Today in History

Today is Sunday, Nov. 18, the 322nd day of 2018. There are 43 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History:

On Nov. 18, 1978, U.S. Rep. Leo J. Ryan, D-Calif., and four others were killed in Jonestown, Guyana, by members of the Peoples Temple; the killings were followed by a night of mass murder and suicide by more than 900 cult members.
On this date:
In 1883, the United States and Canada adopted a system of Standard Time zones.
In 1916, the World War I Battle of the Somme pitting British and French forces against German troops ended inconclusively after 4 1/2 months of bloodshed.
In 1928, Walt Disney’s first sound-synchronized animated cartoon, “Steamboat Willie” starring Mickey Mouse, premiered in New York.
In 1936, Germany and Italy recognized the Spanish government of Francisco Franco.
In 1959, “Ben-Hur,” the Biblical-era spectacle starring Charlton Heston, had its world premiere in New York.
In 1966, U.S. Roman Catholic bishops issued a Pastoral Statement on Penance and Abstinence, which did away with the rule against eating meat on Fridays outside of Lent.
In 1976, Spain’s parliament approved a bill to establish a democracy after 37 years of dictatorship.
In 1985, the comic strip “Calvin and Hobbes,” created by Bill Watterson, was first published. (The strip ran for 10 years.)
In 1987, the congressional Iran-Contra committees issued their final report, saying President Ronald Reagan bore “ultimate responsibility” for wrongdoing by his aides. A fire at London King’s Cross railway station claimed 31 lives.
In 1991, Shiite (SHEE’-eyet) Muslim kidnappers in Lebanon freed Anglican Church envoy Terry Waite and Thomas Sutherland, the American dean of agriculture at the American University of Beirut.
In 2003, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled 4-to-3 that the state constitution guaranteed gay couples the right to marry.
In 2004, Britain outlawed fox hunting in England and Wales.

Ten years ago: Detroit’s Big Three automakers pleaded with Congress for a $25 billion lifeline, warning of a national economic catastrophe should they collapse. Belgium-based InBev SA formed the world’s largest brewer with its $52 billion takeover of U.S.-based Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc. Boston’s Dustin Pedroia won the American League MVP award, becoming the first second baseman to earn the honor in nearly a half-century.

Five years ago: Toronto’s city council voted to strip scandal-plagued Mayor Rob Ford of many of his powers following a heated debate in which he knocked over a city councilor. NASA’s robotic explorer, Maven, rocketed toward Mars on a quest to unravel the ancient mystery of the red planet’s radical climate change.

One year ago: Large crowds of demonstrators turned Zimbabwe’s capital into a carnival ground, showing disdain for President Robert Mugabe and urging him to quit immediately; Mugabe was now powerless and had been placed under house arrest by the military command. After heading Northern Ireland’s Sinn Fein party for more than 30 years, Gerry Adams announced that he was stepping down; he’d been known around the world as the face of the Irish republican movement as it shifted from violence to peace.

No. 2 Clemson overcomes slow start to beat Duke 35-6

No. 2 Clemson's 35-6 win against Duke on Saturday was historic as it was the Tigers' 51st win for the senior class.
The 51 wins is a new school and ACC record surpassing Clemson's 50 wins by last year's senior class.
"To be the only group to have won 51 games in four years is incredible," Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said during a postgame interview. "They've made my job easy."
The Tigers have opened a season 11-0 for the fourth time in program history, joining 11-0 starts in 1948, 1981 and 2015. The Tigers have also won the first 11 games of a season for the second time under Swinney.

And the lawyers point is?

Rudy Giuliani’s divorce is getting ugly: Wife’s lawyer claims he has spent $12,000 on cigars since April.

$12K doesn't seem unreasonable.

Not bad....he must be buying some seconds....

An attorney for Judith Giuliani reportedly told a New York court on Wednesday the onetime mayor, now attorney to President Trump, is claiming poverty while spending lavishly. The lawyer for the former Judith Nathan (it’s her third divorce, too) laid out some eye-popping figures: $12,000 on cigars? $7,000 on fountain pens?

Court filings allege that Rudy Giuliani, 74, has blown through almost $900,000 since April, a sum that includes $286,532 on his alleged mistress, Maria Rosa Ryan; $447,938 “for his own enjoyment”; and $165,165 on travel, according to the local NBC affiliate in New York.

Tirador Ramos Quality Cigars is proud and extremely excited to announce the unveiling of its brand Biely and Senito to the US Market. Gerardo Arsenio Ramos Jr., son of famed Master Blender Arsenio Ramos, has expertly crafted a selection of premium cigars featuring a rich Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, Nicaraguan binder, and Nicaraguan fillers.

Integrity and utmost attention to quality are imbedded in all its products to proudly showcase the legacy of the Tirador Ramos family traditions

The Blend:

With a variety of Cuban-seed tobaccos aged for 3 years, we obtained the Habano wrapper & binder grown in Ecuador, and the Corojo & Criollo filler harvested in Estelí, Condega and Jalapa Nicaragua.

The result of these blends is a harmony of flavors that carry tones of cocoa and hints of spices complemented by notes of cedar with a touch of sweetness.

Cigar Profile:

Robusto 5 x 50 || Toro 6 x 52 || Torpedo 61/8 x 52 || Churchill 7½ x 50 || Lancero 7½ x 38

Wrapper: Habano || Body Strength: Medium || Binder: Habano || Filler: Corojo & Criollo

Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse turns 90
Heather Monahan·4 hours ago
This weekend marks 90 years of the world's most beloved mouse.

Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse made his debut on Nov. 18, 1928 when "Steamboat Willie" premiered at New York's Colony Theatre.

According to the Walt Disney Family Museum , the success of "Steamboat Willie" came on the heels of two Mickey Mouse failures. The first Mickey cartoon that Walt Disney actually competed was called "Plane Crazy." The second was "The Gallopin' Gaucho." Both premiered as screen testings in early 1928 but were never distributed.

Mickey's "official" birthday was determined in 1978 by Dave Smith, the founder of the Disney Archives. Before that, Walt Disney had previously stated his creation's birthday was Oct. 1, 1928.

Twenty years after Mickey made his debut, Walt Disney wrote in an essay that the character "popped out of my mind onto a drawing pad...on a train ride from Manhattan to Hollywood at a time when the business fortunes of my brother Roy and myself were at lowest ebb."

Not if everyone got one.  Now if it were flawed in some way, with a misspelling for example, then you got something.
