mark Spitz won his fourth and fifth gold medals in the 100-meter butterfly and 800-meter freestyle relay; Soviet gymnast Olga Korbut won gold medals in floor exercise and the balance beam.

In 1986, 82 people were killed when an Aeromexico jetliner and a small private plane collided over Cerritos, California. The Soviet passenger ship Admiral Nakhimov collided with a merchant vessel in the Black Sea, causing both to sink; up to 448 people reportedly died.

In 1992, white separatist Randy Weaver surrendered to authorities in Naples, Idaho, ending an 11-day siege by federal agents that had claimed the lives of Weaver’s wife, son and a deputy U.S. marshal. (Weaver was acquitted of murder and all other charges in connection with the confrontation; he was convicted of failing to appear for trial on firearms charges and was sentenced to 18 months in prison but given credit for 14 months he’d already served.)

In 1994, the Irish Republican Army declared a cease-fire. Russia officially ended its military presence in the former East Germany and the Baltics after half a century.

In 1996, three adults and four children drowned when their vehicle rolled into John D. Long Lake in Union, South Carolina; they had gone to see a monument to the sons of Susan Smith, who had drowned the two boys in Oct. 1994.

In 1997, Prince Charles brought Princess Diana home for the last time, escorting the body of his former wife to a Britain that was shocked, grief-stricken and angered by her death in a Paris traffic accident earlier that day.

In 2005, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin reported “a significant number of dead bodies in the water” following Hurricane Katrina; Nagin ordered virtually the entire police force to abandon search-and-rescue efforts and to instead stop increasingly hostile thieves.

In 2010, President Barack Obama ended the U.S. combat mission in Iraq, declaring no victory after seven years of bloodshed and telling those divided over the war in his country and around the world: “It is time to turn the page.”

In 2018, Aretha Franklin, the “Queen of Soul,” was laid to rest after an eight-hour funeral at a Detroit church, where guests included Bill and Hillary Clinton, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson.

In 2019, a gunman carried out a shooting rampage that stretched ten miles between the Texas communities of Midland and Odessa, leaving seven people dead before police killed the gunman outside a movie theater in Odessa.

Ten years ago: The Wartime Contracting Commission issued a report saying the U.S. had lost billions of dollars to waste and fraud in Iraq and Afghanistan and stood to repeat that in future wars without big changes in how the government awarded and managed contracts for battlefield support and reconstruction projects.

Five years ago: On Mexican soil for the first time as the Republican presidential nominee, a firm but measured Donald Trump defended the right of the United States to build a massive border wall along its southern flank, standing up for the centerpiece of his immigration plan during a joint press conference with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto. The first commercial flight between the United States and Cuba in more than a half century, a JetBlue Airbus A320, landed in the central city of Santa Clara, re-establishing regular air service severed at the height of the Cold War. Brazil’s Senate voted to remove President Dilma Rousseff from office. (Rousseff was accused of breaking fiscal laws in her management of the federal budget.)

One year ago: At a rally in Pittsburgh, Democrat Joe Biden resoundingly condemned violent protesters and called for their prosecution; he accused President Donald Trump of causing the divisions that had ignited the violence. Trump reiterated that he blamed radical troublemakers who he said were stirred up and backed by Biden. The U.S. Open, the first Grand Slam tennis event in nearly six months, began in New York with no fans in attendance because of the pandemic. The family of John Thompson announced that the former Georgetown University basketball coach had died at the age of 78; he was the first Black coach to lead a team to the NCAA men’s championship. Police in Rwanda announced the arrest on terrorism charges of Paul Rusesabagina, who’d been portrayed in the film “Hotel Rwanda” as a hero who saved the lives of more than 1,200 people from the country’s 1994 genocide. The Federal Aviation Administration said it had granted Amazon approval to deliver packages by drones; Amazon said it was still testing and flying the drones.

@razgueado, I saw this music quiz posted by one of my Spanish colleagues. It's all in Spanish but I don't believe it'll be a problem for you. It's a bit time consuming but could be interesting. I'll post the link shortly...

Raz Over/Under is 7
4 for me. Morning, ShortBdayListDave.
Raz will probably kill it with the top of that list.
Sheesh.  11.
Like I said. Morning, KnowEmAllRaz.
Yeah, yeah.  Look, I'm a serious guitar player, and I started playing in the summer of 1978, when I was 13.  So I'm going to know Buddy Holly, and that means I'm going to know who the drummer of the Crickets is.  I'm also going to know who Rudy Schenker and Glenn Tilbrook are, and I've played "Brown Eyed Girl" so many freaking times I have nightmares about it, so Van Morrison.

But I didn't start as a guitarist, I started on piano, studying classical music...and I also watched Sesame Street as a child, so Itzhak Perlman.  I'm Gen-X, so I remember the 80's, which means I know Debbie Gibson.  And I was trying to make it in the music biz in the 90's, so I know who Jeff Russo is (not to mention Emerson Hart).

Then you've got the actors - Richard Gere and Chris Tucker.  Those are gimmes.  But I'm a major Dune geek, so I'm also aware who Stephen Henderson is because I've been debating his casting as Thufir Hawatt in the upcoming Dune movie with my friends who are Dune geeks.

I know Edwin Moses because I've always been fascinated by the hurdles since as a toddler I watched track practice at the high school behind my grandparents house that my mom had graduated from.  And the 1984 Olympics were only two years after the movie Chariots of Fire came out, with that major hit by synthesist Vangelis. Soooo....yeah.

There it is.

Sounds like fun.  As long as it doesn't ask me too much about Conjunto.  I love the music, but I know few of its stars.

I had to go back to the list wondering, "how in the world did I miss Debbie Gibson?" Assumed Deborah Gibson was someone else, since agencies are usually pretty tight with their rules about people using the same name as someone else who's already established. Which is how we know Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly, since at the time he started working, there was already a working actor named Michael Fox, so he had to add the middle initial to distinguish himself.

But his middle name is actually Andrew, and he didn't want to be known as "Michael, A Fox." So he used J because he couldn't think of any way that could be twisted into something silly or demeaning.

And yes, I know this because I was cursed with comparisons to Michael J Fox from the advent of Alex P Keaton.  Yes, I was a Republican when I was in high school.

I think it would kill us. We need fodder for trash talking.
Lol, you're probably right about that.
Work isn't helping much.
No it's not. Feels like I spend more time here than at home
Good morning, Rick. I'm also not happy about waking up and finding out we lost again to a team that's under .500. I'm not appreciating the slide.
Yes I agree. I'm looking forward to football. Wager for week 1?
Certainly! I mean, I'm scared of the Bills but what kind of fan would I be if I didn't back my team? How about a 5er of your favorite connie?
Yeah that sounds good. We won't go top shelf but let's have fun with it.

NEW
Diesel
Limited Edition
San Marzano Sunday Gravy

Handcrafted at Tabacalera AJ Fernandez in Esteli, Nicaragua, and blended by AJ and Justin Andrews, Diesel Sunday Gravy is the first launch in this seasonal-release cigar series with a mouth-watering blend called San Marzano.

Inspired by the millions of articles and arguments online over who has the best recipe for Sunday Gravy, we’re cooking up a cigar that leaves you wanting seconds, and maybe even thirds.

“AJ’S PROCESS OF BLENDING CIGARS ALWAYS REMINDS ME OF HOW MY MOM COOKED HER SUNDAY SAUCE..."

“AJ’s process of blending cigars always reminds me of how my mom cooked her Sunday sauce slowly over a low flame, knowing she had the luxury of being able to cook all day on a Sunday to get it just right.” - Justin Andrews

Diesel Sunday Gravy San Marzano features a bodacious Ecaudoran wrapper that’s chock-full of bold, full-bodied greatness. But, on the inside is where the magic really happens. The combination of Nicaraguan Esteli and Nicaraguan Jalapa tobaccos, something only a blending-mastermind like AJ can muster up.

“It’s rich, deep and complex, and like a good Sunday gravy, AJ’s cigars are always worth the wait.” - Justin Andrews

San Marzano will be available nationally from July 2021 - September 2021, so make sure you get your hands on it while you can.

San Marzano 6 X 54
BODY: Medium - Full
WRAPPER: Ecuadorian Habano
BINDER: Esteli Nicaragua
FILLER: Jalapa Nicaragua
TASTING NOTES: Earthy, Nutty, Tobacco, Sweet

Massachusetts passed a law prohibiting the sale of infused or flavored cigars. Therefore, Dave's son who prefers those waits until Dad comes to town to smuggle them in. By the way, recreational pot is completely legal in Massachusetts.

Thank you for the clarification. Doesn't make any sense.
I have family down state who take the trip to Massachusetts to the dispensaries. I was offered gummies but I prefer the more traditional methods

My day went to crap. I'll catch up from home. See whoever is around later.
Sounds like the day I'm having.
Mine got better when I got home. Hope your night goes better Raz.
It's just work.  They pay me for it.

Starting off with an Oy cigar.   First chance to sit.
Did you pack any smokes for your trip? I know your d-i-l isn't a big fan so perhaps this will be a smoke-free few days?
Hell yea I did.  Plus some contraband infused MA illegal cigars for Paul.
I'm confused
Massachusetts passed a law prohibiting the sale of infused or flavored cigars. Therefore, Dave's son who prefers those waits until Dad comes to town to smuggle them in. By the way, recreational pot is completely legal in Massachusetts.
And when returning to SC from MA, I have to bring the other son that.  (when driving)

How bad is it for the South Carolina Gamecocks?  They've tapped a grad assistant as starting QB.

He's going to "summer camp" here.
