Bagel lovers rejoice as it is National Bagel Day.

The unofficial holiday pays homage to the dense and chewy bread product that dates back to the 16th century.

In Tampa, the top five flavors of grocery store bagels include plain, everything, cinnamon raisin, blueberry & onion, Thomas' says.

The 10 most popular bagel toppings nationwide are cream cheese, butter, flavored cream cheese, cheese, jelly/jam, eggs, deli meat, margarine, peanut butter or other nut butter, and bacon.

  Bagels

Ring shaped bread with a hole in it  has been around in many cultures for hundreds of years but the current iteration of the bagel, a yeasted bread formed into a ring then boiled and baked, is thought to have originated in Poland.

Why is there a hole in the middle of bagels? Vendors threaded the hole-shaped bread onto dowels and hawked them on street corners.

In the early 1900s, bagel makers worked in teams of four. Two people would make the dough and shape the bagels, one boiled the bagels and the fourth baked them, Thomas' said.

Fun Bagel Facts  from holidayscalendar.com

Bagels are always round
Bagels are also known as beigels
Bagels are boiled before they are baked
The most popular bagel flavor is plain
The second most popular bagel flavor is sesame
The average person eats more than 11 bagels per year
The name bagel comes from the German word "bougel," a name which means bracelet

Hmm, I luv bagels with vegetable cream cheese.

Despite All the New Yorkers we have living here good bagels are next to impossible to find.  While bagels are about the only good thing they have Panera Bread does have good ones but unfortunately their only location here is about the hardest place around to get in and out of.  Additionally they are usually out of most bagel varieties.

Today is Saturday, Feb. 9, the 40th day of 2019. There are 325 days left in the year.
Today's Highlight in History:
On Feb. 9, 1964, The Beatles made their first live American television appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show," broadcast from New York on CBS.
On this date:
In 1825, the House of Representatives elected John Quincy Adams president after no candidate received a majority of electoral votes.
In 1861, Jefferson Davis was elected provisional president of the Confederate States of America at a congress held in Montgomery, Alabama.
In 1942, the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff held its first formal meeting to coordinate military strategy during World War II. Daylight-saving "War Time" went into effect in the United States, with clocks moved one hour forward. The SS Normandie, a former French liner being refitted for the U.S. Navy at a New York pier, caught fire (it capsized early the next morning).
In 1943, the World War II battle of Guadalcanal in the southwest Pacific ended with an Allied victory over Japanese forces.
In 1950, in a speech in Wheeling, West Virginia, Sen. Joseph McCarthy, R-Wis., charged that the State Department was riddled with Communists.
In 1960, Adolph Coors Co. chairman Adolph Coors III, 44, was shot to death in suburban Denver during a botched kidnapping attempt. (The man who killed him, Joseph Corbett Jr., served 19 years in prison.)
In 1964, the G.I. Joe action figure was introduced at the American International Toy Fair in New York.
In 1971, a magnitude 6.6 earthquake in California's San Fernando Valley claimed 65 lives. The crew of Apollo 14 returned to Earth after man's third landing on the moon.
In 1984, Soviet leader Yuri V. Andropov, 69, died 15 months after succeeding Leonid Brezhnev; he was followed by Konstantin U. Chernenko.
In 2002, Britain's Princess Margaret, sister of Queen Elizabeth II, died in London at age 71.
In 2005, Hewlett-Packard Co. chief executive Carly Fiorina was forced out by board members, ending her nearly six-year reign.
In 2017, a federal appeals court refused to reinstate President Donald Trump's ban on travelers from seven predominantly Muslim nations, unanimously rejecting the administration's claim of presidential authority, questioning its motives and concluding that the order was unlikely to survive legal challenges.

Ten years ago: President Barack Obama used his first news conference since taking office to urgently pressure lawmakers to approve a massive economic recovery bill. New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez admitted to taking performance-enhancing drugs, telling ESPN he'd used banned substances while with the Texas Rangers for three years. Lindsey Vonn won the downhill for her second gold at the World Championships in Val D'isere, France, becoming the second American woman (after Andrea Mead Lawrence) to win two golds at a worlds. Playwright Robert Anderson ("Tea and Sympathy") died in New York at age 91.

Five years ago: Despite a wave of online protests, Copenhagen Zoo in Denmark killed a healthy male giraffe named "Marius" because of rules imposed by a European zoo association to deter inbreeding. Host country Russia won its first gold medal of the Sochi Olympics, winning the team figure skating event; Matthias Mayer of Austria won the men's downhill. Missouri All-American Michael Sam came out to the nation as an openly gay player in published interviews with ESPN, The New York Times and Outsports. Danish movie director Gabriel Axel ("Babette's Feast") died in Copenhagen at age 95.

One year ago: President Donald Trump signed a $400 billion budget deal that sharply boosted spending, swelling the federal deficit; the measure ended a brief overnight federal government shutdown. At the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in South Korea, North and South Korean athletes entered Olympic Stadium together, waving flags showing a unified Korea; it was their first joint Olympic march in more than a decade.

SpecComm International, Inc., the parent company of a variety of tobacco-related publications and trade shows has been sold and some of its publications will be shutting down. Amongst the publications going away will be cigar and pipe focused magazines: Tobacconist; Cigars & Leisure; and Pipes & Tobacco.

IMHO Cigars and Leisure was a good publication.

Late last year, an Orwellian gun bill was presented in New York state. If signed into law, anyone who wants to buy a gun would have to turn over three years of their social media history and one year of their internet search history.

Before purchasing a gun, applicants would have to turn over their social media passwords to accounts like Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram. They would also have to allow police to see a year’s worth of their searches on Google, Yahoo, and Bing.

That law would also require anyone renewing their permit for a pistol to be subject to this invasion of privacy as well.

And NOW, ANOTHER STATE WANTS EVERY GUN OWNER TO HAND OVER THEIR SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS AND INTERNET SEARCH HISTORY

Meanwhile, in the Illinois House, state Rep. Daniel Didech, D-Buffalo Grove, has filed HB 888 which would require those who apply for a state-issued Firearm Owners Identification Card– mandatory for legal gun owners– turn over a list of their social media accounts to authorities under threat of a Class 2 felony. The State Police would use the information to determine if the accounts have any “information that would disqualify the person from obtaining or require revocation” of a FOID card.

Been performing some cigar maintenance, was able to do some consolidation and reduce down from 8 to 7 tubs.  I had smoked down my humi enough to replenish it with close to 100 smokes.

Sheesh, hope I don’t run out of smokes prematurely 🤔

Both those states are circling the drain.  Not a coincidence they pursue attacks on their citizenry in this way.
