I imagine so, she's pretty excited.

She's starting at community college for the first two years, because she doesn't want to build up two years worth of debt for basic classes. After that, she wants to go to Kent State for a degree in video game design.

And she didn't even look at other schools. I even tried to nudge her in that direction, because she had a very good ACT score and would've probably qualified for scholarships or grants in a lot of places, but she was set on getting those first two years out of the way with no money owed. Once she makes up her mind about something, she sticks with it. Also, not a lot of places offer a degree in video game design, as you might imagine.

That's awesome. My daughter got into something called the Stars program which is basically the same concept. She would be about to go to community college for two years and then any state school of her choosing, for free. She hasn't decided yet but it's not looking like she's considering college costs in her factoring.

Today is Thursday, April 18, the 109th day of 2024.
There are 257 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History:

On April 18, 1906, a devastating earthquake struck San Francisco, followed by raging fires; estimates of the final death toll range between 3,000 and 6,000.

On this date:

In 1775, Paul Revere began his famous ride from Charlestown to Lexington, Massachusetts, warning colonists that British Regular troops were approaching.

In 1865, Confederate Gen. Joseph E. Johnston surrendered to Union Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman near Durham Station in North Carolina, bringing further closure to the Civil War, which had formally ended.

In 1923, the first game was played at the original Yankee Stadium in New York; the Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox 4-1.

In 1954, Gamal Abdel Nasser seized power as he became prime minister of Egypt.

In 1955, physicist Albert Einstein died in Princeton, New Jersey, at age 76.

In 1966, Bill Russell was named player-coach of the Boston Celtics, becoming the NBA’s first Black coach.

In 1978, the Senate approved the Panama Canal Treaty, providing for the complete turnover of control of the waterway to Panama on the last day of 1999.

In 1983, 63 people, including 17 Americans, were killed at the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, by a suicide bomber.

In 2002, police arrested actor Robert Blake in the shooting death of his wife, Bonny Lee Bakley, nearly a year earlier. (Blake was acquitted at his criminal trial and found liable for her death in a civil trial.)

In 2012, Dick Clark, the ever-youthful television host and producer who helped bring rock ‘n’ roll into the mainstream on “American Bandstand” and rang in the New Year for the masses at Times Square, died at age 82.

In 2013, the FBI released surveillance camera images of two suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing and asked for the public’s help in identifying them.

In 2015, a ship believed to be carrying migrants from Africa sank in the Mediterranean off Libya; about 500 are believed to have died.

In 2016, “Hamilton,” Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hip-hop stage biography of America’s first treasury secretary, won the Pulitzer Prize for drama.

In 2018, Cuba’s government selected 57-year-old First Vice President Miguel Mario Diaz-Canel Bermudez as the sole candidate to succeed President Raul Castro, a move that installed someone from outside the Castro family in the country’s highest office for the first time in nearly six decades; the 86-year-old Castro would remained head of the Communist Party.

In 2019, the final report from special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation was made public; it outlined Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election but did not establish that members of the Trump campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government.

In 2022, Russia launched a long-feared, full-scale offensive to take control of Ukraine’s east, the country’s mostly Russian-speaking industrial heartland, where Moscow-backed separatists had been fighting Ukrainian forces for eight years.

In 2023, Fox and Dominion Voting Systems reached a $787 million settlement in the voting machine company’s defamation lawsuit, averting a trial in a case that exposed how the top-rated network chased viewers by promoting lies about the 2020 presidential election.

She's currently between VA Tech and Fordham. Decision day is in less than two weeks.

Today is Thursday, April 18, the 109th day of 2024.
There are 257 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History:

In 2019, the final report from special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation was made public; it outlined Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election but did not establish that members of the Trump campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government.
Tony needs to see if he can somehow get the Ruskies involved in his daughter's decision. :D

Sounds like fun. Hopefully the weather will be nice. How long is it for?
Just a couple of days, she'll be back Saturday night.
That's really nice though. I'm sure it'll be fun. Does she know what she's going to do in the fall?
I imagine so, she's pretty excited.

She's starting at community college for the first two years, because she doesn't want to build up two years worth of debt for basic classes. After that, she wants to go to Kent State for a degree in video game design.
That's awesome. My daughter got into something called the Stars program which is basically the same concept. She would be about to go to community college for two years and then any state school of her choosing, for free. She hasn't decided yet but it's not looking like she's considering college costs in her factoring.
Like Providence?
She's currently between VA Tech and Fordham. Decision day is in less than two weeks.
VT only about 3 1/2 hours from me.  Pretty school!

This is going to be a long day. Meetings, drive to Olympia to have lunch with my team, another meeting, meet a guy to buy a strobe tuner, then drive out to Belfair to co-host an open-mic from 5pm until 8. Figure I'll get home after 11.

But I got the latest incarnation of my pedalboard operational.

Well, without an amp it's mostly harmless.

With an amp, that big pedal on the top could cause all kinds of mind-blowing havoc. Seizures, hallucinations, facial tics, whatever.

The empty space upper right is for the tuner I'm picking up today.

For what it's worth, he and Andy were at a CI store last week and Andy texted Nate about that new CF that's not CF we talked about a week or two ago, asking if that's something we'd (including me, I can only assume) be interested in. So maybe they're thawing a bit.

The oldest is off to school early, to leave for her senior trip. Going to Niagara and Toronto.

Yeah, we visited a few weeks ago. Seven hours is a long drive. I was surprised how easily accessible the campus was given its history. All the kids on campus seemed happy and felt safe though.
And you didn't stop by?
I believe you were on your northeast tour at the time. Regardless, I wasn't about to drive an extra 3 1/2 hours each way during my 36-hour trek.
Gonna be up in NJ the week of July 22.  Maybe we can arrange a get together then.  Shame Fishy wouldn't attend too.
Why? Is Scott mad at you?
Not that I know of, but I haven't had any contact from him since he left the banter.
I texted him a few times and he responded. It's been a minute though.

For what it's worth, he and Andy were at a CI store last week and Andy texted Nate about that new CF that's not CF we talked about a week or two ago, asking if that's something we'd (including me, I can only assume) be interested in. So maybe they're thawing a bit.
Sheesh, I heard you the first time.

Seems Tennessee is providing competition to Florida Man....and Ohio is getting nasty (or are Dems just stupid?)

The Ohio thing shouldn't be an issue. As a matter of fact, in 2020, both parties had their conventions after the required date, but they passed legislation to allow them both to still be on the ballot. This time, it seems only the Dems are at risk, so naturally, the highly Republican state legislature is pushing back against any possible solution as hard as they can.

As for the other stuff, we'll, that's just the downfall of America right there. Unreal.

But to answer your question, yes, the Dems are stupid for having their convention late enough that it even becomes an issue. Even though, I believe, several other states have had the same issue and have already taken care of it. But in a state where JD Vance is somehow a senator, all bets are off.
