Millions Will Call in Sick After the Super Bowl!

In a perfect world, gorging yourself on chicken wings, beer and chips ‘n’ dip while shouting yourself hoarse would be a legitimate excuse to call in sick the following Monday. However, most employers frown upon “Super Sick Monday.” Still, that didn’t stop nearly 14 million employees from planning to call out sick for the day after last year’s Super Bowl, according to a survey by Mucinex. This year, that number is expected to jump to over 17 million, the largest expected level of workforce absences related to the Super Bowl.

Today is Friday, Feb. 1, the 32nd day of 2019. There are 333 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:
On Feb. 1, 1960, four black college students began a sit-in protest at a Woolworth's lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina, where they'd been refused service.

On this date:
In 1790, the U.S. Supreme Court convened for the first time in New York. (However, since only three of the six justices were present, the court recessed until the next day.)
In 1862, "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," a poem by Julia Ward Howe, was published in the Atlantic Monthly.
In 1942, during World War II, the Voice of America broadcast its first program to Europe, relaying it through the facilities of the British Broadcasting Corp. in London.
In 1943, during World War II, one of America's most highly decorated military units, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, made up almost exclusively of Japanese-Americans, was authorized.
In 1946, Norwegian statesman Trygve Lie was chosen to be the first secretary-general of the United Nations.
In 1959, men in Switzerland rejected giving women the right to vote by a more than 2-1 referendum margin. (Swiss women gained the right to vote in 1971.)
In 1968, during the Vietnam War, South Vietnam's police chief (Nguyen Ngoc Loan) executed a Viet Cong officer with a pistol shot to the head in a scene captured by news photographers. Richard M. Nixon announced his bid for the Republican presidential nomination.
In 1979, Iranian religious leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini received a tumultuous welcome in Tehran as he ended nearly 15 years of exile.
In 1982, "Late Night with David Letterman" premiered on NBC.
In 1993, Gary Bettman took office as the National Hockey League's first commissioner, succeeding the NHL's final president, Gil Stein.

In 1994, Jeff Gillooly, Tonya Harding's ex-husband, pleaded guilty in Portland, Ore., to racketeering for his part in the attack on figure skater Nancy Kerrigan in exchange for a 24-month sentence (he ended up serving six) and a $100,000 fine.
In 2003, the space shuttle Columbia broke up during re-entry, killing all seven of its crew members: commander Rick Husband; pilot William McCool; payload commander Michael Anderson; mission specialists Kalpana Chawla, David Brown and Laurel Clark; and payload specialist Ilan Ramon (ee-LAHN' rah-MOHN'), the first Israeli in space.

Ten years ago: The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Arizona Cardinals 27-23 to win Super Bowl XLIII (43). Rafael Nadal held off Roger Federer to win the Australian Open, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-2. Olympic great Michael Phelps acknowledged "bad judgment" after a photo in a British newspaper showed him inhaling from a marijuana pipe. Australian firefighter Dave Tree was photographed giving water to an injured koala found in burned brushland in Victoria state; the rescued female koala, dubbed "Sam," became an Internet sensation, but ended up being euthanized in Aug. 2009.

Five years ago: The United Nations' secretary-general, Ban Ki-moon, pressed the U.S. and Russia to help ensure that peace talks aimed at stemming Syria's civil war would resume soon after a week of peace talks ended in Geneva with no concrete progress. Ray Guy became the first punter elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame; joining the long-time Oakland Raider were two first-time eligible players, linebacker Derrick Brooks and offensive tackle Walter Jones, as well as defensive end Michael Strahan, receiver Andre Reed, defensive back Aeneas Williams and defensive end Claude Humphrey. Peyton Manning won his fifth Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player award in a landslide. Academy Award-winning actor Maximillian Schell, 83, died in Innsbruck, Austria.

One year ago: Republican State Rep. Don Shooter was expelled from the Arizona House because of a lengthy pattern of sexual misconduct, making him the first state lawmaker in the U.S. to be booted out since the #MeToo movement emerged. Sheriff's officials in Los Angeles said new witnesses had emerged in the 1981 drowning death of actress Natalie Wood, prompting investigators to name her former husband, Robert Wagner, a "person of interest" in what they considered a "suspicious death." (Detectives later said the evidence hadn't reached the threshold for a murder investigation and that they had no plans to file criminal charges.) A judge ordered a Wisconsin girl, Morgan Geyser, to be committed to a mental hospital for 40 years for stabbing a classmate when she was 12 years old to curry favor with the fictional horror character Slender Man.

When you left me all alone at the record hop
Told me you were going out for a soda pop
You were gone for quite a while, half an hour or more
You came back and man oh man this is what I saw
Lipstick on you collar told a tale on you
Lipstick on you collar said you were untrue
Bet your bottom dollar you and I are through
'Cause lipstick on you collar told a tale on you, yeah
You said it belonged to me, made me stop and think
Then I noticed yours was red, mine was baby pink
Who walked in but Mary Jane, lipstick all a mess

Six Gun Weekend to get wild near Williston

By Rick Allen / Correspondent

Six Gun Wild West Weekend is a mini replica of the Western-themed attraction that operated from 1963 to 1983.

Typically overlooked when folks reminisce about Six Gun Territory is the 20th Century corner for wee ones who’d had enough of dusty streets, gunslingers and can can dancers.

Fun Land in the County Fair was beyond a concrete wall bordering the Wild West town in the now-defunct theme park on Ocala’s east side. It was a double handful of carnival rides for young and old.

“This year we added Fort Kirby, a nice new playground for the kids,” said Daryl Kirby, owner of Kirby Family Farm near Williston and a coordinator of the annual Six Gun Wild West Weekends. The next Wild West weekend runs Saturday and Sunday at Kirby Family Farm.

Also taking a significant role this year is a new stage built onto the platform of the old park’s original train depot, which was moved to the farm in 2016.

Decades ago, park guests would ride an old train from the parking area to the terminal, which welcomed them to the frontier town. It was a short train ride that was always held up by desperados at the attraction off Silver Springs Boulevard — where Six Gun Plaza is today. Restoring the depot’s interior is a project for another day, Kirby said.

A family affair held in the spirit of the old attraction, the event features Wild West shootouts, can can dancing, train holdups and an overeager undertaker — much like the original park’s marquee activities.

Many one-time Six Gun actors will re-enact their roles from 40 years ago.

Six Gun Weekend to get wild near Williston

People adhered to the warnings. There was a 20 car pile up on Thruway because tractor trailers didn't follow ban. Elders having heart attacks from trying to shovel in the cold but luckily nothing major.

We had a huge fire nearby yesterday too. The Marcal paper factory burned to the ground. About 500 employees are indefinitely out of work. With the freezing temperatures it was a nightmare to put out. I happened to drive right past it last evening and it was eerie.

In 2003, the space shuttle Columbia broke up during re-entry, killing all seven of its crew members.

13 years ago and I can remember all this like it happened this morning.  On A Saturday morning when I lived in South Carolina, My dad was in the hospital in Shreveport readying for heart surgery and I was driving to Shreveport.  Stopped in at Dreamland Bar-B-Que in Tuscaloosa, AL for some their fabulous ribs for lunch.  Walked in and the TV was covering the Shuttle event........ so sat and watched that on an old black&white tv while eating my ribs and light bread which at that time was all they served and I guess probably still is all.

Edit:  menu shows all kinds of bbq now

My son did that at a bachelor party last year.  Yea, the bar and throwing makes as much sense as a bar at a gun range.
Amen!   I seriously doubt they can get the required insurance for a bar license.

Nope, I am cleaning a Glock now and if that is not therapeutic enough I will go shoot holes in people pictures on paper.

And I can always go fishing or just take a scenic boat ride

Most of my entire life I Always used Hopes No 9 gun cleaner which works great but smells really bad, a few years back Hopes came out with a new product called M-Pro 7 which works nice and does not smell bad.  M-Pro is much more warden friendly!

We had a huge fire nearby yesterday too. The Marcal paper factory burned to the ground. About 500 employees are indefinitely out of work. With the freezing temperatures it was a nightmare to put out. I happened to drive right past it last evening and it was eerie.

Late passing tugboat towing a baby this evening
I had to zoom in to see that. Nice.

We had a huge fire nearby yesterday too. The Marcal paper factory burned to the ground. About 500 employees are indefinitely out of work. With the freezing temperatures it was a nightmare to put out. I happened to drive right past it last evening and it was eerie.

I wasn't one upping. Nor is it "mine".

Edit: My point is that it was eerie driving past there. It's been a landmark my whole life.

Amazing series of before, during, and after photos.  What a shame.
