Today is Wednesday, Jan. 2, the second day of 2019. There are 363 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History:

On Jan. 2, 1900, U.S. Secretary of State John Hay announced the "Open Door Policy" to facilitate trade with China.

On this date:
In 1788, Georgia became the fourth state to ratify the U.S. Constitution.
In 1792, the first classes began at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
In 1929, the United States and Canada reached agreement on joint action to preserve Niagara Falls.
In 1935, Bruno Hauptmann went on trial in Flemington, New Jersey, on charges of kidnapping and murdering the 20-month-old son of Charles and Anne Lindbergh. (Hauptmann was found guilty, and executed.)
In 1942, the Philippine capital of Manila was captured by Japanese forces during World War II.
In 1960, Sen. John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts launched his successful bid for the presidency.
In 1967, Republican Ronald Reagan took the oath of office as the new governor of California in a ceremony that took place in Sacramento shortly just after midnight.
In 1974, President Richard Nixon signed legislation requiring states to limit highway speeds to 55 miles an hour as a way of conserving gasoline in the face of an OPEC oil embargo. (The 55 mph limit was effectively phased out in 1987; federal speed limits were abolished in 1995.) "Singing cowboy" star Tex Ritter died in Nashville at age 68.
In 1983, the original Broadway production of the musical "Annie" closed after a run of 2,377 performances.
In 1986, former baseball owner Bill Veeck, remembered for his well-publicized stunts and promotional gimmicks, including an exploding scoreboard and a midget pinch-hitter, died in Chicago at age 71.
In 2000, Retired Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt, Jr., known early in his career for modernizing the Navy and later for ordering the spraying of Agent Orange in Vietnam, died in Durham, N.C. at age 79.
In 2006, a methane gas explosion at the Sago Mine in West Virginia claimed the lives of 12 miners, but one miner, Randal McCloy, Jr., was eventually rescued. The roof of a skating rink collapsed in the German town of Bad Reichenhall, killing 15 people.

Ten years ago: President George W. Bush branded Hamas rocket attacks on Israel an "act of terror" and outlined his own condition for a cease-fire in Gaza. President-elect Barack Obama and his family arrived in Chicago after a holiday vacation in Hawaii. AirTran Airways apologized to nine Muslims kicked off a New Year's Day flight to Florida. Actor John Travolta's 16-year-old son, Jett, died at the family's vacation home in the Bahamas. Peyton Manning won a record-tying third Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player award. No. 7 Utah finished a perfect season with a 31-17 upset of No. 4 Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.

Five years ago: Fifty-two passengers trapped for more than a week on an icebound Russian research ship in the Antarctic were rescued when a Chinese helicopter swooped in and plucked them from the ice a dozen at a time. In the Sugar Bowl, No. 11 Oklahoma took down third-ranked Alabama 45-31.

One year ago: Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah said he would not seek re-election after serving more than 40 years in the Senate; the announcement cleared the way for 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney to successfully run for the seat. Sen. Al Franken formally resigned from the Senate a month after the Minnesota Democrat announced his plan to leave Congress amid a series of sexual misconduct allegations. NBC News announced that Hoda Kotb would be the co-anchor of the first two hours of the "Today" show, replacing Matt Lauer following his firing due to sexual misconduct allegations.

Twisted Tale Of The Day

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Investigators say a man who was dumpster diving outside a strip club was accidentally shot while playing with a gun.

North Charleston police say it all started when the victim, along with three other people, were searching through a dumpster at the Generation X Cabaret on 7219 Cross County Road.

According to a report, the victim and another male subject then started playing around with a gun.
The gun then discharged striking the victim in the abdomen, police said.

Police initially responded to the McDonald’s in the 2500 block of Ashley Phosphate Road for a man who was dropped off there with a gunshot wound around 8:30 a.m., according to police spokesman Spencer Pryor.

Officers found a man and woman walking next to a Fairfield Inn with the car that the victim was transported in.

Investigators say the people involved came up with a story of the victim being shot during a robbery and planned to drop him off at the McDonald’s.

Thursday Dec 30th lady's daughter had enough of her lying meth head dead beat. there were outstanding warrants from Citrus and Marion Counties, and one from Chicago. lady and I both called the Tip Line identifying the deadbeat and verified his location. after going through the bullshit they assured us they would send an officer within 20 minutes. after 2 hours the lady called again quite upset that nothing had ben done yet. another few hours went by and I called 911 reporting a domestic violence incident, explained the earlier issues, mentioned there were weapons in the house and said if something wasn't done soon that I was going over and put a slug in,his kneecaps and while he was done break his hands so he'd never hit another woman again. THAT got an immediate result. within 15 minutes the State Police and County Sheriff were at their door and removed him from the house with a bit of resistance. 30 minutes later they were at my door about my threat. I explained it was not a threat, that DV and child molesters are the worst people and if law enforcement won't do their job that I had no problem taking care of it myself. I have been in jail before and probably will be again before I die. it's no big deal. well, we had quite a talk before they left. they asked about my fire arms, took the serial numbers, checked my drivers license and left. they posted held without bail and he will be extridicted to Marion County Jail (a hell hole) this week.

So in other words, they came for you and settled for him.
Good thing the Pete Johnson incident was expunged from your record.  If they had seen that you would have been in the pokey for sure.
I told them about the Seneca County Jail incident when I laid out my wife's ex in the courthouse in 2007.

I will make sure that doesn't happen by making good on my threat. the daughter and I already discussed that, and I told her I want to meet any guy she wants to date.

Bean’s Longhorns showed up ready to play last night while the ill prepared GA Dawgs stunk up the dome!  Longhorns won 27-21 but the ass kick’n was worse than the score would indicate.
Watched the first half.  Georgia spotted the Horns 17 points with their punting team fubars.  But it is what it is.
I tell ya it was BEVO attacking UGA that set the mood.

So in other words, they came for you and settled for him.
Good thing the Pete Johnson incident was expunged from your record.  If they had seen that you would have been in the pokey for sure.
I told them about the Seneca County Jail incident when I laid out my wife's ex in the courthouse in 2007.
Sometimes there can be too much honesty...   :o   :-X
it wasn't on my police record so it must have been expunged. I'm as clean as Snow White.
Yea, but she was shacking up with 7 guys, so that's not a spotless track record.
I was thinking along the same lines. Ho!

The "Captain" of "The Captain and Tennille" Daryl Dragon, 76, died early Wednesday with his former wife and musical partner, Toni Tennille, by his side.

Dragon died at a hospice in Prescott, Arizona. Spokesman Harlan Boll said he died of renal failure.

The Captain and Tennille had a run of easy listening hits in the 1970s, notably the chart-topping "Love Will Keep Us Together." Their other songs included "Muskrat Love," ''Shop Around," and "Do That to Me One More Time."

So I had Popeyes Chicken today for 1st and  last time ,,  .    yuk!
Grupo de maestros Connecticut going here.
Popeye's looks way better on the commercials than it tastes.  ChickfliA, on the other hand, is decent, as fast food goes.

She's 75, holding up pretty well, has money, and lives in Florida. Hmmm....

Many people accompany cigars and drinks together. Well I will sometimes have a peice of chocolate or fruit that really wakes my palate up. You should try it if you never have.

You are on to something.  I discovered just that one Halloween.  Chocolate and cigars go very well.  Good chocolate especially. And of course coffee.  Can't say I've tried fruit and cigars.

Burgers are pretty tasty, particularly when you get them animal style.
