Today is Friday, Jan. 13, the 13th day of 2017. There are 352 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On Jan. 13, 1967, the Rolling Stones' double-A sided single "Let's Spend the Night Together" and "Ruby Tuesday" was released in the United Kingdom by Decca Records. (It was released the following day in the United States on the London label).

On this date:

In 1733, James Oglethorpe and some 120 English colonists arrived at Charleston, South Carolina, while en route to settle in present-day Georgia.

In 1794, President George Washington approved a measure adding two stars and two stripes to the American flag, following the admission of Vermont and Kentucky to the Union. (The number of stripes was later reduced to the original 13.)

In 1898, Emile Zola's famous defense of Capt. Alfred Dreyfus, "J'accuse," (zhah-KOOZ') was published in Paris.

In 1915, a magnitude-7 earthquake centered in Avezzano, Italy, claimed some 30,000 lives.

In 1941, a new law went into effect granting Puerto Ricans U.S. birthright citizenship. Novelist and poet James Joyce died in Zurich, Switzerland, less than a month before his 59th birthday.

In 1962, comedian Ernie Kovacs died in a car crash in west Los Angeles 10 days before his 43rd birthday.

In 1978, former Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey died in Waverly, Minnesota, at age 66.

In 1982, an Air Florida 737 crashed into Washington, D.C.'s 14th Street Bridge and fell into the Potomac River while trying to take off during a snowstorm, killing a total of 78 people; four passengers and a flight attendant survived.

In 1987, West German police arrested Mohammed Ali Hamadi, a suspect in the 1985 hijacking of a TWA jetliner. (Although convicted and sentenced to life, Hamadi was paroled by Germany in Dec. 2005; he is on the FBI's Most Wanted Terrorists list.)

In 1990, L. Douglas Wilder of Virginia became the nation's first elected black governor as he took the oath of office in Richmond.

In 1997, seven black soldiers were awarded the Medal of Honor for World War II valor; the lone survivor of the group, former Lt. Vernon Baker, received his medal from President Bill Clinton at the White House.

In 2014, a shooting at a Wesley Chapel, Florida, movie theater left Chad Oulson, 43, dead; retired Tampa police captain Curtis Reeves, 71, is accused of killing Oulson during what authorities said was an argument over Oulson's texting.

Ten years ago: Nine people were killed in an apartment building fire in Huntington, West Virginia. Two miners were killed when a roof collapsed inside the Brooks Run Mining Co.'s Cucumber coal mine in McDowell County, West Virginia. The North Carolina state attorney general's office agreed to take over the sexual assault case against three Duke University lacrosse players at the request of embattled Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong (all three players were later exonerated).

Five years ago: The Italian luxury liner Costa Concordia ran aground off the Tuscan island of Giglio and flipped onto its side; 32 people were killed. Myanmar freed some of its most famous political prisoners, sparking jubilation among their supporters. Veteran TV newsman Richard Threlkeld, 74, was killed in a car crash on Long Island, New York.

One year ago: Less than a day after 10 U.S. Navy sailors were detained in Iran when their boats drifted into Iranian waters, they and their vessels were back safely with the American fleet. Defense Secretary Ash Carter laid out broad plans to defeat Islamic State militants and retake the group's key power centers in Iraq and Syria. The Al Jazeera America cable news network said it was shutting down two and a half years after its launch. Three winning tickets split a world-record $1.6 billion Powerball jackpot.

Friday the 13th Today!

According to phobia specialist (and coiner of the term paraskevidekatriaphobia) Dr. Donald Dossey, it's the most widespread superstition in the United States today. Some people refuse to go to work on Friday the 13th; some won't dine in restaurants; many wouldn't think of setting a wedding on that date.

Not a bad cigar.  RoMa uses solid tobacco, but flavor profile does not stand out.  The short perfecto vitola that I like in other offerings had burn problems with the WR's that I had.  I would treat it like the Uncle Lee for Room 101.  When the price hits about $3, then I'll buy more.

I'm about half way done with this cigar. I took this photo a little earlier on. Despite the delicate and cracked wrapper and the shitty burn, this is a decent connie. Very flavorful. Vanilla and dried fruits notes. A tiny bit of white pepper on the retrohale. I probably didn't have it stored as well as I should have. It was in my portable humidor. I would definitely revisit this cigar.

It didn't get any prettier as it went along. Please note that I wasn't actually driving while smoking this. Therefore, it wasn't the wind that created this issue.

Ouch...really ought to add some humidification fluid to those humidors...and monitor humidity.  Just think how your cigars would burn and taste then.

Aren't es-ploding cigars because they are too moist? Can't be that because you said they were in a travel humi... which I think would have the opposite effect. Too humid in the car?

I always thought it was a "too dry" issue with the wrapper

I would agree if it was just the wrapper (cracking), but that 2nd pic looks like it is expanding under the wrapper... like it's too moist or hit an overpacked section of filler in the middle.

Another reason could be that the storage was at a much cooler temerature and Tony is sitting in a car that's blasting a max heater while hot-boxing the shit out of it... because he rarely gets to smoke.  :P

I don't know that he could. From my understanding, if he was just sitting in the car, in his own driveway, someone would inevitably poke their head out of the house and tell him he needed to go run some type of errand instead of just sitting there. Now, sitting in his neighbors driveway... that's creepy. lol

I don't keep the portable in the car. And in all fairness, the Big Payback I smoked the other day was stored in the same place.

I actually do have humidification in the portable. Like I mentioned in the previous post, other cigars in there are fine. This Luminosa was in the celo before it was lit.

Ha. Nope. Just looking for the wisdom of folks that are familiar with more labels than me!
Most of the ones I have smoked are really not stellar deals, save for the La Traviata I mentioned, which seems pretty good.

The Hemingway's Tx brought up earlier are a great smoke @$4/stick. I honestly stopped looking when I hit the Laranja deal. Gotta keep it "relatively" in the budget.  ;)

If you let us know a few you like, we can eyeball a few for a deal somewhere. Otherwise, you'll end up getting deals and smoking what we like... which would't be a bad thing necessarily. Haha

Nothing that I have interest in buying.  As for lines that I don't follow, can't really say.  In any case, I don't think there is anything there currently that is a gotta-jump-on-it bargain.
Other than that, some OK offers on CI Clearance, La Palina or LGC's at the Sis, Sub Zero sampler at Smoke Inn may be considered.

Very true.  used to buy the Sol Cubano Cuban Cabinet and even leaving the sleeve on it, the wrapper would disintegrate very quickly if you didn't handle it with kid gloves.

btw, I enjoy the La Traviata as well. Mostly the little ninfas. That was a recommendation from Joe on the CI Banter a ways back. Now, I'd probably go with the Surrogates Cracker Crumbs as a preferred option for relatively the same price range (on sale). When the MCII papi chulos were going on deals, the best being a box of 50 for $60... those where a no brainer.

Cigars I enjoyed around the early 2010s but haven't had lately:
DPG Blue
DPG JJ
RP Sungrown
GH 3 Siglos/3 SLS for a good cheapie knock-around
Camacho Pre-Emgargo
RP 1990 and 92

Some I've enjoyed lately:
La Traviata
Padilla 1932 black
RP Royal Vintage
601 blue
601 green
601 red
AB Tempus
AB Connie
AB Sungrown

Quite a range, really. My tastes probably aren't particularly refined, but there are definitely cigars I like more than others, and some I don't care for. Having had good experience with the GH 3 SLS years ago I bought a sampler recently, and have not been impressed--a little loose, hot burning, uneventful flavor. I enjoyed the Room 101 LMII PC at first, but the last couple have excited me less. I thought I liked the LGC, but bought some wavels and was not entirely excited; I must have had it confused for something different I smoked previously, but will revisit.

Agree'd. Huber seems to put out quality products even if you don't care for the profile. That said, there could always be one line that is manufactured differently that has issues. i.e. Uncle Lee's

Based on that, to possibly broaden your horizon, consider offerings by CLE, EP Carrillo and AJ Fernandez.  They frequently come up in Jams and other offers and are overall pleasant smokes.  Like any line, of course there are some that are great and a few dogs, but overall pleasant cigars.  CI regularly offers AJ items like Diesel, Man o War, Relic, Ave Maria and his independent lines that are a bit more expensive but very enjoyable like San Lotano.

Man, hard for me to offer you much help, that is almost a list of my less than favorite smokes but that does not mean others should think that way at all.  If you like 601's (I do like those)then you might try the LaBomba line.  LaPalina a ththe Sister today should definitely be worth a try and that is a pretty good deal.  Most folks enjoy the AF Hemmingway line and the Page has a few nice deals today.

Just a tip at no charge:  These days Most of the advertised deals and daily deals are not very good deals at all even if they happen to be good cigars.  From time to time the Mash will have a good deal or two on good smokes.

I've been picking them off the FamousBid for @$9-$10 a pack, but if you just want to try, $13.50 may not be too bad without getting into the auction site cost averaging rabbit hole discussed earlier up the thread. If you find you like them and want a larger qty, the same auction has 50/$92 pretty regular. That's only about $10 more than the 50 ninfa's I used to get at CigarPlace.

Anyone had the La Traviata Maduro? Down to only a couple normal LTs left. Contemplating which to buy. Both?  ???

I know Golf likes 'em. He actually bought some from the Page before. Would have to ask him the price...

Ah, I DO like the La Bamba. I'll probably give the LaPalinas a go, then.

If the daily deals are not so good, how do we score good deals? Devil? I was trying with MMAO at CI a few weeks ago and got shot down with a "cold" reply at near Joe prices...  :-\
Usually we stumble up on them here and there and between us we find quite a few and post them here.

Alright. So what are the best deals on the page now????

Is this a trick question?

Ha. Nope. Just looking for the wisdom of folks that are familiar with more labels than me!
Most of the ones I have smoked are really not stellar deals, save for the La Traviata I mentioned, which seems pretty good.

btw, I enjoy the La Traviata as well.
Other option would be taking a look at the auction sites....but they are also dangerous.

...and you could get outbid by someone you "thought" was a friend. AmIRight, Scott?

Deal shopping requires a lot of patience and Free Shipping is a major factor when buying small quantities.

Definitely don't want a humi full of wife.

That's what the container store is for... but do they have anything larger than 44 gallon is the question.  ;)

Hey, Sam... what's for the ride home?
not sure yet.  May try a Rocky Patel Short Run I got in a sampler from Holts.
actually, after i started looking, i did find a Sol Cubano CC and a Gurkha Ancient Warrior.  so now I have a choice.  Any help would be appreciated
Since you did ask, give the Gurkha to Flip and thank him for taking it. :)
Actually the AW is pretty good IMO.  they definitly have their share of dog rockets, but Gurkha has a few that i do like  (blind squirrel and nut theory I guess)

I like the maduro a lot. I like both but would give the edge to the maduro. Bought some recently at a good price from CigarPage.com.

Alright. Got a 10 of the maduro animados on the way. Looks good.

We definitely see them pretty regularly. I'm not a huge CAO fan but that La Trav maddie is one of the exceptions. Also love the Flathead Steel Horse.

Anyone had the La Traviata Maduro? Down to only a couple normal LTs left. Contemplating which to buy. Both?  ???
I like the maduro a lot. I like both but would give the edge to the maduro. Bought some recently at a good price from CigarPage.com.

Alright. Got a 10 of the maduro animados on the way. Looks good.

Add the Brazil, Italia and Amazon to that CAO approval list but I have not tried the horse.

I'd had no experience with a Brazilian cigar until the other day. There was an AB Brazilian in a sampler I got the others in. Not bad.

Ah. Indeed, it is. With Dominican filler. Seems to me the Brazilian wrapper is a little more dark, but Dominican is usually mild, correct? It seems most connies (maybe all connies??) are Dominican?

@Shank... Here's the Holt's email link that was just sent out. I haven't smoked any of these in awhile, but you had a couple on your list. 10/$30 w/free ship.

http://www.holts.com/specials/1-day-flash-sale.html?utm_source=iContact&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=FS011316&utm_content=FS011316 (http://www.holts.com/specials/1-day-flash-sale.html?utm_source=iContact&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=FS011316&utm_content=FS011316)

Awesome. Thank you. I'm not set up with them yet and don't get there emails; I probably should fix that!
This is the part we refer to as "Enabling" just so you know...
It's all about choices - a humi full of cigars or wife.

The former and something fun on the side sounds like the ticket! ;D
And IMFO it only needs to be a small travel humi full.
We're not talking about what is equivalent to what there Tex.

Not all Brazilian tobacco is Maduro cured.

Brazilia and Italia are decent but not on my "buy" list. Have Amazons marinating in the humi but haven't had one yet. Should smoke it soon so I'll know if I should buy more. Can only get those every 3 years.

When we speak of connies, we're referring to the wrapper. They are usually very pale; sometimes called claro. The real deal is from the U.S (Connecticut). Much of that wrapper comes from Ecuador these days. They tend to be milder cigars. Not necessarily Dominican made. Honduran and Nicaraguan too.

I thought the papa was very good! Great looking wrapper with understated band. Nice draw. Burn was sharp and straight. Ash was solid light grey. Very enjoyable flavors... 4.5/5
