It's Tuesday again! In between insults we'll occasionally discuss cigars.  Join in and perhaps learn something along the way. Warning: don't proceed if you have thin skin but don't be afraid to post either... And welcome aboard!

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Hal Blaine, the Hall of Fame session drummer and virtual one-man soundtrack of the 1960s and '70s who played on the songs of Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and the Beach Boys and laid down one of music's most memorable opening riffs on the Ronettes' "Be My Baby," died Monday.

The winner of a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award last year, Blaine's name was known by few outside the music industry, even in his prime.

But just about anyone with a turntable, radio or TV heard his drumming on songs that included Presley's "Return to Sender," the Byrds' "Mr. Tambourine Man," Barbra Streisand's "The Way We Were," the Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations," dozens of hits produced by Phil Spector, and the theme songs to "Batman," ''The Partridge Family" and dozens of other shows."

Blaine died of natural causes at his home in Palm Desert, California, his son-in-law, Andy Johnson, told The Associated Press. He was 90.

Well enough to be at work, I guess. Though, if we weren't having a thing for one of our coaches who is leaving, I probably would've stayed home another day, just to rest. I was doing pretty good yesterday, then we went grocery shopping. That was the most movement I'd done in days, felt like I'd been hit by a truck afterwards. Lol

Seemed like it, yeah. Apparently, there's another round that's pretty popular right now. To listen to all the old, stubborn assholes that come in here every day hacking and wheezing like they're on their death beds, it's no wonder I got something. Nate actually ended getting it, too. So it's clearly going around.

Today is Tuesday, March 12, the 71st day of 2019. There are 294 days left in the year.

Today's Highlights in History:
On March 12, 1864, Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant assumed command as General-in-Chief of the Union armies in the Civil War.

On this date:
In 1912, the Girl Scouts of the USA had its beginnings as Juliette Gordon Low of Savannah, Georgia, founded the first American troop of the Girl Guides.
In 1914, American inventor George Westinghouse died in New York at age 67.
In 1923, inventor Lee De Forest publicly demonstrated his sound-on-movie-film system, called "Phonofilm," in New York.
In 1925, Chinese revolutionary leader Sun Yat-sen died in Beijing.
In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered the first of his 30 radio addresses that came to be known as "fireside chats," telling Americans what was being done to deal with the nation's economic crisis.
In 1938, the Anschluss merging Austria with Nazi Germany took place as German forces crossed the border between the two countries.
In 1947, President Harry S. Truman announced what became known as the "Truman Doctrine" to help Greece and Turkey resist Communism.
In 1955, legendary jazz musician Charlie "Bird" Parker died in New York at age 34.
In 1971, Hafez Assad was confirmed as president of Syria in a referendum.
In 1980, a Chicago jury found John Wayne Gacy Jr. guilty of the murders of 33 men and boys. (The next day, Gacy was sentenced to death; he was executed in May 1994.)
In 1993, Janet Reno was sworn in as the first female U.S. attorney general. A three-day blizzard that came to be known as "The Storm of the Century" began inundating the eastern third of the U.S. A series of bombings in Mumbai, India, killed 257 people (the explosions were allegedly masterminded by India's most wanted man, Dawood Ibrahim).
In 2003, Elizabeth Smart, the 15-year-old girl who vanished from her bedroom nine months earlier, was found alive in a Salt Lake City suburb with two drifters, Brian David Mitchell and Wanda Barzee. (Mitchell is serving a life sentence; Barzee was released from prison in September 2018.)

Ten years ago: Disgraced financier Bernard Madoff pleaded guilty in New York to pulling off perhaps the biggest swindle in Wall Street history. The Iraqi journalist who'd thrown his shoes at President George W. Bush received a three-year sentence. (Muntadhar al-Zeidi ended up serving nine months.) Lindsey Vonn became the first American woman to win the super-G season finale at the World Cup finals in Are, Sweden.

Five years ago: With Ukraine's interim prime minister, Arseniy Yatsenyuk (ahr-SEHN'-ee yaht-sehn-YOOK'), at his side, President Barack Obama said the United States would "completely reject" a referendum in Crimea opening the door for the Ukrainian peninsula to join Russia. In New York City, a gas explosion destroyed two five-story East Harlem apartment buildings, killing eight people and injuring more than 60.

One year ago: Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee said they'd completed a draft report concluding that there was no collusion or coordination between Donald Trump's presidential campaign and Russia. British Prime Minister Theresa May said Russia was "highly likely" to blame for poisoning a former spy and his daughter in an English city with a military-grade nerve agent. Two package bomb blasts a few miles apart killed a teenager and wounded two women in Austin less than two weeks after a similar attack left a man dead in another part of the Texas capital. (The attacks were part of a series of bombings that killed two people and wounded four others; the suspect, Mark Conditt, died after detonating a bomb in his SUV as officers moved in.) After a 46-year career at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, conductor James Levine was fired; an investigation had found evidence of sexual abuse and harassment. A dog died on a United Airlines plane after a flight attendant told the dog's owner to put the pet carrier in the overhead bin.

Man giving up food, drinking only beer during Lent.

NEWTOWN, Ohio (WCMH) – You may have heard the term 'liquid lunch,' meaning to drink booze instead of eating your lunch. An Ohio man is trying to do a month and a half of liquid lunches, dinners and breakfasts.

Del Hall says he is giving up food for lent, planning to live off beer for more than a month.

"I'm going to have all styles of beer," Hall told WKRC . "I am nervous, I'm very nervous about it. I've only fasted for 4 days."

His fast takes a nod from monks in the 1600s who would fast during the season by a bock beer diet.

"That would be their liquid bread and that's what they call it so the monks in Bavaria they would call doppelbock liquid bread and basically it would sustain them through 46 days of lent," said Hall.

Hall says he knows people think he's crazy. The Fifty West Brewing Company worker says he has a game plan and wants to see if he can prove to himself it's possible.

"I'm an army veteran, so you know - I was number one in my class in the army. I've run a full marathon before - 26.2 miles - I've done big challenges but this seems very daunting so I'm just curious if I'm up to the challenge, if I'm going to be able to do it or not," said Hall.

Hall says he will be monitoring his health and checking in with a physician as he pushes forward.

That was a long story for something that could've easily been summed up as, "Guy uses religion as an excuse to consume nothing but beer for 6 weeks straight."

A man and a woman were arrested after a botched shoe theft at Kohl’s in Lady Lake.

Kevin Bailey, 38, of Ocklawaha, entered the store at about 5 p.m. Friday and selected a box containing a pair of New Balance tennis shoes, according to an arrest report from the Lady Lake Police Department. He went into a dressing where he put the shoes on, removed the flip flops he was wearing and put them in the shoebox. He left the store without paying for the shoes. A loss prevention officer saw Bailey walk to a vehicle in the parking lot and then begin to run away. He ran to a nearby Five Guys burgers, where he attempted to hide in some bushes.

Bailey was arrested on charges of petit theft and resisting arrest.

Meanwhile, police officers checked the 2003 Saturn SUV that Bailey had approached. The unlocked vehicle was running with the keys in the ignition. A wallet belonging to 39-year-old Michelle Lynn Travis was found in the vehicle. Syringes and methamphetamine were also found in the vehicle.

Travis, who lives with Bailey, was detained by police when she was spotted walking out of Kohl’s. After questioning, she was arrested on charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug equipment.

She was booked at the Lake County Jail on $3,000 bond. Bailey was also being held on $3,000 bond.

How does that work as "property" when you build over water? I'm surprised they let anyone claim ownership to build like that

Each instance is different but usually involves a long term lease of rights from the state.  Depending on tidal flow it could also actually belong to an individual in some cases.

But in this case, originally the building belonged to the U.S. Navy and I am guessing they actually owned all the water rights for it.

He was 90.
The man is a legend.

All of this shit is a nationwide BFD!

AUSTIN (KXAN) — FBI investigators and federal prosecutors busted the largest college admissions scam ever prosecuted by the Department of Justice, officials with the U.S. Attorney's Office announced in a press conference Tuesday. Fifty people were charged in connection with the scam, including a University of Texas at Austin coach, who has been arrested.

The two ways officials say ringleader William Singer of California fraudulently got students into elite schools were either by bribing coaches to accept students through the athletic track or by bribing ACT and SAT administrators to allow someone else to take the test for students or change their answers later. Officials say Singer's non-profit Key Worldwide Foundation was a front for his scams. He's accused of accepting up to $25 million.

UT Tennis Coach Michael Center was arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud. He allegedly accepted a $100,000 bribe to get a student into UT through the tennis program. He had his initial appearance at the federal courthouse in Austin Tuesday afternoon, where bail was set at $50,000. He will have to pay $5,000 in cash within the next 72 hours to get out of jail. He will later have to go to court in Massachusetts, where the main investigation is happening. UT confirms he's been placed on leave.

Two Houston-area people are accused of accepting bribes — Lisa 'Niki' Williams, an ACT administrator, and Martin Fox, who was the president of a private tennis academy and camp. Both are charged with conspiracy to commit racketeering.

A fourth Texan, John Wilson, faces charges similar to Center, as do Hollywood actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin.

Students who were involved in the scheme attended or tried to attend UT, Georgetown, Stanford, UCLA, the University of San Diego, USC, Wake Forest and Yale.

Report I heard on the radio was the FBI was looking into something completely unrelated and got tipped off to this much bigger deal.  I guess there is so much focus on football and basketball it's easy for tennis to fly under the radar.
