for daughter's Family weekend at the college. Felt well rested, just didn't feel like rushing into work.

I'd go with you there if these stores made it completely optional for employees to work on the holiday. But they don't, and turning down the "opportunity" is a sure way to shorten your tenure at those organizations, then I advocate punishing them in the marketplace.
